Journal Entry:

Blake's funeral today. We drove to the Mesa Airport to pick up Jake. When he got in the car, his pants ripped. He is over weight and the pants were old but we didn't have much time. It was about 0830 and the funeral started at 1000. I suggested Walmart and he found a pair of suitable pants for a little over $16.00.

The funeral was very nice and now we are sitting around at Becky's house waiting to take Cathy Kreutzer and Jake back to their respective flights at their respective airports... Cathy to Phoenix Sky Harbor and Jake to Mesa.

Cathy and I are driving home starting tomorrow morning and we are planning on spending a night in Kanab again.

D&C 56:16 Wo unto you rich men, that will not give your substance to the poor, for your riches will canker your souls; and this shall be your lamentation in the day of visitation, and of judgment, and of indignation: The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and my soul is not saved!

"I suppose I’ve said enough to establish the fact that caring for the poor is a covenantal obligation. It follows, then, that we look after our poor and distressed not only because it is convenient, or exciting, or socially acceptable; we should do it first and foremost in fulfillment of our covenant with the Lord that we will do so."

President Marion G. Romney, Apostle, October 1972

Yesterday's Come Follow Me:

D&C 56:2 And he that will not take up his cross and follow me, and keep my commandments, the same shall not be saved.

"...[T]he "man [or woman] of Christ” is spiritual and bridles all passions, is temperate and restrained, and is benevolent and selfless. Men and women of Christ lay hold upon the word of God, deny themselves and take up His cross and press forward along a strait and narrow course of faithfulness, obedience, and devotion to the Savior and His gospel."

I was trying to utilize a credit from Trivago because of a cancellation from our East coast vacation but it has gotten so complicated that as of now I’m just paying for our hotel. We are going to stay with Becky in Phoenix and that will more than make up for whatever costs resulting from the Trivago confusion. It I have time out motivation later I will write more about that Trivago mess.

We will be driving on down to Phoenix today and, as I said, we will be staying with Becky.

D&C 54:10 And again, be patient in tribulation until I come; and, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, and they who have sought me early shall find rest to their souls. Even so. Amen.

“To the Latter-day Saints, the Lord gave patience as one of the divine attributes that qualifies a person for the ministry, he counseled them to be patient in their afflictions, and he admonished them to make their decisions in patience. The Savior taught us to be perfect and said, “Ye are not able to abide the presence of God now, neither the ministering of angels; wherefore, continue in patience until ye are perfected..."

I pray that we might be patient, especially in adversity, as we meet our challenges of uncertainty, trials, pressure, and tribulation in today’s world.”

We are driving down to Phoenix today but we are planning to stop overnight in Kanab. I think it's possible we might go all the way but we'll see. Becky has invited us to stay with her but we told her we would be there tomorrow so as I write this, I think Kanab might be a good idea. It's about halfway so at our age probably a good idea.

I've got some catching up to do with Journal entries and hope to do that as Cathy drives. If not,I'll catch up some other way.

D&C 54:6 But blessed are they who have kept the covenant and observed the commandment, for they shall obtain mercy.

"Some seem to value God’s love because of their hope that His love is so great and so unconditional that it will mercifully excuse them from obeying His laws. In contrast, those who understand God’s plan for His children know that God’s laws are invariable, which is another great evidence of His love for His children. Mercy cannot rob justice, and those who obtain mercy are “they who have kept the covenant and observed the commandment."

Blake passed away at about sunset yesterday. We will be going through the sadness and other issues for the next few days. Cathy and I are considering driving down to Arizona so we won't be boxed in by airline schedules and car rental issues. More later on that.

I feel badly for Kevin. He has been a great dad and had worked so very hard to try to save Blake but... I hope he will remember that Blake is still alive in the spirit world and will be his son forever.

In addition to all of that he has to constantly battle Kim who seems to get great satisfaction from trying to make his life as miserable as possible. On the other hand he now has Becky who seems to be everything to him that Kim was not. He's getting more used to being treated like the good husband and father that he is and he appreciates everything Becky has done and is doing for him. I don't think he was ever treated well by Kim. Enough about that. Hopefully the funeral details will be over soon and Kim will move up to Utah and peace will be a big part of his life.

One kind of deception seeks to mislead us about whom we should follow…

Satan also seeks to deceive us about right and wrong and persuade us that there is no such thing as sin. This detour typically starts off with what seems to be only a small departure: “Just try it once…”

Blake just seems to be on the verge of dying. His condition is described in daily reports from both Kevin and Kim as being mostly very serious. He has been on the verge of passing away for what sense like weeks. Finally yesterday Kevin announced that they would just basically watch and wait indicating that they were ready to let him go. So far, though, he is still with us.

There is a lot to this story but the bottom line is I think his days, if not hours, are few.

If he passes in the next day or two we will probably cancel our vacation and go instead to Arizona. We'll see.

I'm going to participate in my annual Firearms qualification today. Although I'm beginning to believe that at age 80 (in seven months or so) and never having fired a gun during a real tactical situation this will be my last qualification. I'll retain my practice of taking a gun with me when I feel the need but I'm going to rely on my history of 34 years as a policeman with LAPD to get me by if I ever get in a situation where I need to use it.

In fact, upon thinking about it, I may not even go to qualification today. We'll see.

Yesterday was quiet. Church and a walk. Choir is over for the summer.

“First, I mention the gift of discernment embodying the power to discriminate, which has been spoken of in our hearing before particularly as between right and wrong. I believe that this gift when highly developed arises largely out of an acute sensitivity to impressions—spiritual impressions, if you will—to read under the surface as it were, to detect hidden evil, and more importantly to find the good that may be concealed. The highest type of discernment is that which perceives in others and uncovers for them their better natures, the good inherent within them. It’s the gift every missionary needs when he takes the gospel to the people of the world. He must make an appraisal of every personality whom he meets. He must be able to discern the hidden spark that may be lighted for truth. The gift of discernment will save him from mistakes and embarrassment, and it will never fail to inspire confidence in the one who is rightly appraised.

The gift of discernment is essential to the leadership of the Church. I never ordain a bishop or set apart a president of a stake without invoking upon him this divine blessing, that he may read the lives and hearts of his people and call forth the best within them. The gift and power of discernment in this world of contention between the forces of good and the power of evil is essential equipment for every son and daughter of God. There could be no such mass dissensions as endanger the security of the world, if its populations possessed this great gift in larger degree. People are generally so gullible one is sometimes led to wonder whether the great Lincoln was right, after all, in the conclusion of his memorable statement, ‘You can’t fool all the people all the time.’ One does feel at times, however, a sense of pity and sympathy for some of the peoples of the world whose education, information, and exposure to higher ideals and exalted concepts have been so arbitrarily and ruthlessly restricted.

There is a class of people now grown sizable in the world who should possess this great gift in large degree. They know how the gift is attained. They have been educated in its spiritual foundations. They have been blessed with the counsels which foster it. They know how to order their lives to procure it. You know who they are, my brethren and sisters. Every member in the restored Church of Christ could have this gift if he willed to do so. He could not be deceived with the sophistries of the world. He could not be led astray by pseudo-prophets and subversive cults. Even the inexperienced would recognize false teachings, in a measure at least. With this gift they would be able to detect something of the disloyal, rebellious, and sinister influences which not infrequently prompt those who seemingly take pride in the destruction of youthful faith and loyalties. Discerning parents will do well to guard their children against such influences and such personalities and teachings before irreparable damage is done. The true gift of discernment is often premonitory. A sense of danger should be heeded to be of value. We give thanks for a set of providential circumstances which avert an accident. We ought to be grateful every day of our lives for this sense which keeps alive a conscience which constantly alerts us to the dangers inherent in wrongdoers and sin.”

We spent most of yesterday cleaning our house since we stopped using our housekeeper. We decided that paying her $180 every two weeks was just too much. She did a pretty good job but she basically was here all day and it was inconvenient for us to have her around. Plus, she actually didn't do some things that needed to be done. We're thinking someone who will come in and just dust, vacuum and mop the floors and clean the bathrooms should be able to finish the job in 2-3 hours and whatever else needs doing we'll handle ourselves. After vacation we'll look into that.

You may think you don’t have talents, but that is a false assumption, for we You may think you don’t have talents, but that is a false assumption, for we all have talents and gifts, every one of us. The bounds of creativity extend far beyond the limits of a canvas or a sheet of paper and do not require a brush, a pen, or the keys of a piano. Creation means bringing into existence something that did not exist before—colorful gardens, harmonious homes, family memories, flowing laughter.

What you create doesn’t have to be perfect. So what if the eggs are greasy or the toast is burned? Don’t let fear of failure discourage you. Don’t let the voice of critics paralyze you—whether that voice comes from the outside or the inside.

If you still feel incapable of creating, start small. Try to see how many smiles you can create, write a letter of appreciation, learn a new skill, identify a space and beautify it.

After falling fast asleep last night, our alarm system went off walking us both up. Apparently one of our motion detectors in our basement falsely detected motion and set off the alarm. I checked, of course, but it was a false alarm and basically ruined a good night's sleep.

All of our Entry points are monitored so whenever a motion detector activated without there being a break in I know it's a malfunction. This has happened two or three times now and it finally dawned on me that motion detectors are more of a pain than useful as long as we have functioning Entry point monitors and we do.

Come Follow Me

D&C 46:5 And again I say unto you, ye shall not cast any out of your sacrament meetings who are earnestly seeking the kingdom—I speak this concerning those who are not of the church.

Some say that attending church meetings is not helping them. Some say, “I didn’t learn anything today” or “No one was friendly to me” or “I was offended.” Personal disappointments should never keep us from the doctrine of Christ, who taught us to serve, not to be served. With this in mind, another member described the focus of his Church attendance:

“Years ago, I changed my attitude about going to church. No longer do I go to church for my sake, but to think of others. I make a point of saying hello to people who sit alone, to welcome visitors, … to volunteer for an assignment. …

“In short, I go to church each week with the intent of being active, not passive, and making a positive difference in people’s lives."

We're trying again to have a nice garden in front of our house. It's a work in progress. We planted some nice new flowers and added a new bright yellow garden hose. We were doing pretty good last year when we got hit with a bad hail storm like nothing I've ever seen in my lifetime.

Come Follow Me

D&C 46:2 But notwithstanding those things which are written, it always has been given to the elders of my church from the beginning, and ever shall be, to conduct all meetings as they are directed and guided by the Holy Spirit.

"These conferences are always under the direction of the Lord, guided by His Spirit. We are not assigned specific topics. Over weeks and months, often through sleepless nights, we wait upon the Lord. Through fasting, praying, studying, and pondering, we learn the message that He wants us to give.

Some might ask, “Why doesn’t the inspiration come more easily and quickly?” The Lord taught Oliver Cowdery, “You must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right.” Conference messages come to us after prayerful preparation, through the Holy Ghost."

Yesterday afternoon we went for a walk on the "old road" up by Bridal Veil Falls. It was a beautiful day and all of the parking lots were jammed with cars as we drove up the canyon. I decided to try the "view" lot which is directly across from the falls and which was, as usual, nearly deserted.

Most people visiting the falls take the trail on the south side of the river. The "old road" runs along the north side of the river between the river and highway 189 which is the main Provo Canyon highway. Because we enjoy exploring, we have found that there is a very nice paved trail that leads from the "view" lot down to the old road and even on a popular and crowded day very few people use it. It worked out great. We had a very nice walk with almost no other people around and no problem with parking. The photo is off the first sunflowers we have seen this year. They were beautiful and it turned out they are back in great numbers. Very nice.

Jake brought a nice bouquet of flowers over for Mothers Day and dropped them off while we were away.

Today at church the Elders Quorum is going to provide Primary support so the women who ordinarily have assignments in Primary can enjoy mothers day in relief society. Should be fun.

Come Follow Me

D&C 45:71 And it shall come to pass that the righteous shall be gathered out from among all nations, and shall come to Zion, singing with songs of everlasting joy.

"...[E]ach of us needs to model what it truly means to be a believing and behaving Latter-day Saint. Our example will have a powerful effect on others, making the restored gospel become much more relevant, meaningful, convincing, and desirable to them. Let us, each one, radiate to others the joy, confidence, love, and warmth of being part of the true Church of Christ. Our discipleship is not something to be endured with long face and heavy heart...As we come to understand the love of the Father and the Son for us, our spirits will soar, and we will “come to Zion, singing with songs of everlasting joy”.
...Remember, too often our behavior is a bigger deterrent to others than is our doctrine."

We went to a piano recital yesterday evening where Jill and Erica each played a couple of piano solos. We enjoyed another nice visit with Jake and Meredith and also, of course, enjoyed hearing Erica and Jill play the piano.

Yesterday morning we went to the Payson Temple for an Endowment session. The Payson temple is truly beautiful. All temples are beautiful but the Payson temple is among the best.

Come Follow Me

D&C 45:56 And at that day, when I shall come in my glory, shall the parable be fulfilled which I spake concerning the ten virgins.

57 For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day.

"The essential lesson of this parable of the ten virgins is that we are wise when we accept the gospel, seek to have the Holy Ghost with us, and avoid deception. The five wise virgins could not help those without oil; no one can accept the gospel, take the Holy Ghost as a guide, and avoid deception on our behalf. We have to do this for ourselves."

Elder Dale G. Renlund, Apostle
