2023 December 31, Sunday, Journal Entry

The Bishops Storehouse was pretty busy yesterday. But it was a nice, even business that just kept us all occupied for the whole three hours. A good day.

Last evening, Walt and Janet Morlok visited again. They are so much fun to have around. We had tacos from R and R then ate chips and other bad stuff while we played games and chatted. I really enjoyed it but my weight was 229 this morning - up three pounds from yesterday. Alas, it will go down again tomorrow because I'm going to behave myself today.

Come Follow Me

Finishing up the New Testament. Tomorrow we start with the Book of Mormon. I'm looking forward to that. Revelation has given us some good insights into the last days and what to expect if we're still around.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

"Some Christians, in large measure because of their genuine love for the Bible, have declared that there can be no more authorized scripture beyond the Bible. In thus pronouncing the canon of revelation closed, our friends in some other faiths shut the door on divine expression that we in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hold dear: the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the ongoing guidance received by God’s anointed prophets and apostles. Imputing no ill will to those who take such a position, nevertheless we respectfully but resolutely reject such an unscriptural characterization of true Christianity...

One of the great purposes of continuing revelation through living prophets is to declare to the world through additional witnesses that the Bible is true. “This is written,” an ancient prophet said, speaking of the Book of Mormon, “for the intent that ye may believe that,” speaking of the Bible. In one of the earliest revelations received by Joseph Smith, the Lord said, “Behold, I do not bring [the Book of Mormon forth] to destroy [the Bible] but to build it up.”

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “My Words … Never Cease”, April 2008

Isaiah 55:6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

2023 December 30, Saturday, Journal Entry

We attended the temple yesterday and found that the reservations we had in our calendar were not real. I'm not sure how that happened but I am sure the mistake was ours. The temple, of course, accommodated us but Cathy was only able to do two of her five Initiatories and I was able to do only three of my five. Then we attended the 1 p.m. Endowment session which, unfortunately, had plenty of empty seats.

Then we went to lunch at Cubby's and while we were there, Jake walked in. He had tracked us down by using Google maps location tracker and needed to relay a question to Cathy regarding an upcoming bridal shower for the soon to be Amy Black. She is marrying Meredith's brother, Ethan, in the Saratoga Springs temple in a couple of weeks and the women of the family are holding a bridal shower for her at Meredith's mother's home. Cathy was pleased to be asked to help. Ethan and Amy will make a great couple in my opinion. They are a little older than most young marrieds and just seem to be in a good place from what I can see.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

"My declaration is that this is precisely what the gospel of Jesus Christ offers us, especially in times of need. There is help. There is happiness. There really is light at the end of the tunnel. It is the Light of the World, the Bright and Morning Star, the “light that is endless, that can never be darkened.” It is the very Son of God Himself. In loving praise far beyond Romeo’s reach, we say, “What light through yonder window breaks?” It is the return of hope, and Jesus is the Sun. To any who may be struggling to see that light and find that hope, I say: Hold on. Keep trying. God loves you. Things will improve. Christ comes to you in His “more excellent ministry” with a future of “better promises.” He is your “high priest of good things to come.”

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland,  “An High Priest of Good Things to Come” October 1999

Revelation 21 describes a beautiful city that is like a temple where the righteous will dwell. It will be totally safe and will have only righteous people. I hope to be in a place like that. Read the chapter.

Tomorrow is the last day of 2023. On Monday we start 2024 and the Book of Mormon.

2023 December 29, Friday, Journal Entry

Today we will attend the temple at noon for Initiatories and 1 p.m. Endowment session.

I really enjoyed listening this morning to Elder Renlund's April 2021 talk about "Infuriating Unfairness". I highly recommend it.

Come Follow Me
Revelation 21: 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

"From modern revelation, unique to the restored gospel, we know that the commandment to seek perfection is part of God the Father’s plan for the salvation of His children. Under that plan we are all heirs of our heavenly parents. “We are the children of God,” the Apostle Paul taught, “and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ”. This means, as we are told in the New Testament, that we are “heirs … of eternal life” and that if we come to the Father, we are to “inherit all things”—all that He has—a concept our mortal minds can hardly grasp. But at least we can understand that achieving this ultimate destiny in eternity is possible only if we follow our Savior, Jesus Christ, who taught that “no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”. We seek to follow Him and become more like Him, here and hereafter."

Elder Dallin H. Oaks, April 2013

ScripturePlus Scripture of the Day:
Revelation 20:12
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

2023 December 28, Thursday, Journal Entry

I served in the temple yesterday and it was quite busy. My Wednesday morning shift might have been busier than usual because of the holidays. There were no organized missionary visits yet. They will start in February when the Provo Temple closes for rebuilding. I did five Initiatories after my shift.

We enjoyed the rest of the day together just running errands and doing little chores around the house.

Today I'm playing pickleball with my pals at the church.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

"In unfair situations, one of our tasks is to trust that “all that is unfair about life can be made right through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ overcame the world and “absorbed” all unfairness. Because of Him, we can have peace in this world and be of good cheer. If we let Him, Jesus Christ will consecrate the unfairness for our gain. He will not just console us and restore what was lost; He will use the unfairness for our benefit. When it comes to how and when, we need to recognize and a USPS.com® - USPS Tracking® Results ccept, as did Alma, that “it mattereth not; for God knoweth all these things; and it sufficeth me to know that this is the case.”

How we deal with advantages and disadvantages is part of life’s test. We will be judged not so much by what we say but by how we treat the vulnerable and disadvantaged. As Latter-day Saints, we seek to follow the Savior’s example, to go about doing good. We demonstrate our love for our neighbor by working to ensure the dignity of all Heavenly Father’s children.

To try to see things with an eternal perspective can be clarifying. As we become more like the Savior, we develop more empathy, understanding, and charity.

2023 December 27, Wednesday, Journal Entry

Yesterday was the wedding anniversary of my parents. I'm grateful that they were able to make a family with me being a part of it. I would like to get more involved in family history along with my efforts at temple work. Today after my term as an Ordinance Worker I have reserved time to do five Initiatory ordinances. I will already be dressed in temple clothes and it's just a few steps to the Initiatory ordinance area so why not?

Yesterday was a non-binding day. As we set out to go to breakfast I noticed a beautiful full moon setting in the west.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

"Brothers and sisters, just one year ago our dear prophet asked: “Are you willing to let God prevail in your life? … Are you willing to let whatever He needs you to do take precedence over every other ambition?” I humbly add to those prophetic inquiries: “Will you let God be the author and finisher of your story?”

In Revelation we learn that we will stand before God and be judged out of the books of life, according to our works.

We will be judged by our book of life. We can choose to write a comfortable narrative for ourselves. Or we can allow the Master Author and Finisher to write our story with us, letting the role He needs us to play take precedence over other ambitions.

Let Christ be the author and finisher of your story!"

The Bishops Storehouse will be closed today because of yesterday being Christmas. Tomorrow I'll be serving in the temple as usual but today will be a day of rest and relaxation.

We enjoyed having Jake and his family over yesterday. Meredith and Alexander didn't make it because Alex was sick. We exchanged gifts and played a game of five Crowns.

Our home is beautifully decorated thanks mostly to Cathy's efforts. She is such a great wife, mother and grandmother. A true blessing in my life.

Come Follow Me

What is a testimony?

A testimony is the spirit of prophecy. It is a personal revelation from God, revealing the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. A testimony comes through the Holy Ghost; it makes a deep and lasting impression on the soul.

Individual testimonies are the foundation and strength of the Church. Our testimony provides a guiding light that leads to a commitment which directs our conduct and our way of life. Our testimony is true north on a spiritual compass. It is a moving force that cannot be seen but can truly be felt. It is a burning within that tells us what is right. It is when “your heart tells you things your mind doesn’t know.”

Elder Robert D. Hales Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostle, October 1994

How Do We Get a Testimony?

We all know that it is easier to talk about a testimony than to acquire one. The process to receive one is based on the law of the harvest: “For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). No good thing comes without effort and sacrifice. If we have to work hard to obtain a testimony, it will make us and our testimony even stronger. And if we share our testimony, it will grow.

A testimony is a most precious possession because it is not acquired by logic or reason alone, it cannot be purchased with earthly possessions, and it cannot be given as a present or inherited from our ancestors. We cannot depend on the testimonies of other people. We need to know for ourselves. President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “Every Latter-day Saint has the responsibility to know for himself or herself with a certainty beyond doubt that Jesus is the resurrected, living Son of the living God” (“Fear Not to Do Good,” Ensign, May 1983, 80).

The source of this sure knowledge and firm conviction is divine revelation, “for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10).

We receive this testimony when the Holy Spirit speaks to the spirit within us. We will receive a calm and unwavering certainty that will be the source of our testimony and conviction irrespective of our culture, race, language, or socioeconomic background. These promptings of the Spirit, rather than human logic alone, will be the true foundation upon which our testimony will be built.

2023 December 25, Christmas Day

Our Sacrament meeting narration efforts seemed to be successful yesterday. Then we came home and while Cathy rested, I did my stretch and stair climbing exercise routine then followed that up with a walk in the park. Good exercise and I got my 7500+ steps in. Felt good. Today is Christmas and we're having Jake and his family over for gifts and dinner. Should be a fun day.

Come Follow Me
Revelation 15:3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.
4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

Revelation has some amazing descriptions of our day and days to come. We are blessed to have prophets and Apostles as well as other sources such as Scripture Gems to help us study these great prophecies and resources.

We didn't wrap gifts until later in the day. Here is our tree with some gifts wrapped underneath. Once with colored lights (above). And once with white lights (right).

2023 December 24, Sunday

The Bishops Storehouse was definitely busy and what a blessing to be involved with that great place. People were lined up most of the morning. I tried to help as many as I could. There were people in need but I have come to really appreciate the number of truly angelic people who are there to just help others. One woman was there with another who recently arrived in America from Russia. This woman's husband had served a mission in Russia and baptized a man. This man and his family immigrated to America and was now temporarily living with the family of the man who baptized him. The two wives, one immigrant and one American, were there at the Bishops Storehouse trying to help get the immigrant family started in their lives in America.

That is just one of the many experiences I've had there seeing firsthand the love and service that abounds in the Bishops Storehouse. To be a small part of that is a great blessing.

Cathy and I spent the rest of the day preparing our narration for today's Sacrament meeting.

Come Follow Me

We bear testimony, as His duly ordained Apostles—that Jesus is the Living Christ, the immortal Son of God. He is the great King Immanuel, who stands today on the right hand of His Father. He is the light, the life, and the hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come.

2023 December 23, Saturday, Journal Entry

We spent yesterday getting ready to have Beth and Karen over for dinner and fun. Cathy a really good soup that was supposed to be lentil soup but became split pea because she inadvertently used split peas instead of lentils. It turned out well though and we had a very enjoyable evening. It gives us a rain to decorate when we can have loved ones visit us and enjoy our home and hospitality.

Today we serve in the Bishops Storehouse. We are anticipating a busy day but you never know. We are still trying to finalize what we will say while narrating tomorrow's Sacrament meeting.

Come Follow Me

We Are That We Might Have Joy

In the scriptures, the word joy typically means much more than passing moments of contentment or even feelings of happiness. Joy in this context is a godly attribute, found in its fulness when we return to dwell in the presence of God. It is more profound, elevating, enduring, and life-changing than any pleasure or comfort this world can offer.

We were created to have joy. It is our intended destiny as children of a loving Heavenly Father. He wants to share His joy with us. The prophet Lehi taught that God’s plan for each of us is that we “might have joy.” Because we live in a fallen world, enduring joy or everlasting joy often seems beyond our reach. Yet in the very next verse, Lehi continues by explaining that “the Messiah [came to] … redeem [us] from the fall.” Redemption, by and through the Savior Jesus Christ, makes joy possible.

The gospel message is a message of hope, of “good tidings of great joy,” and the means whereby all can experience peace and occasions of joy in this life and receive a fulness of joy in the life to come.

I played pickleball with three of my friends at the church yesterday morning for two hours. It's a lot of fun and pretty good exercise for a 77 year old guy. We are all retired and enjoy each other's company. Cathy enjoyed taking one of her ministering sisters out to her birthday lunch at a place called "Taste" in Provo.

I think we're going to try again to have Beth and Karen over for dinner this evening. Cathy seems to be feeling better and of course that's a good thing.

Come Follow Me

Luke 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

"When the angel announced the birth of the Savior to the shepherds, these men “came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.”…

The good news of the gospel throughout the ages has been accompanied with a rapid pace and a sense of urgency. The Prophet Joseph Smith exhibited this haste as well as have all modern-day prophets.

Where do the streams of our thoughts flow? Are we reading the scriptures? Are we listening to the counsel of our present-day prophet? Are we catching the vision of really living the gospel? Are we feeling the sense of urgency—an urgency to repent, to share the gospel, to prepare for the second coming of the Savior, to obey all God’s commandments?"

Elder J. Thomas Fyans, Assistant to the Council of the Twelve, April 1975

Good questions.

2023 December 21, Thursday, Journal Entry

Our temple was busier than usual yesterday morning because the Provo Temple is closed - I think temporarily for now. We had about 50 male Missionaries added to our 9 a.m. Session and close to that to our 10 a.m. Session. We have plenty of room because our temple has about 98 seats in each of four endowment rooms. Anyway the only impact was in the new name issue area for a few minutes before each of those sessions. Probably TMI. Bottom line is it's nice to be busy in the temple because we are literally helping to gather Israel in on the other side of the Veil. It's interesting to deal with these young Missionaries because they have varying levels of experience and knowledge about temple work.

Cathy was feeling poorly so we put off having Beth and Karen come over for dinner for a few days. Cathy put together some nice packages of her home baked cookies and I delivered them to some of our neighborhood friends.

Today I get to play pickleball with some of my pals at the church. Other than that, not much planned.

Come Follow Me

Luke 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

"We were created to have joy. It is our intended destiny as children of a loving Heavenly Father. He wants to share His joy with us. The prophet Lehi taught that God’s plan for each of us is that we “might have joy.”…Redemption, by and through the Savior Jesus Christ, makes joy possible.

The gospel message is a message of hope, of “good tidings of great joy,” and the means whereby all can experience peace and occasions of joy in this life and receive a fulness of joy in the life to come.

The joy we speak of is a gift for the faithful, yet it comes with a price. Joy is not cheap or casually given. Rather, it is bought “with the precious blood of [Jesus] Christ.” If we really understood the value of true, godly joy, we would not hesitate to sacrifice any worldly possession or make any necessary life changes to receive it."

The Bishops Storehouse was only moderately busy yesterday. But everyone I served was very grateful and pleasant. It was a very good day there. Looking forward to serving in the temple this morning and then to later have Beth and Karen come over for dinner.

Come Follow Me

Luke 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

"Before we can successfully undertake a personal search for Jesus, we must first prepare time for him in our lives and room for him in our hearts. In these busy days there are many who have time for golf, time for shopping, time for work, time for play, but no time for Christ.

Lovely homes dot the land and provide rooms for eating, rooms for sleeping, playrooms, sewing rooms, television rooms, but no room for Christ.

Do we get a pang of conscience as we recall his own words, ". . . foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head." Or do we flush with embarrassment when we remember, "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." No room. No room. No room. Ever has it been."

2023 December 19, Tuesday, Journal Entry

We had our empty nesters Christmas party last night at the church and it was actually pretty nice. Diane Harvey is the driving force behind the group and she did a great job. Her husband, Bill, was also a big help.

I recently noticed an app on my iPhone called "Journal" that actually keeps track of where I have been recently and gives me an opportunity to create a journal Entry if I so desire. It doesn't look like it can work with my iPad which would make it a lot more useful because I like to Journal using my iPad. But it's so interesting that I'm intrigued. I'll ask Siri if she knows. Siri didn't know and there is no apparent way to use that iPhone Journal app on my iPad, at least for now. I'll keep exploring the possibilities though.

We actually went to breakfast at the Mirror Lake Diner yesterday and I had forgot that until the Journal app on my iPhone reminded me.

So at least for now, the Journal app on my iPhone will be valuable in reminding me where I have been and what I've been doing.

Come Follow Me

3 Nephi 1:13 Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfil all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets.

"The scriptural story of Jesus Christ is indeed a two-hemisphere story.  While Mary and Joseph in the East were making preparations for the holy child’s birth in Bethlehem,  Nephi in the West was being taught by the premortal Messiah. To Nephi the Lord said, “Be of good cheer; … on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfil all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets.”

2023 December 18, Monday, Journal Entry

We've got our neighborhood home evening Christmas party this evening. Other than that, not much on our plate for today. I went to church yesterday but Cathy wasn't feeling well and stayed he home.

Come Follow Me

Christmas week!

Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

" Of the many magnificent purposes served in the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, one great aspect of that mission often goes uncelebrated. His followers did not understand it fully at the time, and many in modern Christianity do not grasp it now, but the Savior Himself spoke of it repeatedly and emphatically. It is the grand truth that in all that Jesus came to say and do, including and especially in His atoning suffering and sacrifice, He was showing us who and what God our Eternal Father is like, how completely devoted He is to His children in every age and nation. In word and in deed Jesus was trying to reveal and make personal to us the true nature of His Father, our Father in Heaven."

The Bishops Storehouse was pretty busy but I had a very good day. Everyone I helped was very nice and appreciative.

I record my weight, blood pressure and current Glucose reading on my calendar each morning at about 3:30. I'm now adding the number of steps I walked the previous day according to my Obama app.

Today will be church and choir practice.

Revelation 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

"…just as the Lord has said, while there will be mourning at the temporary separation, there is no sorrow for those who die in the Lord…This is the solace and comfort that comes to us when we understand the gospel plan and know that families are forever."

2023 December 16, Saturday, Journal Entry

Yesterday was very quiet for us. We went back to Fashion Place Mall to get Cathy's keys and walked around a bit. Got my steps in.

Today we will work in the Bishops Storehouse and being Saturday a week before Christmas, it should be pretty busy.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 2:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

"Lucifer is this accuser…He seeks to drag us down…He is the one who tells us we are not adequate, the one who tells us we are not good enough, the one who tells us there is no recovery from a mistake…Christ is the helper and consoler. His ways bring joy and hope–eventually and always."

2023 December 15, Friday, Journal Entry

We went to the temple together yesterday. We each did five Initiatories and then attended an Endowment session. A good day.

We went to Fashion Place Mall prior to going to the temple and Cathy got a new purse. After we got in the car to go to lunch she found that the new purse was too small so after lunch we took it back. Then after we got home, she realized that she had left her keys in the returned purse. Fortunately they found them for us so we get to go back to Fashion Place today and retrieve the keys. Maybe we'll get some steps in while we are there. Hope so.

Otherwise I plan on finalizing today the things I'm going to say while narrating next Sunday's Sacrament meeting - actually a week from Sunday (12/24).

Come Follow Me

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

"Cast down as unembodied spirits in mortality, Satan and his followers tempt and seek to deceive and captivate the children of God. So it is that the evil one, who opposed and sought to destroy the Father’s plan, actually facilitated it, because it is opposition that enables choice and it is the opportunity of making the right choices that leads to the growth that is the purpose of the Father’s plan."

Elder Dallin H. Oaks, "Opposition in All Things"

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

Ephesians 6: 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Yesterday I served in the temple from 0445-1000 as usual for Wednesday mornings. I really enjoy my new assignment as dressing room coordinator because I get to visit with so many other good men as they come and go. Plus just serving in the temple is a great blessing in general..

Yesterday afternoon we went to Beth's for dinner which I gather, Karen was the primary prepared of. It was very good and Dianna was also there which was a nice bonus. We enjoyed a couple of games during which we were able to visit and just enjoy each other's company.

Afterward on the way home we drove by Riverwood shopping area which was beautifully lighted for Christmas.

The secret is out... We went to Cubby's for lunch yesterday and I had what has become my favorite hamburger, the "Dragon Slayer". For a hamburger it is one of the best meals I've seen.

We served in the Bishops Storehouse. Not as busy as I thought it might be but busy.

Cathy had some tests done of her kidneys and other things. All were normal. She was relieved as was I.

Today is my temple day. I start at 04 45 so I have to get going. We are going over to Beth's this afternoon for food and fun.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 7:16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.  17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

"So yes, let us do all we can to relieve suffering and sorrow now, and let us devote ourselves more diligently to the preparations needed for the day when pain and evil are ended altogether…It will be a day of redemption and judgment…

What can we do to prepare now for that day? We can prepare ourselves as a people; we can gather the Lord’s covenant people; and we can help redeem the promise of salvation “made to the fathers,” our ancestors. All of this must occur in some substantial measure before the Lord comes again."

2023 December 12, Tuesday, Journal Entry

I updated all of my electronic devices, iPad, iPhone and Apple watch, to their latest operating systems. The technology available today is truly amazing and, when properly used, it's a great blessing. There's no way I would be writing daily journal entries without this iPad. Plus the Come Follow Me lessons that are available couldn't possibly be reviewed by me any other way. I just hope that through the coming years and events that this technology will last and I have to believe that it will. I have an unbreakable testimony that my Father in Heaven and His beloved son stand for what is good and true. If I strive to follow their teachings I will always be in a good place.

Cathy continues to struggle with her health. But through it all she does good things for others... Especially for me. She is such a blessing in my life and the lives of our sons and their families. We have a couple of medical appointments for her today and then we will serve in the Bishops Storehouse this afternoon. That is something we both enjoy doing together.

Come Follow Me

“In His atoning sacrifice, Jesus Christ took upon Himself our pains, afflictions, and infirmities. Because of this, He knows ‘according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities’ (Alma 7:12; see also verse 11). He invites, ‘Come unto me,’ and as we do, He gives us rest, hope, strength, perspective, and healing (Matthew 11:28; see also verses 29–30).

“As we rely on Jesus Christ and His Atonement, He can help us endure our trials, sicknesses, and pain. We can be filled with joy, peace, and consolation. All that is unfair about life can be made right through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.”

We can joyfully be peaceable followers of Christ.

2023 December 11, Monday

we enjoyed having Jake and Meredith and their kids over for Sunday afternoon dinner and games and visiting yesterday. They are really good people and working hard to make their family successful in all meaningful ways. Meredith for a, in my opinion, well deserved promotion at Goldman Sachs where she has been employed for years. I say well deserved because she has a very rare combination of high intelligence, talent, education and above average friendly personality plus she is very nice looking as well. Jake sort of struggles with being a "stay at home" dad but since the beginning of their marriage I think they both agreed that her income and tenure at Goldman Sachs vs him being freshly graduated from UVU made it financially more lucrative for her to continue working and him to stay with the kids. I know he'd like to be making the money but he realized it's best to have her income for now and the kids need him to be there for them. They're doing great though.

It's fun and a nice break for them to come over here for a nice Sunday afternoon. We have the luxury of having a nice home that we can keep neat and clean with no young-uns to deal with 24-7.  So having them over gives them a nice break. They don't have to fix dinner or clean up afterward and we love doing that for them.

Today is just a relaxing day to catch up with whatever. We have a HOA meeting this evening that we will probably attend. HOAs are always problematic and ours certainly has its share of problems. Hopefully as time goes by some of the worst will be appropriately dealt with.

Come Follow Me

Revelations 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

"The Lord instructs His servants to be humble because the process of being made whole spiritually begins with a broken heart. Think of the good that comes from broken things: Soil is broken to plant wheat. Wheat is broken to make bread. Bread is broken to become the emblems of the sacrament. When one who is repentant partakes of the sacrament with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, he or she becomes whole. As we repent and become whole through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we have much more to offer the Savior as we serve Him. “Yea, come unto him, and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him.”

As you live a virtuous life, you will feel a peaceful confidence in your standing before God and you will have the power of the Spirit to be with you."

Elder Randy D. Funk of The Seventy, October 2013

Doctrine and Covenants 43:24 O, ye nations of the earth, how often would I have gathered you together as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, but ye would not! 25 How oft have I called upon you by the mouth of my servants, and by the ministering of angels, and by mine own voice, and by the voice of thunderings, and by the voice of lightnings, and by the voice of tempests, and by the voice of earthquakes, and great hailstorms, and by the voice of famines and pestilences of every kind, and by the great sound of a trump, and by the voice of judgment, and by the voice of mercy all the day long, and by the voice of glory and honor and the riches of eternal life, and would have saved you with an everlasting salvation, but ye would not!

26 Behold, the day has come, when the cup of the wrath of mine indignation is full.

2023 December 10, Sunday, Journal Entry

As anticipated the Bishops Storehouse was pretty busy yesterday. Most people who come there are just trying to get some food to last for a week or two. But one man I helped probably got at least $1,000 worth of things for a household of six. He had his Bishop's approval, of course, but three full carts of food including 50 lbs of potatoes, two turkeys, 10 beef roasts, and 10 pork roasts among many other items makes one wonder. The church can afford it of course but mainly I hope this food doesn't go to waste or get resold or something. You just have to trust that things are OK.

We finished getting ready to have Jake's family over for dinner today. That should be very enjoyable.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

"As the long-prophesied latter-day gathering of the Lord’s covenant people gains momentum, the Church will truly be composed of members from every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. This is not a calculated or forced diversity but a naturally occurring phenomenon that we would expect, recognizing that the gospel net gathers from every nation and every people.

How blessed we are to see the day that Zion is being established simultaneously on every continent and in our own neighborhoods...

Having been given this privilege, we cannot permit any racism, tribal prejudice, or other divisions to exist in the latter-day Church of Christ. The Lord commands us, “Be one; and if ye are not one ye are not mine.” We should be diligent in rooting prejudice and discrimination out of the Church, out of our homes, and, most of all, out of our hearts. As our Church population grows ever more diverse, our welcome must grow ever more spontaneous and warm. We need one another."

2023 December 9, Saturday, Journal Entry

We will serve at the Bishops Storehouse this morning. It is going to be a very cold day so I'm not sure how busy we will be but a growing number of people who are having difficulty affording food are coming to the Storehouse with their Bishop's approval to get food and other necessities. We shall see.

Yesterday was also quiet and we spent time doing a little Christmas shopping.

Cathy and I went to a nice luncheon given as appreciation for church service Missionaries which we are. It was very nice and it was nice to be able to visit with other Missionaries. Really good people.

Cathy's health continues to be problematic. She had lab work done that showed significant problems with her kidneys. She exercises much more than average and she's not over weight and she eats mostly very healthy food. We have a very good and caring personal physician who we both go to. She also recently accidentally stuffed a toe and it might be broken. A lot of discoloration and moderate swelling.

Come Follow Me
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

"[W]e need to know that our hearts are honest and broken. How do we know that? We begin by engaging in sincere self-reflection. The heart is the center of our feelings. As we look into our hearts, we screen ourselves. What no one around us knows, we surely know. We know our motives and desires. When we engage in sincere, honest reflection, we do not rationalize or deceive ourselves.
There is also a way to judge if our hearts are broken. A broken heart is a soft, an open, and a receptive heart. When I hear the Savior say, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock,” I hear Him knocking at the door of my heart. If I open this door to Him, I am more responsive to the invitations of the Spirit, and I am more accepting of God’s will.
As we sincerely and prayerfully ponder the extent to which our hearts are honest and broken, we will be taught by the Holy Ghost. We will receive a sweet confirmation or gentle correction, inviting us to act."

I actually played pickleball at our Ward building yesterday morning with three of my pickleball bud. It's not as bad as you might think and there is actually room for three courts in the cultural hall. There were four women there already playing so we set up a second court and had a pretty good time.

I spent the rest of the day helping Cathy finish up decorating the house for Christmas. It looks great and it gives her something to do. She just tinkered with stuff and did it in a relaxing way.

We are going to a Christmas luncheon today for Service Missionaries from the Bishops Storehouse. Everyone who works there is so nice and friendly. It's almost a snapshot preview of what life might be like after this mortal existence... Just good loving people who want to help others.

It snowed a little last night and I had to put the trash today so I thought I'd try out our "new" snow removal device. In the absence of a real snow shovel, it's better than nothing. I'm not sure how it will do in a real snowfall of several inches. Maybe we'll find out.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 3 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

"I would like to speak of one particular attitude and practice we need to adopt if we are to meet our Heavenly Father’s high expectations. It is this: willingly to accept and even seek correction. Correction is vital if we would conform our lives “unto a perfect man, [that is,] unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ”. Paul said of divine correction or chastening, “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth”. Though it is often difficult to endure, truly we ought to rejoice that God considers us worth the time and trouble to correct.

Divine chastening has at least three purposes: (1) to persuade us to repent, (2) to refine and sanctify us, and (3) at times to redirect our course in life to what God knows is a better path."

New Name

When we are endowed in a temple, we are given a new name. I have often wondered about why that was done and what it meant. It is obviously significant and important because the church has a record of each member who has has received a new name and what that new name is. When that new name is received, the person receiving it is told that it should "always" be remembered and must be kept sacred and never revealed except at a future time and place that will be shown them.

Interestingly the New Name is not a topic in the Topical Guide or the Bible Dictionary or the Guide to the Scriptures in the Gospel Library app.

The below information is contained in the ScripturePlus Come Follow Me App commentary on December 6, 2023

The idea of a new name is significant. Names in ancient societies identified not only the person but also his or her status, and to be given a new name by another was to enter into a personal, even intimate, relationship that brought a higher status. Patronymics indicated that a person was free and even of nobility. As such, he or she was in a position to inherit the family fortune.

In the gospel sense, having the right name indicated one was an heir to eternal life. That the believers will be given a white stone in which the new name is written does not mean the individual did not know the name before, only that it was now made permanent. The Christian already had one new name, that of Christ Himself. Therefore, it was all-important that the faithful stay true to the name, for the reward could be lost. Taking the name of Christ did more; it brought them under God’s protective power, one that did not guarantee protection from physical death, but from spiritual death. That, coupled with the reception of the new name, signified that one was a member of the eternal community of the redeemed.

In the Old Testament, Jehovah often bestowed a new name to show that a new and adoptive relationship had been established with Him. The giving of the name stressed the idea that the Lord had redeemed the newly renamed one and brought him or her into His circle. Further, following Hebrew belief that names represent the essence of a person, receiving the new name showed that not only had one’s status changed but also his or her essence had changed. They not only had a new name but were a new person in Christ.

The situation of these celestial souls stands in contrast to others who also received a new name. That name, however, belonged to the satanic beast. It did not bring protection, for “the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name” (Revelation 14:11).

I think we finally have our front door looking as good as we can for Christmas.

The lights on the wreath are battery powered and modern technology has been implemented. When you turn the lights on they stay on for six hours then automatically turn off and then come back on 18 hours later. So the only trick is to turn them on at about dusk, or 5 p.m., then they turn off at 11 p.m. and the cycle continues. Pretty cool.
The lights around the door are plugged into the front door light socket and it is already preset to stay on all night then automatically turn off during the day so nothing left to do. Don't even have to turn them on or off.

Yesterday I served my regular shift at the temple from 0445 to 1000. Very enjoyable. I coordinate the male ordinance workers who are assigned to the men's dressing room including the new name booths. Just make sure everything runs smoothly.

Come Follow Me
Revelation 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

"Satan seeks to lead us to the breeding ground of doubt. He seeks to harden our hearts so that we will not believe. The breeding ground of doubt can appear inviting because its seemingly peaceful, warm waters do not require us to “live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God.” In such waters Satan tempts us to relax our spiritual vigilance. That inattention can induce a lack of spiritual conviction, where we are “neither cold nor hot.” If we are not anchored on Christ, doubt and its allures will lead us away to apathy, where we shall find neither miracles, lasting happiness, nor “rest unto [our] souls.”
Just as hurricanes weaken over land, doubt is replaced with faith as we build our foundation on Christ."

Had a pretty good day serving in the Bishops Storehouse. That is such a blessing to me to interact with my brothers and sisters who are in need and are being helped by our service. I always try to make them feel good about receiving the goods that we offer. Yesterday was my first full day of being as manager and I think I did fairly well. There is plenty of room for improvement but I'm working with good people.

Cathy had two doctor appointments yesterday. Mostly routine. She's got some health problems that we are trying to stay on top of. One of our many blessings is great medical insurance and we are using that.

Going to the temple this morning. I weighed 227.5 this morning which is a good thing. I'm happy with being between 225 and 230 at my height (6'7") and I  feel pretty good. I look in the mirror, though, and this older man is looking back at me. Alas, I will be 78 years old in a couple of weeks. The older man is actually me.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

"I testify that God lives and that His Beloved Son, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, lives and because of the redeeming and enabling power of His infinite Atonement, each of you will be guided and guarded on your path to the temple and back into Their presence. I pray that each of you will be strengthened for that work which will be your finest hour. Live for that beautiful day spoken of in the book of Revelation when you will “walk … in white: [because you] are worthy.”

Sister Elaine S. Dalton, Young Women General President, April 2011

It has been my experience that worthily obtaining a temple recommend and going to the temple are good first steps in obtaining the continued blessings available to us as members of God's kingdom. We need to attend the temple often and participate in the various ordinances available there, Initiatory, Endowment, Sealings, Baptism and Confirmation, as frequently as possible and ponder the meaning of these ordinances. Then keep these things in mind as we study the scriptures and other gospel topics. If we're not moving forward, we are very possibly moving backward.

2023 December 5, Tuesday, Journal Entry

We're taking Cathy to see her eye surgeon this morning. Dr. Jardine. I suspect she will need a second surgery to finalize what was started with the first one. She had terrible vision because of what was probably a birth defect that finally caught up with her as she agreed. One of the many blessings of living in our age is the miracles available through modern medicine. Can is 73 years old and her ancestors lived mostly into their 90's. So I figure she could have another 20 years or so and it would be nice if her vision was good. She needs to see well if for no other reason she might have to start doing most of our driving as I age.

Anyway, I'm hoping this will be a next step in improvement for her and us.

We have the Bishops Storehouse this afternoon. I'm now a manager on this Tuesday afternoon shift so a little more work because, among other things, I have to lock up the Storehouse at 6:30ish, our official closing time. We don't usually turn people away if they're late because that's not don't with our mission so often we're not done until 7 or so.

Some of my friends are going to the stake center at 8:30 to play basketball and pickleball. Is like to do that but I have to be at the temple by 4:45 tomorrow and staying up late tonight might not be smart. I don't think I'll do it.

For our last Mothers Day in Crestwood, Kevin gave Cathy a snow removal device (pictured here). It's been in its box in our garage ever since we moved here. But since our HOA is basically dropping the ball regarding snow removal, I decided to unbox it and put it together. It's obviously quite small and not meant for major snow but it might come in handy in some situations. We'll see.

Come Follow Me

Revelation 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

"I also invite you to study again the account of the Savior’s appearance to the Nephites in the Americas, as recorded in 3 Nephi. Not long before that appearance, His voice was heard among the people, including these words of supplication:

“Will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you?

“… Behold, mine arm of mercy is extended towards you, and whosoever will come, him will I receive.”

Dear brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ extends that same invitation to you today. I plead with you to come unto Him so that He can heal you! He will heal you from sin as you repent. He will heal you from sadness and fear. He will heal you from the wounds of this world.

Whatever questions or problems you have, the answer is always found in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ."

"Our job is not to teach someone who’s going through a rough patch that they are bad or disappointing. On rare occasions we may feel prompted to correct, but most often let’s tell our loved ones in spoken and unspoken ways the messages they long to hear: “Our family feels whole and complete because you are in it.” “You will be loved for the rest of your life—no matter what.”

Christmas Decorations 2023

The big tree.

The small tree, above, has Cathy's creativity all over it.

The hallway mirror and table were mostly decorated by Erica.

The outside decor was reduced because of several factors but it ended up like this and we're OK with it.

Yesterday was pretty quiet. After church I went to choir practice. I want to support the choir for our Christmas Eve Sacrament meeting program. Bishop Schoonover asked me to be the narrator for that presentation so I thought I'd go all in and participate in choir practice for the next three weeks.

The weather should be a little warmer today so I'm hoping to finish up our decorations on the front of the house.

Winter is sort of a blah time for us and it hasn't even really started yet on the calendar.

2023 December 3, Sunday, Journal Entry

The Bishops Storehouse was constantly busy but not overwhelming as it can be at times. It is so rewarding to be part of the Church Welfare System by working at the Bishops Storehouse. We are literally providing blessings to our sisters and brothers who are in need.

It's so cold outside that we really don't want to be outside. And it's only early December... Not even winter yet. Although I'm truly grateful to have a nice home and plenty of resources, Cathy and I both don't enjoy cold, cloudy, snowy days.

I get little hints from time to time that Meredith and Jake might relocate to Texas. They don't say much but many of her family have moved there and her employer, Goldman Sachs, has a larger operation there than here. We don't really want to move again but if they move to Texas there would be less reason for us to remain here. Time will tell.

Come Follow Me

Jude 1:22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:

"The Savior has asked us to do the things which He has done, to bear one another’s burdens, to comfort those who need comfort, to mourn with those who mourn, to feed the hungry, visit the sick, to succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down,  and to “teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom.”

Sister Barbara Thompson, Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidenc, October 2010

It's interesting to study the Come Follow Me curriculum as we near the end of the New Testament. You can see the Apostles trying to hold the church together as The Great Apostacy approaches. Seeing the behavior of some members of the Church back then causes me to be more aware of similar behavior today. However the church and it's leadership is strong and, at least so far, able to stay ahead of Satan and his growing influence.

2023 December 2, Saturday, Journal Entry

We spent most of the day decorating inside for Christmas. At 3 p.m. We picked up Erica and Jill at their Grandma Black's home and they came over and helped.

Erica decorated the table under the mirror in our front hallway. I think she did a masterful job. She did other things as well, as did Jill, then we had quesadillas that Cathy made and played a game.

Then we took them home.

We are still working on the decorations.

This morning we will be at the Bishops Storehouse for our Saturday morning shift.

Come Follow Me

1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

"My dear brothers and sisters, I am grateful to greet you on this glorious Sabbath morning. You are constantly on my mind. I marvel at the way you spring into action whenever you see others in need. I stand amazed at the faith and testimony you demonstrate again and again. I weep over your heartaches, disappointments, and worries. I love you. I assure you that our Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, love you. They are intimately aware of your circumstances, your goodness, your needs, and your prayers for help. Again and again, I pray for you to feel Their love for you.

...What does it mean to overcome the world? It means overcoming the temptation to care more about the things of this world than the things of God. It means trusting the doctrine of Christ more than the philosophies of men. It means delighting in truth, denouncing deception, and becoming “humble followers of Christ.” It means choosing to refrain from anything that drives the Spirit away. It means being willing to “give away” even our favorite sins."

2023 December 1, Friday, Journal Entry

Yesterday we drove out to The Kinlands in Riverton. It's a pretty cute farm with a very cute shop that is nicely decorated and sells cute and useful stuff. Cathy likes the gluten-free bread they make and sell. It's a fun place to go every few weeks to just browse and shop.

Then we stopped by Beth's for a visit.  She had just received delivery of two new chairs for her family room. She bought them at RC Willey which usually does a good job of delivery but this time the delivery men just dropped off the chairs in their boxes in her living room. They didn't assemble them and the bases of the chairs were missing. I'm going to try to go by the store today and get them to go back and get it right. They should assemble the chairs and take the empty cartons away.

Then we went to my thyroid Doc and found that my biopsy indicated that my growing thyroid nodule is benign and since it's not causing me any discomfort or symptoms of any kind we'll just get it looked at again in 9 months.

We're going to have Erica and Jill over this afternoon to help us decorate for Christmas. Jake and I brought the trees up from the basement a couple of days ago and... let the decorating begin.

Come Follow Me

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

"Our Heavenly Father loves us profoundly and perfectly. In His love, He created a plan, a plan of redemption and happiness to open to us all the opportunities and joys we are willing to receive, up to and including all that He has and is. Indeed, His commandments are not grievous—just the opposite. They mark the path of healing, happiness, peace, and joy. Our Father and our Redeemer have blessed us with commandments, and in obeying Their commandments, we feel Their perfect love more fully and more profoundly."

Elder D. Todd Christofferson, October 2021
