Genesis 22: 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

"This story also shows the goodness of God in protecting Isaac and in providing a substitute so he would not have to die. Because of our sins and our mortality, we, like Isaac, are condemned to death. When all other hope is gone, our Father in Heaven provides the Lamb of God, and we are saved by his sacrifice."

Elder Dallin H. Oaks, Apostle

My feeling regarding the situation of Abraham and Isaac is that Abraham was tested so that Abraham would know his level of loyalty to God. We now know that even if Isaac had been sacrificed, he would continue to live on the other side of the Veil. Heavenly Father knew that Jesus would continue to live but someone - in this case His Only Begotten Son - needed to suffer unimaginable pain of every kind in order to satisfy justice for all of our sins and wrong doings. Jesus Christ volunteered to do that for us on condition of our complete repentance. To this day, I don't think most of us fully comprehend the depth of the price He paid in order to satisfy justice for each of us.

Genesis 22: 11 And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

"How painfully difficult it must have been for Abraham, in obedience to God’s command, to take his beloved Isaac into the land of Moriah to offer him as a sacrifice. Can we imagine the heaviness of Abraham’s heart as he journeyed to the appointed place? Surely anguish must have racked his body and tortured his mind as he bound Isaac, laid him on the altar, and took the knife to slay him. With unwavering faith and implicit trust in the Lord, he responded to the Lord’s command. How glorious was the pronouncement, and with what wondered welcome did it come: “Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.”

…Although we are not asked to prove our obedience in such a dramatic and heart-wrenching way, obedience is required of us as well."

"…[T]he experience of Abraham and Isaac was what the scriptures call a type, which is a likeness or reminder of something else. The Book of Mormon prophet Jacob said that the command for Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac was “a similitude of God and his Only Begotten Son.”

"We, like Hagar, are required to see “a well of water.” We, like the woman at the well, must ask of the Lord: “Give me this water, that I thirst not.”

…[S]eek instruction in the word of God, both as written in the scriptures to prophets of old and as spoken tonight by a living prophet. See the well. I had a nice visit with Dr Phillips, my foot doctor, and he pronounced me healed enough to resume any healthy activity I wanted to do such as walking or getting in a hot tub without restriction but to let him know if anything resulted in my foot being worse. This is great news. I need to walk because it's really the only exercise I seem to be able to make myself do and Cathy also loves to walk so we can do it together.

Genesis 19: 26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

"Strangely enough, it may be that the simplest and most powerful prevention and cure for…any unclean act, is to ignore and avoid it. Delete from the mind any unworthy thought that tries to take root. Once you have decided to remain clean, you are asserting your God-given agency. And then, as President Smith counseled, “Don’t look back.”

President Boyd K.Packer, Apostle

This is truly a lesson on repentance. If we truly are repenting of anything we need to not look back with any desire to re do what we are repenting of our even wishing we could re -do. Our hearts need to be firmly in complete support of moving forward for the right reasons.

Genesis 18: 32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.

"Abraham knew that...Sodom and Gomorrah and other places—were wicked cities, housing wicked, godless people...[I]n his compassion for his fellowman, he begged and pleaded with the Lord...but apparently there could not be found even ten...who were righteous...

When we see the depravity of numerous people of our own society in their determination to force upon people vulgar presentations, filthy communications, unnatural practices, we wonder, has Satan reached forth with his wicked, evil hand to pull into his forces the people of this earth? Do we not have enough good people left to stamp out the evil which threatens our world? Why do we continue to compromise with evil and why do we continue to tolerate sin? …

We do not believe in situation-itis; we do not go with the people who think that this is a different age, this is a different time, these people are more enlightened, that was for the old times. Always the Lord will hold to his statements that he has given through the ages, and he will expect [men and women] to live righteously, as he has repeated thousands of times through the ages...

What can we do that we are not doing?...What changes can we make that will guarantee righteousness in this world?"

This has been an interesting weekend. I am diabetic (type 2) and have been monitoring my blood glucose level by using a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system where I attach a small monitor to the back of one of my arms and it is supposed to send a continuous blood glucose level to an app on my iPhone. Two nights ago on Friday night the app showed a dangerously low blood glucose level and I got up and Cathy gave me some honey and a banana and we went back to bed. The app gave pretty normal readings throughout yesterday and I was more careful than usual in my eating throughout the day.

Then last night the same problem occurred twice where my blood glucose showed dangerously low. Finally I got my old fashioned blood glucose monitoring system out and pricked my finger. Everything was normal. I checked it twice more and my glucose level was fine. By then it was nearly for AM and I was wide awake. Poor Cathy was suffering with me as well. I got up and she is trying to sleep. We're both relieved that my blood glucose levels are fine. I'm just going to go back to the old method of finger pricking until I can come up with a more reliable system that I can rely on.

My glucose level was at 170 at 4:10 this morning but that was after our efforts to raise my glucose level. I'm confident that it will come down to more normal levels as time goes by.

Genesis 17: 19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

"Important components of faith are patience, long-suffering, and enduring to the end. The Apostle Paul recounts the faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Sara, concluding that “these all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth”. These faithful Saints knew that this earth life was a journey, not their final destination.
When Abram was 75 years old, the Lord promised him, “I will make of thee a great nation”—this at a time when he and Sarai as yet had no children. He was 86 when Sarai’s handmaiden Hagar “bare Ishmael to Abram”.
And the Lord changed Abram’s name to Abraham and Sarai’s name to Sarah, and when he was nearly a hundred and she was 90 they were promised that Sarah would bear a son to be named Isaac. Amidst their disbelief the Lord asked: “Is any thing too hard for the Lord?” And “Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age”, and the Lord promised: “I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore."

"The crowning temple ordinance is available only to a man and a woman when they are sealed together, forming an eternal family unit. It is by virtue of this and all other priesthood ordinances that the families of the earth shall be blessed.  This sealing ordinance is so central to the Lord’s purposes that He has promised to the faithful who are not sealed in this life through no fault of their own this blessing in the life to come.  No other doctrine in all of religion better confirms God’s commensurate love for both His sons and His daughters."

Abraham 2: 10 And I will bless them through thy name; for as many as receive this Gospel shall be called after thy name, and shall be accounted thy seed, and shall rise up and bless thee, as their father;

"Though the membership of the Church is increasing in its diversity, our sacred heritage transcends our differences. As members of the Church, we are admitted into the house of Israel. We become brothers and sisters, equal heirs to the same spiritual lineage. God promised Abraham that “as many as receive this Gospel shall be called after [his] name, and shall be accounted [his] seed, and shall rise up and bless [him], as their father.”

A promise has been made to everyone who becomes a member of the Church: “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.”

We have become the covenant children of Abraham, a new generation of witnesses to bear testimony that God lives and Jesus is the Christ. Tuesday, at the BYU Weekly Devotional, President Dallin H. Oaks emphasized the warning given by his predecessor, the late president, Russell M. Nelson back in April 2018, General Conference when President Nelson said, as most of us well remember:

“It will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting and constant influence of the Holy Ghost”.

To which President Oaks added,

“One of the many reasons you will need the constant influence of the Holy Ghost is that you live in a season where the adversary has become so effective at disguising truth that if you do not have the Holy Ghost, you will be deceived. Many obstacles lie ahead.”

His desire, said President Oaks, is to help all Latter-day Saints overcome present or future doubts. He then shared four impressions he said he has had of ways to draw closer to the Savior.

First, strengthen faith in Him.

Second, increase humility.

Third, seek help from others.

Fourth, be patient. Keep that in mind. Be pati

I retired nearly 18 years ago in 2008, after serving for 34 years on the Los Angeles Police Department.

For about the first half of my 34 years on LAPD, I was in one traffic-related assignment or another including 13 years as a motorcycle officer… An assignment I truly enjoyed. In all, I estimate that I participated in the investigation  of at least 10,000 traffic accidents… Most of them relatively minor… And I got a pretty good grasp of what causes traffic accidents. The  causes were known as “Primary Collision Factors”. The three most frequent primary collision factors were:

Unsafe speed,

Following too closely and

unsafe lane changes.

But the thing that basically made them all unsafe was:

        - Not being patient!

Patience is a very valuable and hard to maintain attribute.

The day after I retired we left California and moved to Kentucky because we wanted to be able to explore the eastern and southern states and we had very good friends in the Louisville area.

But, after 12 great years in Kentucky, we decided we needed to be closer to family so we moved here to Utah County where one of our sons lives with his wife and four kids and my sister and many of her children and grandchildren also live here.

We arrived here in September, 2020, and after searching for a suitable home we closed a deal here in Lindon after only seeing a floor plan and a vacant lot.

On February 19th of 2021, we started moving in.

Back in 1974, I was a young single guy trying to find a way to make a living.  I had returned from my mission, I had no idea where I was going or what I wanted to do. I definitely had never been a good student in HS or college.

Somehow I determined that the Los Angeles Police Department might be a good fit for me.

  • I was, as I mentioned, single at the time
  • I liked the idea of being a cop in L.A.
  • The weather was good
  • The beaches were close
  • LAPD had good pay and benefits and seemed exciting.
  • AND they had a great retirement program

So off I went. After completing the Police Academy I was assigned to what is known as 77th Street Division in South-Central Los Angeles. One of my first partners was a fellow named Jack Reidy who was not a member of the church but could have been.  He was a good guy.

While I never wavered in my testimony, I have to say I was not very active in the church back in those days. I used “working on Sunday” or “working Morning Watch” (overnight) as a frequent excuse for not going to church. I also lived in Seal Beach with another cop, who was not LDS, and that didn’t help either.

But, Alas, I eventually felt the need to try to be more involved with the church and decided to move inland to Temple City where a friend of mine who was also a policeman and WAS active in the church was living with his wife and kids. (Good example)

At about this time, March of 1977, my old partner, Jack Reidy and his wife, had a friend they wanted to fix me up with.   So we all went out to dinner together.

This woman, my “Blind Date” turned out to be in my opinion, beautiful and charming and most of all, she seemed to like me too. In fact, she is now the still beautiful and charming Sister Cathleen Partridge.

She was not a member of the church at that time but had been trying to find a church that she could be content with.

We went to church together on Mothers’ Day and a member of the Stake Presidency there gave a wonderful talk about the importance and value of women. Cathy enjoyed the meeting and because of that and other important reasons she soon joined the church. We got married in September 1977, and were sealed in the LA Temple a few months later.

A few years later, we established our home in Long Beach.

I still was telling myself that I would be more active in the church if I didn’t have a job that sometimes required me to “Work on Sundays” or “overnight”... I was, after all, a policeman and I tried to convey these thoughts to any ward or stake leaders whenever the occasion arose, BUT...

One day I got the call from the stake executive secretary… Could I meet with President Ward?

President John Ward, our Stake President, wanted to know if I could arrange my work schedule so that I could be more available on Sundays?  Could I handle a calling that would require me to be mostly free on Sundays?

I believe the Spirit was working with him and, once again, with me and I was impressed that I could and should respond positively. So the interview continued and I was called to serve on the Stake High Council of Long Beach East Stake.

I soon learned among many other things that while attending High Council meetings, we were regularly asked to share any spiritual experiences we had recently had. For a while, I sat there week after week thinking that I don’t have spiritual experiences. I’m a cop and I generally don’t  have the same opportunities for “spiritual” experiences as my fellow high councilors.

But then one day, while praying about this very issue, I had a very clear impression that I was in fact having spiritual experiences… but sort of in reverse. When my activities as a policeman brought me into contact with a serious crime or other disturbance, or when booking a suspect  into jail, I was able to see first hand that one or more of our Heavenly Father's commandments had also been disobeyed.

God's commandments and our laws have much in common.

Without getting into details here I’m certain that you are aware that many situations involving serious criminal behavior often produce tragic results.

In almost every case, I could see that had my suspect not broken the law and simultaneously also usually disobeyed one of God’s commandments, that particular tragedy would have been avoided.

My testimony of the importance of keeping the Savior’s commandments and more specifically, the price one pays when one doesn’t obey those commandments, was greatly strengthened.

And I finally had the opportunity to report spiritual experiences while at High Council meetings.

Of course I’m not saying that breaking commandments always results in a police response. But a lot… in fact most of the heartache I witnessed as a cop was caused by someone not obeying God’s commandments.

Why are God’s commandments so frequently disobeyed?

Like the traffic violations about which I spoke earlier, Obviously some people just don’t know of God’s commandments or have forgotten them. Or they have just gotten used to disobedience.

Being patient would have helped.

In explaining the Telestial Kingdom, Section 76 of the D&C reads:

These are they who are liars, and sorcerers, and adulterers, and whoremongers, and whosoever loves and makes a lie.

These are they who suffer the wrath of God on earth.

These are they who suffer the vengeance of eternal fire.”

In other words they aren't obeying Heavenly Fathers commandments and are paying the price.

Disobeying commandments doesn't always or immediately result in heartache or tragedy. But the heartaches and tragedies I witnessed as a policeman usually were caused by someone who:

Began by telling “little white lies” or otherwise cheating or stealing.

Looking at pornography, and, or

Abusing alcohol and/or drugs

Behavior that can only go downhill.

Behavior that is breaking Gods commandments.

And can actually at a very basic level be attributed to:  Not Being Patient.

-----

We only renew our temple recommends every two years.  But President Nelson in his closing remarks in October 2019 General Conference, emphasized that we can and should review the temple recommend questions as often as possible.

In Mosiah 2, 22, King Benjamin tells Us:

“And behold, all that he requires of you is to keep his commandments; and he has promised you that if ye would keep his commandments ye should prosper in the land; and he never doth vary from that which he hath said; therefore, if ye do keep his commandments he doth bless you and prosper you.”

Brothers and sisters: be patient! Think about it:

   Be patient.

Hymn 303, Keep the commandments In this there is safety and peace.
