I worked on the irrigation system for our front garden yesterday. We really hope the garden will be a success. There are some hurdles and I won't go into them now. Maybe when it's all done. I got some good help from Kevin telephonically regarding the automatic watering system. I think I understand how to operate it now. It's a good system and when I'm done I should be able to make adjustments to watering times fairly easily.

After working in the garden and while getting ready to take a shower, we got a call from some of our friends at the Bishops Storehouse wanting to know if we could come over and help. The Storehouse main market area was closed for the remodeling taking place during general conference weekend and the staff was attempting to fill orders directly from the warehouse. It was 6:30 p.m. And they still had many orders to fill. We went over and helped fill orders from the warehouse area then people who needed for picked it up at the east doors. I'm glad they called us and we were glad to hurry over and help them. This segues nicely into today's Come Follow Me topic. Read on

Come Follow Me

Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

"The Apostle Paul taught that we should “bear … one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Accordingly, our baptismal covenants require that we should be “willing to bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light; yea, and [be] willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort.”

Keeping our baptismal covenants helps relieve our own burdens as well as those of burdened souls we serve. Those who offer such assistance to others stand on holy ground."

2023 September 28, Journal Entry

I didn't write much yesterday because on Wednesdays I need to be at the temple, dressed and ready to go at 0500.

Other than that, it's pretty routine. I start at the dressing room than Initiatories and then 5 veils. Sometimes they use the time where I'm assigned to veils to fill in where some other workers have been absent for some reason. I enjoy it. I feel useful and once I'm there it's very relaxing.

Come Follow Me

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

As you walk with the Savior, what fruits of the Spirit have you seen manifested in your life?

"No, following the Savior will not remove all of your trials. However, it will remove the barriers between you and the help your Heavenly Father wants to give you. God will be with you. He will direct your steps. He will walk beside you and even carry you when your need is greatest.

You will experience the sublime fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, [and] faith.”

These spiritual fruits are not a product of temporal prosperity, success, or good fortune. They come from following the Savior, and they can be our faithful attendants even in the midst of the darkest storms.

The fires and tumults of mortal life may threaten and frighten, but those who incline their hearts to God will be encircled by His peace. Their joy will not be diminished. They will not be abandoned or forgotten."

This is the full (mostly) moon coming up east of our house at dusk.

It was a good day at the temple and later just spending time with Cathy.

Yesterday at the Bishops Storehouse we had a pretty quiet day but at the end we helped empty all the shelves so they could be dismantled and replaced during this coming general conference weekend.

Then we picked up Beth and took her to dinner with us at Mi Ranchito.

2023 September 26, Journal Entry

A bit of a hectic day. I took out Prius into Brent Brown Toyota a week ago last Wednesday for 85,000 mile service. There was a broken plastic engine protective wrap that needed replacing and they didn't have that part. I also wanted new floor mats and they didn't have those so I was told the items would take a day or two to get and they would notify me. So a week went by and no notification and I tried to call the service tech last Wednesday and his phone wasn't working. I called the parts department and they said they had received no order for me and that there was no record of an order for me.

I drove in there on Thursday and the tech had all kinds of excuses and was very unorganized. He claimed that the parts had been ordered and they might be in the next day (Friday). I said how about I come in next Monday morning and we'll get it done. He said OK.

So I go in yesterday (3rd visit for this issue) and they had the floor mats but the other part was the wrong one so I'd have to come back. His phone still wasn't working. He wanted me to come back today but I don't have time today so he'll call me (maybe).

I planted the rest of the garden and that took most of the rest of the day. I still have to get the irrigation system back in place and I'm hoping to do that on Thursday.

Today is Tuesday so we'll be at the Bishops Storehouse this afternoon. They are getting ready for an extensive remodel during the upcoming General Conference weekend. New floors and shelves, etc. Might be nice.

Come Follow Me

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

"Being converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ means to walk in a newness of life. To find that “more excellent way,” brothers and sisters, we must cast aside our old selves and our old habits and ways of thinking. We must first recognize how we should change, and then we must make those changes, thus putting on the new and beginning to live as we have never lived before—walking in a newness of life."

Bill Harvey and I did our duty as security at the roving Tabernacle display that is currently at the Highland Stake Center. We were there from 0700-0900. Then Cathy and I went  to church and I sang in the choir. I took a nice walk afterward and got my step goal.

Galatians 1:10, For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

"When people try to save face with men, they can unwittingly lose face with God. Thinking one can please God and at the same time condone the disobedience of men isn’t neutrality but duplicity, or being two-faced or trying to “serve two masters.”

Trying to please others before pleasing God is inverting the first and second great commandments."

About 74 B.C.

22 Yea, methought I saw, even as our father Lehi saw, God sitting upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels, in the attitude of singing and praising their God; yea, and my soul did long to be there.

We served in the Bishops Storehouse yesterday and I really enjoyed it. We were busy from the start but not overly so. There was no last minute rush as there usually is on Saturdays.

We took some peaches over to Jake's house and had a nice visit with him and the kids. They had gone to the temple with Meredith's mom and brother, Ethan. It's nice to see your kids going to the temple.

While we were at lunch I began to have trouble with my iPhone because it wouldn't connect to the internet. It kept saying that I couldn't access the internet because of "no SIM card". We went to the Verizon store on University Parkway and they installed, or activated, a digital sim card in my phone which means that it won't ever need another SIM card. I don't know what that all means but the phone works now and it didn't cost anything.

While I was at the Verizon store I asked the guy helping me if Verizon 5g Wifi was available yet at our house and it is. Newly available. We have been using Xfinity which is connected to a cable and is pretty good but extremely expensive... Somewhere around $240 a month for wifi and cable TV. Verizon 5g comes over the air and is supposed to be at least as powerful as cable. It is 5g where cable is 4g. Anyway, Verizon wireless combined with You Tube TV will be about $100 a month less expensive. So we are going to try it.

Today, Bill Harvey, my next door neighbor, and I are doing some sort of "security assignment" at a Tabernacle exhibit in Lehi from 7-9 a.m. Maybe I'll comment on that later.

We took a sunrise drive over to the Saratoga Springs temple grounds and then drove up American Fork Canyon and the Alpine Loop.

Worked on our garden by planting the flowers that we had previously purchased. Then we got three more boxwood style bushes that we will plant hopefully on Monday.

I'll try to get better photos later.

We will serve at the Lindon Bishop's Storehouse this morning... Usually a very satisfying, thought-provoking and learning experience. I always look forward to our missionary service at the Storehouse.

2 Corinthians 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

"…[F]aith cannot…force our will upon God. We cannot force God to comply with our desires—no matter how right we think we are or how sincerely we pray. Consider the experience of Paul, who pleaded with the Lord multiple times for relief from a personal trial—what he called “a thorn in the flesh.” But that was not God’s will. Eventually, Paul realized that his trial was a blessing, and he thanked God for not answering his prayers the way he had hoped."

Yesterday I dug two holes and succeeded in planting our two new hydrangea shrubs. I think this was the best location for soil quality. Time will tell. In the second photo you can see that I've added back the stone path pieces and the hose.
We still have to plant several smaller plants and then get the irrigation back in play.

We went and picked up Erica later in the day and she helped Cathy decorate the inside of our home for the Fall season.

2023 September 21, Come Follow me and Book of Mormon reading

Come Follow Me

This is a very important lesson or theme for today's study. It's about how Satan succeeds in tricking and intifada us into behaving poorly.

2 Corinthians 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

"Brigham Young said that it is important to “study … evil, and its consequences” (Discourses of Brigham Young, comp. John A. Widtsoe, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1941, pp. 256–57). Since Satan is the author of all evil in the world, it would therefore be essential to realize that he is the influence behind the opposition to the work of God. Alma stated the issue succinctly: “For I say unto you that whatsoever is good cometh from God, and whatsoever is evil cometh from the devil” (Alma 5:40).

Who has not heard and felt the enticings of the devil? His voice often sounds so reasonable and his message so easy to justify. It is an enticing, intriguing voice with dulcet tones. It is neither hard nor discordant. No one would listen to Satan’s voice if it sounded harsh or mean. If the devil’s voice were unpleasant, it would not entice people to listen to it…

As the great deceiver, Lucifer has marvelous powers of deception."

Elder James E. Faust Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostle, October 1987 (36 years ago)

I was a policeman for my whole professional life. Thirtyfour years with LAPD and five years before that. I have witnessed the results of Satan's handiwork first hand and I have often thought, as I have listened to Sunday school, Priesthood and other lessons, that we don't give enough credit to this topic... Satan and his powers and influence. I think I can understand the reluctance, or even fear, of some to get too close to the topic of Satan but I believe it is a mistake to avoid it as much as we seem to do.

It's interesting that in my Book of Mormon reading for today is found the story of a man named Korihor who boldly preached that there is no God. He was finally brought before Alma where he continued to insist that there was no God and also demanded that he would continue so to preach unless Alma showed him a sign. When Korihor was struck dumb as a sign, he wrote the following because he could no longer speak :

Alma 30:53 But behold, the devil hath deceived me; for he appeared unto me in the form of an angel, and said unto me: Go and reclaim this people, for they have all gone astray after an unknown God. And he said unto me: There is no God; yea, and he taught me that which I should say. And I have taught his words; and I taught them because they were pleasing unto the carnal mind; and I taught them, even until I had much success, insomuch that I verily believed that they were true; and for this cause I withstood the truth, even until I have brought this great curse upon me.

Alma Chapter 29, Alma desires to cry repentance with angelic zeal—The Lord grants teachers for all nations—Alma glories in the Lord’s work and in the success of Ammon and his brethren. About 76 B.C.

1 O that I were an angel, and could have the wish of mine heart, that I might go forth and speak with the trump of God, with a voice to shake the earth, and cry repentance unto every people! 2 Yea, I would declare unto every soul, as with the voice of thunder, repentance and the plan of redemption, that they should repent and come unto our God, that there might not be more sorrow upon all the face of the earth.

Chapter 30, Korihor, the anti-Christ, ridicules Christ, the Atonement, and the spirit of prophecy—He teaches that there is no God, no fall of man, no penalty for sin, and no Christ—Alma testifies that Christ will come and that all things denote there is a God—Korihor demands a sign and is struck dumb—The devil had appeared to Korihor as an angel and taught him what to say—Korihor is trodden down and dies. About 76–74 B.C.

After getting home from the temple, I wanted to dig a couple of holes to plant the two beautiful hydrangeas that Cathy picked out for our front garden. But there is a pretty large area that is just muddy all the time.

I noticed a truck nearby that indicated it was a sprinkler and irrigation repair truck with the company that does our neighborhood landscaping for our HOA. So I asked the guy to take a look at my muddy area. Bottom line is there is a very slight depression in our yard that causes water to gather there and not drain. There are no pipe leaks. As you can see, we checked. So I think I'm going to add more soil to sort of reduce the depression and improve runoff and go ahead and plant the hydrangeas and hope for the best.

We worked on our garden yesterday morning. Cathy continued gathering up the wood bark mulch that the developers used and I finished rototilling the soil and raking in the compost material.

Then we went to the Bishops Storehouse and had an enjoyable afternoon serving there.

Today, Wednesday, is temple day for me so I need to start getting ready to go. I have to be in my seat by 0500 for preparation meeting. I truly enjoy serving in the temple and in the Bishops Storehouse.

The wrinkled document seen here is proof that I fired ten rounds of 9mm ammo while under the supervision of an authorized firearms expert and actually hit the target in an acceptable manner. We retired police officers have to do that if we want to maintain our lawful right to carry a concealed firearm virtually anywhere in the U.S. The original sheet I posted here is sort of sloppy. I'm going to try to fix that so it looks better.

I have never fired a weapon at anyone and hope never to do so but I feel that the possibility exists that this ability might be needed at some point so I maintain my legal status as a qualified retired LA Cop. So yesterday I joined with several of my retired co-workers who belong to a group called Wasatch Blue and we all qualified with our hand guns.

I also worked on our front garden and maybe I'll get a photo today or soon to show you.. It's gonna be pretty.

2 Corinthians 9:6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

"In the end we will therefore reap what our lifelong choices have sown. So what does the sum total of our thoughts, desires, words, and works say about our love for the Savior, His chosen servants, and His restored Church? Do our baptismal, priesthood, and temple covenants mean more to us than the praise of the world or the number of “likes” on social media? Is our love for the Lord and His commandments stronger than our love for anything or anyone else in this life?"

Went to church. The primary children put on the Sacrament meeting program. They are all such miracles... Little bundle of joy who will hopefully continue to grow and prosper. Sunday School was good with Matt Croad leading the discussion. It was a really good review of the week's Come Follow Me  material.

Got a neighborhood walk in with Cathy.

Today it's work in the garden. Plus I get a little break to go qualify with my firearm so that I can legally carry it.

We served in the Bishops Storehouse yesterday morning (Saturday) then worked on our front garden for awhile. I watched the BYU v Arkansas football game and when Arkansas got two quick TDs to start the game I thought it they score another quickly I'll go to bed and find out the bad news tomorrow. But BYU ended up scoring the next three touchdowns and went on to win 38-31, and looked pretty good doing it. So now I'm tired but it was fun.

We attended an endowment session at the Saratoga Springs temple yesterday at 1330. It's a beautiful temple and we got there early. I had heard that Initiatories were done differently there so since we were early I walked in to the male Initiatory Desk and asked some questions. They weren't busy and we're very nice. They offered to let me do some Initiatories so I was able to do two. The only thing different was that the chambers are much nicer and much roomier... more conducive to a better atmosphere. Hopefully the new Lindon Temple will be like that. It's a beautiful temple.

Then we met Jake and his four kids at the Nitro Ice Cream Shop in Provo and enjoyed some ice cream together. They have sugar-free ice cream there so I had some with them.

We also drove the Alpine Loop earlier in the day and saw that some of the trees are beginning to turn to fall colors. I guess winter is coming. The picture is Mt. Timpanogos from the east side. Beautiful country.

Come Follow Me

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

"[T]hrough His grace He can make weak things become strong. If we humble ourselves and have faith in Jesus Christ, then His grace will enable us to change. In other words, He will empower us to change. This is possible because, as He says, “my grace is sufficient for all men.” His strengthening, enabling grace gives us power to overcome all obstacles, all challenges, and all weaknesses as we seek to change.

Our greatest weaknesses can become our greatest strengths. We can be changed and “become new creatures.” Weak things literally can “become strong unto [us].”

The Savior worked out His infinite and eternal Atonement so that we could in fact change, repent, and become better. We can actually be born again. We can overcome habits, addictions, and even the “disposition to do evil.” As sons and daughters of a loving Father in Heaven, we have the power within us to change."

Come Follow Me

As I read the commentaries contained in the ScripturePlus app I came to the realization that the Apostle, Paul, was very much like the Apostles and other General Authorities of today. He was dedicated to trying to help his fellow Saints progress in their mortal existence just as today's Apostles are. So, while it is interesting and important to review his teachings and accomplishments, it is of perhaps greater importance to pay heed to what is being taught in our day. It is with this in mind that I make some of my comments in this journal.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

"Faith means that we trust not only in God’s wisdom but that we trust also in His love. It means trusting that God loves us perfectly, that everything He does—every blessing He gives and every blessing He, for a time, withholds—is for our eternal happiness.

With this kind of faith, though we may not understand why certain things happen or why certain prayers go unanswered, we can know that in the end everything will make sense...

Until then, we walk by whatever faith we have, seeking always to increase our faith. Sometimes this is not an easy quest. Those who are impatient, uncommitted, or careless may find faith to be elusive. Those who are easily discouraged or distracted may hardly experience it. Faith comes to the humble, the diligent, the enduring.

It comes to those who pay the price of faithfulness."

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Alma 5:6 And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, you that belong to this church, have you sufficiently retained in remembrance the captivity of your fathers? Yea, and have you sufficiently retained in remembrance his mercy and long-suffering towards them? And moreover, have ye sufficiently retained in remembrance that he has delivered their souls from hell?

7 Behold, he changed their hearts; yea, he awakened them out of a deep sleep, and they awoke unto God. Behold, they were in the midst of darkness; nevertheless, their souls were illuminated by the light of the everlasting word; yea, they were encircled about by the bands of death, and the chains of hell, and an everlasting destruction did await them.

8 And now I ask of you, my brethren, were they destroyed? Behold, I say unto you, Nay, they were not.

9 And again I ask, were the bands of death broken, and the chains of hell which encircled them about, were they loosed? I say unto you, Yea, they were loosed, and their souls did expand, and they did sing redeeming love. And I say unto you that they are saved.

“Shake off the awful chains by which ye are bound” indicates the need to overcome bad habits, even the seemingly little habits that grow into strong “chains of hell.”

3-2023 September 14, Journal Entry

Served in the temple as an Ordinance Worker. A very nice morning. Spent the rest of the day with Cathy celebrating her birthday by just doing whatever we wanted. Got the Prius serviced (85,000 miles) then drove to Fashion Place Mall so Cathy could continue her search for appropriate (modest) church clothing.

2 Corinthians 3:1-3

1 Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you? 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: 3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

Think about it.

2 Corinthians 4:8 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

Because of our faith in Jesus Christ. "Fear not!"

"In the final days of His mortal life, Jesus Christ told His Apostles of the persecutions and hardships they would suffer. He concluded with this great assurance: “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world"". That is the Savior’s message to all of our Heavenly Father’s children. That is the ultimate good news for each of us in our mortal lives.

“Be of good cheer” was also a needed assurance in the world into which the resurrected Christ sent His Apostles...

Two thousand years later we are also “troubled on every side,” and we also need that same message not to despair but to be of good cheer. The Lord has special love and concern for His precious [children]. He knows of your wants, your needs, and your fears. The Lord is all powerful. Trust Him."

An account of the sons of Mosiah, who rejected their rights to the kingdom for the word of God, and went up to the land of Nephi to preach to the Lamanites; their sufferings and deliverance—according to the record of Alma. Comprising chapters 17 through 27.

Chapter 17, The sons of Mosiah have the spirit of prophecy and of revelation—They go their several ways to declare the word to the Lamanites—Ammon goes to the land of Ishmael and becomes the servant of King Lamoni—Ammon saves the king’s flocks and slays his enemies at the water of Sebus. Verses 1–3, about 77 B.C.; verse 4, about 91–77 B.C.; and verses 5–39, about 91 B.C.

Chapter 18, King Lamoni supposes that Ammon is the Great Spirit—Ammon teaches the king about the Creation, God’s dealings with men, and the redemption that comes through Christ—Lamoni believes and falls to the earth as if dead. About 90 B.C.

3-2023 September 13, Journal Entry, Happy Birthday Cathy

Today is Cathy's 73rd birthday. She is beautiful and loves me. A great gift to me.

We served in the Bishops Storehouse yesterday. Nothing noteworthy.

I have to be at the temple and ready to go at 0500 so no Book of Mormon reading today but I generally get at least two chapters a day and today my temple assignment includes five - count 'em -five straight veils to close out my day so I'll get some scripture browsing done in the Veil worker waiting rooms. Unless I'm needed to fill in somewhere which happens. We'll see.

Come Follow Me

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

"Even in the most difficult and darkest of times, there is light and goodness all around us...

However, the adversary would rather have us focus on “mists of darkness … which blindeth the eyes, … hardeneth … hearts … , and … leadeth … away.”

Nevertheless, with perfect understanding of the challenges of our day, the Lord promises, “That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.”

We are children of God. Receiving light, continuing in God, and receiving more light are what we are created to do. From the very beginning, we followed the light; we followed our Heavenly Father and His plan. Seeking the light is in our spiritual DNA."

3-2023 September 12, Journal Entry

Nice quiet Monday morning. Then we took a "short" walk in the canyon... a little over two miles. Visited my sister, Beth.

She's doing well but found out that Karen had a fall on Sunday and broke her right foot. Which means she can't drive her car for a while. Plus she lives on the sixth floor of what will temporarily be a "walk up" apartment building. Her elevator is apparently going to be shut down for a time for repairs. So there is good reason for concern. And she has been planning on moving out of San Francisco and into Beth's home in Provo. This will require some detailed planning and assistance now with her injury.  Stay tuned.

We picked up Erica after school and took her to lunch at Guru's. That was nice. It was a special treat for her on her 14th birthday. She is a very special young lady and we want to always be there for her.

2 Corinthians 7

“The apostle Paul taught that ‘godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation … but the sorrow of the world worketh death’. Godly sorrow inspires change and hope through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Worldly sorrow pulls us down, extinguishes hope and persuades us to give in to further temptation.

“Godly sorrow leads to conversion and a change of heart. It causes us to hate sin and love goodness. It encourages us to stand up and walk in the light of Christ’s love. True repentance is about transformation, not torture or torment. Yes, heartfelt regret and true remorse for disobedience are often painful and very important steps in the sacred process of repentance. But when guilt leads to self-loathing or prevents us from rising up again, it is impeding rather than promoting our repentance.”

3-2023 September 11, Birthday Celebration

Yesterday was basically all about birthdays. Cathy's, Erica's, and Alexander & Fredrick. Many gathered in Vineyard at the Hexburg residence where we enjoyed visiting, eating BBQ and birthday cake and opening presents. It was a beautiful day.

Come Follow Me

2 Corinthians 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

"Being converted unto the Lord starts with an unwavering commitment to God, followed by making that commitment part of who we are. Internalizing such a commitment is a lifelong process that requires patience and ongoing repentance. Eventually, this commitment becomes part of who we are, embedded in our sense of self, and ever present in our lives. Just as we never forget our own name no matter what else we are thinking about, we never forget a commitment that is etched in our hearts."

Elder Dale G. Renlund Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostle, October 2019

2 Corinthians 2:5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.... 7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

"First of all, it must be recognized that the great principle of repentance is largely dependent upon forgiveness. He who has transgressed and then decides to repent is expected to seek out those he has offended, to solicit their forgiveness. I know of one man who carried his grudge to the grave after 40 long, bitter years of refusing to forgive. What a tragedy! His light was never able to shine forth as intended. As recorded in 1 John, “But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes” (1 Jn. 2:11). Paul wrote to the Saints at Corinth about the importance of forgiving readily, “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Cor. 2:11).

Only as we forgive do we earn the right to be forgiven. This is an eternal principle, so taught by the Savior when he said: “For if ye forgive men their trespasses your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matt. 6:14)."

3-2023 September 10, Journal Entry Our 46th Anniversary

Today marks 46 years of wedded bliss between Cathy and me. She has been a perfect fit for me from the day we met. I won't try to elaborate any more than that other than to say that this is not wedding anniversary hyperbole. It's true.

We worked again in the Bishops Storehouse yesterday and it is definitely an educational experience in many ways. I think it is something I would try to do indefinitely because what we provide for people are needed goods that are going to become even more difficult to get as time goes on. I hope that the Church will look into ways of providing the food and other things we have in a more efficient way and I think they will. I hope to be a part of that process as much as I can for the foreseeable future.

1 Corinthians 16:14 Let all your things be done with charity.

"Charity is, perhaps, in many ways a misunderstood word. We often equate charity with visiting the sick, taking in casseroles to those in need, or sharing our excess with those who are less fortunate. But really, true charity is much, much more.

Real charity is not something you give away; it is something that you acquire and make a part of yourself. And when the virtue of charity becomes implanted in your heart, you are never the same again....

Perhaps the greatest charity comes when we are kind to each other, when we don’t judge or categorize someone else, when we simply give each other the benefit of the doubt or remain quiet. Charity is accepting someone’s differences, weaknesses, and shortcomings; having patience with someone who has let us down; or resisting the impulse to become offended when someone doesn’t handle something the way we might have hoped. Charity is refusing to take advantage of another’s weakness and being willing to forgive someone who has hurt us. Charity is expecting the best of each other." Elder Marvin J. Ashton Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostle, April 1992

Charity has been the major topic in many Come Follow Me lessons lately and for good reason. Elder Ashton's statement quoted above is one of the best I have seen.

We should concern ourselves about our commitment to this celestial principle at all times, throughout each day, without exception.

3-2023 September 9, Journal Entry

This coming Sunday we had planned to have Jake and Meredith and their kids over to our place for dinner and to celebrate four birthdays, Alexander, Fredrick, Erica and Cathy (grandma). Then Jake called and said that Meredith's mom and her brother, Ethan wanted to be involved and we could have it at Jake's house. Then some others got involved and the attendees grew in number to eighteen at latest count and had moved to Hexburgs home in Vineyard. So we ordered a cake from Costco and Cathy is bringing the meat to barbecue.

So we walked up in the canyon then went shopping for stuff.

I have been taking a medication called Mounjaro for my diabetes and it works really well. But it's so popular that pharmacies can't keep it in stock. I ordered a prescription refill over two weeks ago and virtually every day the pharmacy says they don't have it but they will in two days. It's a weekly injection and I took my last one last Sunday and still no refill. Turns out my particular dosage is the problem. Pharmacies have the next higher dosage but not mine. Naturally they don't tell me this so, anyway, now that I've found out, I'm trying to get my doctor to simply prescribe the next higher dosage which I think he'll do, but now it's Saturday so I probably won't get the prescription til Monday but that should be OK.

So I spent the last few hours yesterday working on my prescription.

Come Follow Me

1 Corinthians 15:29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

"Because baptism by water and of the Spirit is essential for full salvation, in the eternal nature of things all of God’s children should have this opportunity, including those who have lived in centuries past. The doctrine of baptism of the living for the dead in the temple was understood and practiced in the early Christian church. Paul, in his great discussion about the Resurrection, reasoned: “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?” Doing something so vital for those who cannot do it for themselves is truly Christlike."

President James E. Faust, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, April 2001

As with many things in life, actually doing something as opposed to just saying you will or saying that you truly support something is much more significant. Baptism is one of the first four principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Every person who wants to return to Heavenly Father's presence has to be baptized. And baptism for the dead makes that possible. If we don't fully understand that now, we will in the future.

About 82 B.C.

I played pickleball for two hours. There were only four of us so we all played every game. Pretty good exercise. Then Cathy and I walked for nearly three miles. Obviously I got my steps in and that's good. I just weighed myself at 234. When I started keeping track seriously back in May, I weighed 257. I'm trying to lose weight by changing my lifestyle. I find that by eating a little less and by eating more sensibly that I will lose weight and at the same time not feel like I'm suffering. So far it's working. My first goal was to get down to 238 which I did. Now I'm shooting for 225 where I hope to settle in and stay. Nine pounds to go.

We decided to take lunch - Zao tacos - over to Jake and Meredith which they appreciated.

1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

"So today we celebrate the gift of victory over every fall we have ever experienced, every sorrow we have ever known, every discouragement we have ever had, every fear we have ever faced—to say nothing of our resurrection from death and forgiveness for our sins. That victory is available to us because of events that transpired on a weekend precisely like this nearly two millennia ago in Jerusalem."

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, April 2015

Apparently back in Paul's day as well as today, I'm told, there were and are those who do not believe in a resurrection. I'm not sure why that is. Life being eternal makes far more sense to me than life just ending at death. When a person dies, obviously something changes... Something leaves that body and that something is his or her spirit. And for those who doubt there are countless reasonable and, to me believable, accounts of Heavenly visitors. Plus it's so much more comforting to believe in eternity.

Chapter 7 Christ will be born of Mary—He will loose the bands of death and bear the sins of His people—Those who repent, are baptized, and keep the commandments will have eternal life—Filthiness cannot inherit the kingdom of God—Humility, faith, hope, and charity are required. About 83 B.C.

Chapter 8 Alma preaches and baptizes in Melek—He is rejected in Ammonihah and leaves—An angel commands him to return and cry repentance unto the people—He is received by Amulek, and the two of them preach in Ammonihah. About 82 B.C.

2023 September 7, Journal Entry

I didn't create a Journal entry yesterday because I had to be at the temple and ready to go at 5 a.m.

I like to do my entries early in the day because that's when I usually have most uninterrupted time available. I was able to review some Come Follow Me material but I didn't take any time to write about it. That may be the case on Wednesdays in the future when I start at 0500 in the temple.

I also did not get my 7500 steps in yesterday but I plan on getting it done today, tomorrow and Saturday which will give me five days of 7500+ steps this week. My goal is to do a minimum of four days a week but more is better. I'll play pickleball this morning with my equally elderly neighborhood buddies, then the plan is to walk at least three miles with Cathy. Retirement is wonderful.

As I mentioned, I served in the temple yesterday. I also served in the Bishops Storehouse on Tuesday afternoon. I want to improve on being non-judgemental and on being charitable.

I was sitting in my parked car at Walmart the other day and a woman and her daughter knocked on my window. She had a hand-painted sign indicating she needed money. I talked to her and gave her some money. She was from Romania and was very grateful. Both she and her daughter thanked me profusely.

Working in the Bishops Storehouse gives me a continuous reminder of how many people have great needs not just for food but for other material goods and how blessed we are. So one small thing I can do is I've determined that I will try to have some cash on hand that I can share when I'm presented with the opportunity to help others. And to try to see everyone as a child of God and my brother or sister and help them in any way I  can.

We went to see the play, Clue, at the Hale theater in Orem yesterday. It was moderately entertaining.

Then Cathy wanted to get a gift for Erica's birthday present. So after that we decided to stop at In N Out and eat protein style hamburgers. These are hamburgers wrapped in lettuce rather than a bun and are, therefor,a little healthier. They were good. Then we called Beth and asked her if we could bring her a burger and she gratefully accepted our offer. We enjoyed a nice visit with Beth and found that Karen is moving out of her San Francisco apartment and moving in with Beth... At least temporarily. It will be nice for both of them to have each other for companionship and it will be good to see Karen more often.

Come Follow Me

1 Corinthians 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

As I look at this scripture and ponder it I have come to the conclusion that it could use a comma after the word only. What I mean is that if we have hope in Christ only during mortality... only in this life, we are miserable. We do have hope and strong faith that life is eternal and families can be eternal.

" The Resurrection transformed the lives of those who witnessed it. Should it not transform ours? We will all rise from the grave. …Because of the life and eternal sacrifice of the Savior of the world, we will be reunited with those we have cherished. On that day we will know the love of our Heavenly Father. On that day we will rejoice that the Messiah overcame all that we could live forever.

Because of the sacred ordinances we receive in holy temples, our departure from this brief mortality cannot long separate relationships that have been fastened together with cords made of eternal ties.

It is my solemn testimony that death is not the end of existence. “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.”  Because of the risen Christ, “death is swallowed up in victory.”

Because of our beloved Redeemer, we can lift up our voices, even in the midst of our darkest Fridays, and proclaim, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”

The words which Alma, the High Priest according to the holy order of God, delivered to the people in their cities and villages throughout the land. Beginning with chapter 5.

Alma Chapter 5 To gain salvation, men must repent and keep the commandments, be born again, cleanse their garments through the blood of Christ, be humble and strip themselves of pride and envy, and do the works of righteousness—The Good Shepherd calls His people—Those who do evil works are children of the devil—Alma testifies of the truth of his doctrine and commands men to repent—The names of the righteous will be written in the book of life. About 83 B.C.

16 I say unto you, can you imagine to yourselves that ye hear the voice of the Lord, saying unto you, in that day: Come unto me ye blessed, for behold, your works have been the works of righteousness upon the face of the earth?

3-2023 September 5, Journal Entry - Cathy visits the Eye Specialist

We visited Jake and his famiky after breakfast. Picked up Erica and Jill and took them home to feed them breakfast then Cathy took them out to look at stuff at Home Goods and Hobby Lobby. It was Labir Day so they had no school. Then Jake brought them back last night along with Fredrick and Alexander do quesadillas. We hadn't seen all the kids this much in quite awhile so it was a very good day.

Today, Cathy had an appointment with an eye specialist who we hoped would be able to help her vision problems. That poor woman is really suffering. This guy was pretty impressive. Very kind but confident and seemed to really know what he was doing. Bottom line, Cathy's vision problems "Are correctable" with eye surgery. There is a 30% chance it will require a serving surgery. Apparently there are two problems with the muscles that control her left eye. The first surgery should correct the most notable problem and it's possible that she will be able to compensate on her own to correct the second problem. If not, the second surgery should do the trick.

His name is Dr. Jardin and he mentioned that Cathy's eye problems good very well have contributed to her neck pain issues because she has probably been cocking her head to one side and tilting it a little in order to compensate for her eyes issues. If that's so then maybe this will be an even greater success for her in that the correcting of her head will no longer be needed. I pray that that's so.

Then it's Bishops Storehouse for our Tuesday afternoon shift. Should be much quieter than Saturday.

Come Follow Me

1 Corinthians 14:10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

We are surrounded by persuasive voices, beguiling voices, belittling voices, sophisticated voices, and confusing voices. I might add that these are loud voices. I admonish you to turn the volume down and to be influenced instead by that still, small voice which will guide you to safety. Remember that one with authority placed his hands on your head after you were baptized, confirming you a member of the Church and saying, “Receive the Holy Ghost.” Open your hearts, even your very souls, to the sound of that special voice which testifies of truth. As the prophet Isaiah promised, “Thine ears shall hear a word… , saying, This is the way, walk ye in it.” May we ever be in tune, that we might hear this comforting, guiding voice which will keep us safe.

President Thomas S. Monson, October 2015, "Keep the Commandments"

In our time, the Spirit of the Lord, or Holy Ghost, is vital to our continued existence and progress. We truly don't know who is telling the truth in our world. And even when people aren't outright lying they are often misleading.

We need the Holy Ghost to guide us. And He will if we are living and behaving properly.

Without being in any way disrespectful, I see the purpose and mission of the Holy Ghost as a celestial gift of a perfect wifi type system. Always available in all places and in every circumstance to give us the right answers or guidance if we are living the right way. A wonderful, perfect and absolutely necesary gift from our loving Father in Heaven.

3-2023 September 4, Journal Entry

Went to church. Walked in the 'hood. Caught up on some of ScripturePlus app reading.

We took a drive last evening out to Eagle Mountain and saw that there are numerous housing projects either recently completed or nearing completion. We actually saw a chapel under construction. That's the first new chapel I've seen being built other than the ones adjacent to the Saratoga Springs and Orem temples since we arrived here three years ago. Gives me hope that we might see a chapel built in our neighborhood one day. It seems that most of the chapels in Lindon and Pleasant Grove already have for units meeting in each of them.

1 Corinthians 14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

Seems to encourage us to speak with confidence when bearing our testimonies. I personally have tried to adopt the pattern of only speaking when I'm confident that I should, given the circumstances, whatever they may be. A lot of speaking is useless, or even dangerous in some situations, if not done thoughtfully.

I've also become a little disheartened with the ScripturePlus app because it seems to be more a history of what happened back in New Testament times rather than focusing on the actual meanings and implications of the teachings of the Savior and His Apostles as they apply today.

Mt. Timpanogos looked very majestic under beautiful clouds yesterday.

We worked at the Bishops Storehouse and, being the Saturday before Labor Day I suppose, it was by far the busiest day there that we have experienced so far. Afterward I took a walk in the neighborhood while Cathy napped. After that, Cathy and I both walked for another mile and then we took a little drive.

I slept all the way to 6:00 a.m. this morning so now it's the in the afternoon and I'm just now doing Journal and Come Follow Me studies.

1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

"The problem is that we don’t always see things as clearly as we would like to. The Apostle Paul compared it to looking “through a glass, darkly.” There’s a lot of confusion in the world about what is right and wrong. Truth gets twisted to make evil seem good and good seem evil.

But when you earnestly seek the truth—eternal, unchanging truth—your choices become much clearer. Yes, you still have temptation and trials. Bad things still happen. Puzzling things. Tragic things. But you can manage when you know who you are, why you are here, and when you trust God."

2023 Seprember 2, Journal Entry

We  had Jake and his son, Alexander, over for breakfast and enjoyed a nice visit with them.

We decided to drive by the Lindon Temple construction site and couldn't help notice the progress being made there. There are a lot of building supplies stacked up in the yard there that appear to be for interior construction. It's hard to imagine that this lovely building won't be finished very soon.

Brings to mind the fact that when all of the temples currently being built or already existing in Utah County are up and running, that will bring the total number to seven. I can't help hoping that the millennium is near and that these temples will be operating at near full capacity.

The Mt. Timpanogos Temple is often running well beliw capacity, at least on Wednesday mornings when I'm there. A lot of the Endowment sessions have fewer than thirty people in rooms that can hold nearly a hundred. Initiatories are well-attended though.

"Charity, the pure love of Christ, is not an act, but a condition or state of being. Charity is attained through a succession Acts that result in a conversion. Charity is something one becomes." President Dallin H. Oaks

"True charity is shown perfectly and purely in Christ's unfailing, ultimate and atoning love for us. It is that charity, his pure love for us, without which we would be nothing, hopeless, of all men and women most miserable . Life has its shares of fears and failures. Sometimes things fall short. Sometimes people fail us or economies or businesses or governments fail us. But one thing in time or eternity does not fail us: the pure love of Christ." Jeffrey R. Holland

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

3-2023 September 1, Journal Entry

Officially, I retired from LAPD 15 years ago. I started my LAPD career near the end of September 1974, in Academy class 10-74, and serve until September 1st, 2008 - 34 years.

We took a quick 3 mile walk yesterday morning so that Cathy could come home and do a scheduled ministering visit. Then we had lunch at Chick-fil-a in Provo before driving up to Cottonwood Heights to shop at World Market and Whole Foods.

Cottonwood Heights is a thriving and modern shopping area in Salt Lake County located southeast of SLC with a lot of modern businesses. I think that Pleasant Grove will be like that as Utah County continues to boom. In fact in talking to my friend, Guy Fugal, who is the mayor of PG and who is also an Ordinance Worker with me on Wednesday mornings, he mentioned that we are getting a Chick-Fil-A soon in Pleasant Grove. What better way to measure the future success of an area than to have a Chick-fil-A restaurant 😋. The area, which is less than a mile northwest of us near the I-15 freeway is growing fast. We'll see.

Come Follow Me

This is the second day in a row where charity is discussed. It is a very important subject to me so I'm repeating some of it.

1 Corinthians 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Understanding charity or being charitable is not easy. And our scriptures have not indicated that it would be. Even “charity suffereth long” requires our thoughtful interpretation.

Moroni 7:47 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.

It seems that charity is a characteristic that can take a lifetime to learn and attain. Simplistically, charity is off the charts as a description of unconditional love. It is thinking of the needs of others and acting on those needs while being concerned primarily for their well-being as opposed to your own. It is, as Moroni wrote, "The pure love of Christ".

I had the question, since I have spent so much of my life in traffic enforcement and I am often thinking about the actions of myself and others as we drive our vehicles in our daily travels, do we truly exhibit the "pure love of Christ" while we actually live our lives on a day to day basis.

Hmmm

It's easy to talk about "the pure love of Christ" but are we successful in actually implementing it? Can we do better? I have to admit, I can.
