I started to decorate the front porch yesterday by putting up the front door decoration. The lights are pretty cool because they are battery powered and when you turn them on they can be set to automatically turn off in six hours. Then 18 hours later they will come on again for another six hours. So the trick is to turn them on when it gets dark outside or about 5 pm. I did that yesterday afternoon and then checked at midnight and they had gone off as planned. I'll check this evening to see that they automatically came on and if they do... Pretty cool.

I tried to walk at University Place Mall and it was more crowded than I have ever seen it. I was able to get two complete laps done but it was a bit of a chore. It was good that Cathy wasn't with me because I dint think she would have stuck with it for two laps. Anyway I got my 7500 steps plus in so that was good. We actually drove over there together earlier in the day at about 0900 but the parking lot was jammed and there were people everywhere. We don't remember Black Friday being so popular but then we've never really gone shopping or to any mall on black Friday that we recall. Anyway we gave up trying to walk in the morning and I sort of forced my way through the crowds later in the day.

We're going to pick up Erica this morning and take her to breakfast then she's going to help Cathy decorate the inside of our home for Christmas. I will see if I can string up some lights on the front porch and report back.

Come Follow Me

Ether 12:33 And again, I remember that thou hast said that thou hast loved the world, even unto the laying down of thy life for the world, that thou mightest take it again to prepare a place for the children of men.

34 And now I know that this love which thou hast had for the children of men is charity; wherefore, except men shall have charity they cannot inherit that place which thou hast prepared in the mansions of thy Father.

"Charity is our love for the Lord, shown through our acts of service, patience, compassion, and understanding for one another.

Additional insight into the pure love of Christ is found in Ether: “[Jesus has] loved the world, even unto the laying down of [His] life for the world, that [He might] take it again to prepare a place for the children of men. And now I know that this love which [He has] for the children of men is charity.” Charity is also the Lord’s love for us, shown through His acts of service, patience, compassion, and understanding.

The “pure love of Christ” refers not only to our love for the Savior but to His love for each of us."

President Bonnie D. Parkin, Relief Society General President, October 2003

Ether 14:1 And now there began to be a great curse upon all the land because of the iniquity of the people, in which, if a man should lay his tool or his sword upon his shelf, or upon the place whither he would keep it, behold, upon the morrow, he could not find it, so great was the curse upon the land. 2 Wherefore every man did cleave unto that which was his own, with his hands, and would not borrow neither would he lend; and every man kept the hilt of his sword in his right hand, in the defence of his property and his own life and of his wives and children.

There are so many wars and battles described in and toward the conclusion of the Book of Mormon that the above verses, Ether 14:1-2, kind of sums up how hopeless things were. There are many living today who seem to have that same attitude and, of course, it's getting worse.

Ether14:21 And so great and lasting had been the war, and so long had been the scene of bloodshed and carnage, that the whole face of the land was covered with the bodies of the dead. 22 And so swift and speedy was the war that there was none left to bury the dead, but they did march forth from the shedding of blood to the shedding of blood, leaving the bodies of both men, women, and children strewed upon the face of the land, to become a prey to the worms of the flesh. 23 And the scent thereof went forth upon the face of the land, even upon all the face of the land; wherefore the people became troubled by day and by night, because of the scent thereof.

Ya think?

We enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving day meal and visit at Eileen Black's home (Meredith's mom). And pretty much relaxed the rest of the day.

Cathy's health seems to be improving. We're hoping to get some exercise today then we have an Endowment session scheduled for tomorrow morning at our Mt Timpanogos Temple at 0630.

The weather has been good but cold. I'll see if I have the will to decorate the front of the house either today or tomorrow. I can't really do any climbing on stools so I'm not sure how much decorating I can actually accomplish but we'll see.

Come Follow Me

Ether 12: 26... the Lord spake unto me, saying: Fools mock, but they shall mourn; and my grace is sufficient for the meek, that they shall take no advantage of your weakness;

27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

28 Behold, I will show unto the Gentiles their weakness, and I will show unto them that faith, hope and charity bringeth unto me—the fountain of all righteousness.

"Of course, all of us will fall short of our divine potential, and there is some truth in the realization that alone we are not enough. But the good news of the gospel is that with the grace of God, we are enough...

The surprising truth is that our weaknesses can be a blessing when they humble us and turn us to Christ. Discontent becomes divine when we humbly approach Jesus Christ with our want, rather than hold back in self-pity...

Have you ever felt your talents and gifts were too small for the task ahead? I have. But you and I can give what we have to Christ, and He will multiply our efforts. What you have to offer is more than enough—even with your human frailties and weaknesses—if you rely on the grace of God."

Going to Eileen Black's home (Meredith's mom) today for Thanksgiving Day meal.

Yesterday we drove up to Draper to a place called "Pirate-O's". A very unusual place where they sell ask kinds of candy and trinkets and pretty good sandwiches.it's got stuff that we haven't seen in decades, for example Cracker Jack with "prizes" and canned fluffy animals. That's right. They have canned bats, canned beavers, canned whatever and they are just little fluffy toys that are actually in cans. Cute idea.

Then we came home and Cathy needed to rest while I went over to University Place Mall and walked.

Excellent talk from most recent General Conference (October 2024)

"Seek Him with All Your Heart" By Bishop L. Todd Budge, Second Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric

  1. Take Time to be Holy, William D. Longstaff

  2. Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.
  3. Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
Spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone.
    By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.
  4. Take time to be holy, let Him be thy Guide;
And run not before Him, whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord,
And, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word.
  5. Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul,
Each thought and each motive beneath His control.
Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love,
Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.
  6. Ether 12: 19 And there were many whose faith was so exceedingly strong, even before Christ came, who could not be kept from within the veil, but truly saw with their eyes the things which they had beheld with an eye of faith, and they were glad.
  7. "Is it possible to begin to see as God sees even while living on the surface of this planet—to feel this overview feeling? I believe we can, through the eye of faith, zoom out and view ourselves and our families with hope and joy.
  8. The scriptures agree. Moroni speaks about those whose faith was so “exceedingly strong” that they “truly saw … with an eye of faith, and they were glad.”
  9. With an eye focused on the Savior, they felt joy and knew this truth: because of Christ, it all works out."

I really enjoyed serving at the Bishops Storehouse yesterday. As anticipated, it was very busy. One of the greatest things about serving there is the other Missionaries who also serve there. Great people. Cathy was unable to serve though she really wanted to. She is still not well but seems to be improving.

Ether 12:11 Wherefore, by faith was the law of Moses given. But in the gift of his Son hath God prepared a more excellent way; and it is by faith that it hath been fulfilled.

12 For if there be no faith among the children of men God can do no miracle among them; wherefore, he showed not himself until after their faith.

...[T]his world is full of philosophies, cultures, and ideas competing for our...attention. The great and spacious building advertises its membership daily using the most current media channels. “But in the gift of his Son,” the prophet Moroni taught, “hath God prepared a more excellent way.”

As we partner with God through covenants and become His agents...He will sanctify our intentions, inspire our teachings, and temper our invitations...

Cathy is still not feeling well. She stayed home yesterday while I walked at University Plaza then ran a couple of other errands. She made a wonderful batch of soup though and I had some for dinner.

I don't know if she will be able to go to the Bishops Storehouse today. I know she wants to. It's Thanksgiving week so it ought to be busy but the weather is projected to be terrible. Very cold and rain or snow. There's a lot of need for food and the church tries hard to provide. I truly enjoy being a part of the process that helps people put food on their table.

Ether 12:6 And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.

"In our world where instant gratification is the expectation, we are often guilty of expecting the reward without having to work for it. I believe Moroni is telling us that we must do the work first and exercise faith by living the gospel, and then we will receive the witness that it is true. True conversion occurs as you continue to act upon the doctrines you know are true and keep the commandments, day after day, month after month."

I ate terribly yesterday. Basically had two dinners plus a brownie and ice cream and no exercise. Thus my weight this morning of 230. I will do better starting right now.

We've got nothing on our calendar this Monday morning and my plan is to get back to my physical therapy exercises and at least 7500 steps of walking.

It's too cold outside to put up outdoor Christmas decorations. If it gets above 40 and the sun is shining I may try to at least decorate the front porch.

Ether 12:4 Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God.

Amen!

"Hope is the anchor of our souls. I know of no one who is not in need of hope—young or old, strong or weak, rich or poor...

Peace comes through hope...

Hope is trust in God’s promises, faith that if we act now, the desired blessings will be fulfilled in the future...

The unfailing source of our hope is that we are sons and daughters of God and that His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, saved us from death."

President James E. Faust, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, October 1999

"[H]ope is a living gift, a gift that grows as we increase our faith in Jesus Christ. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for.” We build this substance—the evidence blocks of our faith—through prayer, temple covenants, keeping the commandments, continually feasting on the scriptures and the words of modern-day prophets, taking the sacrament, serving others, and worshipping weekly with our fellow Saints."

Elder Neil L. Andersen Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2024

Ether 12:2 And Ether was a prophet of the Lord; wherefore Ether came forth in the days of Coriantumr, and began to prophesy unto the people, for he could not be restrained because of the Spirit of the Lord which was in him.

3 For he did cry from the morning, even until the going down of the sun, exhorting the people to believe in God unto repentance lest they should be destroyed, saying unto them that by faith all things are fulfilled— 4 Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God. 5 And it came to pass that Ether did prophesy great and marvelous things unto the people, which they did not believe, because they saw them not.

I'm going to try to resume some of the activities I was involved in before my spine surgery. Choir practice today. Plus I'm going to try to manage my on line storage. I've got a lot of documents, emails and photos that I just don't want or need anymore so I'm going to try to delete these and organize the things I want to keep a little better.

We took Cathy to the Insta-care facility in American Fork yesterday morning and she got a prescription for medication that should help with her congestion and child symptoms. As of last night she seemed to be doing a lot better. She really wants to go with me to fill our assignment at the Bishops Storehouse this Tuesday. It's going to be very busy because Thanksgiving day is this Thursday.

Cathy just got up and advised me that she didn't sleep well at all. The Sudafed she got from the pharmacist yesterday was "non-drowsy" and it kept her up most of the night. It looks like they have some night time Sudafed at Target so I'll get some of that for her today and hopefully she'll sleep better.

Ether 11: 8 And the people began to repent of their iniquity; and inasmuch as they did the Lord did have mercy on them.

"The Lord used the math of seventy times seven as a metaphor of His infinite Atonement, His boundless love, and His limitless grace. “Yea, and as often as my people repent will I forgive them their trespasses against me.

Obviously, the Savior was not establishing an upper limit of 490. That would be analogous to saying that partaking of the sacrament has a limit of 490, and then on the 491st time, a heavenly auditor intercedes and says, “I’m so sorry, but your repentance card just expired—from this point forward, you’re on your own.”

Cathy is still recovering from a couple of issues. Last Monday's surgery seems to be on pace for full recovery but she had a bad cold before we left for Florida. We were worried that she might not be able to have the surgery but she seemed to be healing. We had her checked at our local ER for step throat or other noteworthy medical issues and she passed that. Then we got a covid test kit from Walgreens and that showed negative for covid then she actually got in to see Dr. Welch and he felt she was OK to go after speaking to the facility in Tampa.

So after the surgery she seemed to be coming along just fine then her cold came storming back. It's now Saturday and she is really suffering. I think we will go to a immediate care facility and see if maybe antibiotics are in order.

"Work is a blessing from God. It is a fundamental principle of salvation, both spiritual and temporal...We are cocreators with God. He gave us the capacity to do the work he left undone, to harness the energy, mine the ore, transform the treasures of the earth for our good. But most important, the Lord knew that from the crucible of work emerges the hard core of character."

"The consistency of pleas from prophets to reflect on the goodness of God is striking. Our Heavenly Father wants us to recall His and His Beloved Son’s goodness, not for Their own gratification but for the influence such remembrance has on us. By considering Their kindness, our perspective and understanding are enlarged. By reflecting on Their compassion, we become more humble, prayerful, and steadfast."

It seems like we spent most of yesterday jammed into airline seats. I could literally almost not move for two flights of about 2 1/2 hours each. Enough of that. We're home now and I love it even though it's cold.

"I honor those who selflessly serve each week in wards and branches around the world by going above and beyond in fulfilling callings. But callings come and go. Even more impressive to me are the many who without formal callings find ways to consistently serve and lift others…If you look closely in your ward or branch, you will find examples like these. There are always members who seem to know who needs help and when to offer it."

We added an extra day to our Florida journey and it paid off pretty nicely. We took a drive that got us to the beach. The water was calm and the temperature was low 80s. Very nice. But we also saw a lot of damage still being cleaned up after the two devastating hurricanes that ripped through here just a few short weeks ago.

We also went to lunch at a beach hangout called "Whiskey Joe's" that was right on the beach and very cute but the food was expensive and kind of medium at best. Still, it was fun and, I think, contributed greatly to Cathy feeling better.

Ether 6:12 And they did land upon the shore of the promised land. And when they had set their feet upon the shores of the promised land they bowed themselves down upon the face of the land, and did humble themselves before the Lord, and did shed tears of joy before the Lord, because of the multitude of his tender mercies over them.

"If we are faithful in keeping our covenants, we too will one day arrive safely home and will bow before the Lord and shed tears of joy for the multitude of His tender mercies in our lives, including the sorrows that made space for more joy.

I testify that as we commend ourselves unto the Lord and consistently and resiliently trust in Jesus Christ and His divine purposes in our lives, He will visit us with assurances, speak peace to our souls, and cause us to “hope for our deliverance in him.”

We were scheduled to fly back to Provo this afternoon but Cathy came out of surgery yesterday feeling pain that she probably should have anticipated. So she was adament about delaying our return to Provo by a day. So that has all been arranged at some significant expense. I think her pain has decreased now to a point where we probably could have maintained our scheduled departure but that's history now. I have to admit that the weather here is much nicer and will be in the 70s again today. So that's nice. And our room is large and comfortable.

I'm not sure what we're going to do today but she's resting comfortably and that's a good thing. Yesterday was spent getting the surgery and post-op stuff completed.

Personally, I had a good night's sleep and actually I think Cathy did as well and that's a good thing.

Ether 6:9 And they did sing praises unto the Lord; yea, the brother of Jared did sing praises unto the Lord, and he did thank and praise the Lord all the day long; and when the night came, they did not cease to praise the Lord.

10 And thus they were driven forth; and no monster of the sea could break them, neither whale that could mar them; and they did have light continually, whether it was above the water or under the water.

11 And thus they were driven forth, three hundred and forty and four days upon the water.

"They felt joy and thanksgiving even in the midst of their afflictions. They had not yet arrived in the promised land, yet they were rejoicing in the promised blessing because of their consistent and resilient trust in Him.

The Jaredites were driven forth upon the water 344 days. Can you imagine that? Trusting in the Lord includes trusting in His timing and requires patience and endurance that outlast the storms of life."

Elder L. Todd Budge Of the Seventy, October 2019

"The children of God have always been commanded to give thanks. There are examples throughout the Old and New Testaments. The Apostle Paul wrote, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thes. 5:18). The prophet Alma taught, “When thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God” (Alma 37:37). And in modern revelation the Lord declared that “he who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto him, even an hundred fold” (D&C 78:19)."

Ether 6:5 And it came to pass that the Lord God caused that there should be a furious wind blow upon the face of the waters, towards the promised land; and thus they were tossed upon the waves of the sea before the wind.

6 And it came to pass that they were many times buried in the depths of the sea, because of the mountain waves which broke upon them, and also the great and terrible tempests which were caused by the fierceness of the wind.

8 And it came to pass that the wind did never cease to blow towards the promised land while they were upon the waters; and thus they were driven forth before the wind.

“I do not know why we have the many trials that we have, but it is my personal feeling that the reward is so great, so eternal and everlasting, so joyful and beyond our understanding that in that day of reward, we may feel to say to our merciful, loving Father, “Was that all that was required?”...[I]f we could daily remember and recognize the depth of that love our Heavenly Father and our Savior have for us, we would be willing to do anything to be back in Their presence again, surrounded by Their love eternally. What will it matter...what we suffered here if, in the end, those trials are the very things which qualify us for eternal life and exaltation in the kingdom of God with our Father and Savior?”

It's Sunday evening and we've been traveling all day. The Dallas Fort Worth DWF airport is about as big as I've seen. It has five terminals, ABCD and E that are separate but connected with electric shuttle trains. I counted three full size control towers that appeared to be about at least a mile apart. Huge. Then we got to Tampa and it is also huge. We had to take one train to get to the exit and another to get to the car rental area. Two of the biggest airports I've ever seen. And we'll see them again on Tuesday as we go home. Our hotel seems fine as well. We have to be at the hospital tomorrow morning by 0700. Then when Cathy is done, we get the rest of the day off. Our rental car is an Audi and it's very nice.

Ether 4:12 And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good; he that will not believe my words will not believe me—that I am; and he that will not believe me will not believe the Father who sent me. For behold, I am the Father, I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world.

"Our mortal brains are made to seek understanding and meaning in tidy bundles. I don’t know all the reasons why the veil over mortality is so thick. This is not the stage in our eternal development where we have all answers. It is the stage where we develop our assurance (or sometimes our hope) in the evidence of things not seen. Assurance comes in ways that aren’t always easy to analyze, but there is light in our darkness. Jesus said, “I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world.” For those seeking truth, it may seem at first to be the foolish claustrophobia of windows made of stone. But with patience and faithful questions, Jesus can transform our windows of stone to glass and light. Christ is light to see."

In me shall all mankind have life, and that eternally, even they who shall believe on my name; and they shall become my sons and my daughters. 15 And never have I showed myself unto man whom I have created, for never has man believed in me as thou hast.

“Seest thou that ye are created after mine own image? Yea, even all men were created in the beginning after mine own image.

16 Behold, this body, which ye now behold, is the body of my spirit; and man have I created after the body of my spirit; and even as I appear unto thee to be in the spirit will I appear unto my people in the flesh.”

"He was chosen and foreordained in the Grand Council in Heaven, even before the world was formed. Furthermore, being born of a mortal mother, He inherited the physical death, but from God, as the Only Begotten Son of the Father, He inherited the power to lay down His own life and then to take it up again. Additionally, Christ lived a perfect life that was without blemish and, therefore, was exempt from the demands of divine justice."

Elder Ulisses Soares Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, April 2021

I think that what Elder Soares is saying is not so much that Christ was "exempt" from the demands of divine justice but that his way of living caused divine justice, though always present, to not adversely affect him.

From the ScripturePlus app we read:

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland wrote,

“Part of the reason we are so misunderstood by others in the Christian tradition is because in stressing the individual personages of the Godhead, we have not followed that up often enough by both conceding and insisting upon Their unity in virtually every other imaginable way. For this we have reaped needless criticism, and we have made our LDS position harder to be understood than it needs to be.” (Ensign, January 2016).

So maybe in addition to remembering that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are distinct personages we can more fully recognize their unity. When Jesus Christ visited his followers in the western hemisphere he taught, “the Father, and I, and the Holy Ghost are one.” (3 Nephi 11:36). As Christ later knelt in prayer with these believers he said, “Father, I pray unto thee for them, and also for all those who shall believe on their words, that they may believe in me, that I may be in them as thou, Father, art in me, that we may be one” (3 Nephi 19:23).

There’s something powerful here. Christ wants us to be unified with him and our Heavenly Father in the same way that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are unified. Maybe as we learn more about how Heavenly Father is in Christ and Christ is in Heavenly Father, the Holy Spirit will whisper to our hearts how we can invite Christ to be in us in the same way that the Father is in him.

Jesus said that he always did his Father’s will. This is one key way he is one with the Father.  Jesus taught, “The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.” (John 5:19). We can be one with God when we choose to do what he would do.

When Jesus Christ prayed just before entering Gethsemane he prayed for those who believe in him, saying, “[I pray] that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us…that they may be one, even as we are one” (John 17:21–22). I hope that we will come to better understand that unity of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and that we will become one with them.

I'm remembering that when I have had bad cold in the past I've actually had mild repercussions for days afterwards. I have a significant runny nose and cough now that seem pretty persistent. Cathy has a sore throat and other symptoms of a child but no cough or runny nose for now. So we're going through some difficulties right now. We both think our trip to Florida this Sunday will be fine but could be better. We'll see. Cathy didn't want to do a walk yesterday so I went to the Orem fitness center and got my steps in. I'll probably do that again today.

I went to Chick-Fil-A in Orem and got breakfast and brought it home. Lunch is still up in the air so we'll see how that goes. Canceling tomorrow's temple appointment. So quiet time, recovery time for now.

Come Follow Me

Ether 3:4 And I know, O Lord, that thou hast all power, and can do whatsoever thou wilt for the benefit of man; therefore touch these stones, O Lord, with thy finger, and prepare them that they may shine forth in darkness; and they shall shine forth unto us in the vessels which we have prepared, that we may have light while we shall cross the sea.

5 Behold, O Lord, thou canst do this. We know that thou art able to show forth great power, which looks small unto the understanding of men.

"The Lord made it clear that ultimately the Jaredites could not make it to the promised land without Him. They were not in control, and the only way they could make it across the great deep was to put their trust in Him. These experiences and tutoring from the Lord seemed to deepen the brother of Jared’s faith and strengthen his trust in the Lord.

Notice how his prayers changed from questions and concerns to expressions of faith and trust:

“I know, O Lord, that thou hast all power, and can do whatsoever thou wilt for the benefit of man; …

“Behold, O Lord, thou canst do this. We know that thou art able to show forth great power, which looks small unto the understanding of men.”

Should be a quiet day today. Nothing planned and Cathy slept very poorly last night... Less than 4 hours. I didn't do much better with 5 hours and 19 minutes but I feel pretty good this morning. Might get a nap in later but I have some things I need to do. There is some training for my missionary status that the Church wants me to complete and I am supposed to do something about getting computer access at the Bishops Storehouse for my managerial duties. I've been putting these off but hopefully I can get these addressed today. We'll see.

Come Follow Me

Ether 3:1 And it came to pass that the brother of Jared, (now the number of the vessels which had been prepared was eight) went forth unto the mount, which they called the mount Shelem, because of its exceeding height, and did molten out of a rock sixteen small stones; and they were white and clear, even as transparent glass; and he did carry them in his hands upon the top of the mount, and cried again unto the Lord, saying:

4 And I know, O Lord, that thou hast all power, and can do whatsoever thou wilt for the benefit of man; therefore touch these stones, O Lord, with thy finger, and prepare them that they may shine forth in darkness; and they shall shine forth unto us in the vessels which we have prepared, that we may have light while we shall cross the sea.

"The brother of Jared’s answer to this question required diligent effort on his part: He climbed Mount Shelem “and did molten out of a rock sixteen small stones.” He then asked the Lord to touch those stones so that they would bring forth light.

...[W]e must remember that “it is not meet that [the Lord] should command in all things.” Like the brother of Jared, we must carefully consider...make a plan...and then take our plan to the Lord in prayer. This will require faith and effort on our part, but He will help us as we seek His assistance and do His will."

Cathy had lunch with her friend, Victoria, who lives up north of SLC. She came down to Lehi and met Cathy at Zoa's. They enjoyed a nice visit then Cathy and I walked at Rock Canyon Park again. The weather was beautiful. Then we stopped in to see Beth and Karen on our way home. A good day.

I spent some time trying to learn how to run our Ecobee thermostat and I'm pretty close to getting it. I'm going to meet with Craig on Thursday and get his advice on fine tuning. Our home being basically one story and relatively small doesn't need all the complications that are available from Ecobee. That's all well and good but I just want to make sure I'm taking advantage of the automation, etc. that is available.

This is Blake, who, like so many other cancer sufferers, has lost his hair due to treatment. His friends, like many before them, showed their love and support by shaving their heads.

Come Follow Me

Ether 2: 24 For behold, ye shall be as a whale in the midst of the sea; for the mountain waves shall dash upon you. Nevertheless, I will bring you up again out of the depths of the sea; for the winds have gone forth out of my mouth, and also the rains and the floods have I sent forth.

"The Lord’s guidance and instruction are essential. He helped the faithful brother of Jared by solving one of his two challenges when He told him how to get fresh air into the barges that had been faithfully built. But, pointedly, the Lord...made it clear that He...would allow the buffetings and trials...He it would be who would send forth the winds, the rains, and the floods.

Why would He do that? And why does He warn any of us to remove ourselves from a source of danger when He could simply stop the danger from happening?...

...here is the point—rather than solve the problem Himself, the Lord wants us to develop the faith that will help us rely upon Him in solving our problems and trust Him. Then we can feel His love more constantly, more powerfully, more clearly, and more personally. We become united with Him, and we can become like Him."

Elder Terence M. Vinson Of the Seventy, October 2013

Then there is this from Sister Eubank:

"Let me quote a little of what President Kimball said:

“Finally, my dear sisters, may I suggest to you something that has not been said before or at least in quite this way. Much of the major growth that is coming to the Church in the last days will come because many of the good women of the world … will be drawn to the Church in large numbers. This will happen to the degree that the women of the Church reflect righteousness and articulateness in their lives and to the degree that the women of the Church are seen as distinct and different—in happy ways—from the women of the world.

“Among the real heroines in the world who will come into the Church are women who are more concerned with being righteous than with being selfish. These real heroines have true humility, which places a higher value on integrity than on visibility. …

“… It will be … female exemplars of the Church [who] will be a significant force in both the numerical and the spiritual growth of the Church in the last days.”

What a prophetic statement that is."

I'm still recovering from my cold so I didn't go to choir practice or church. Just a quiet day at home but we went for a walk at Rock Canyon Park later in the afternoon. It was a beautiful day. A little cool but very nice. Today looks like a repeat. Nothing for me on the calendar so exercise and study. I'm still trying to figure out our new Ecobee thermostat so I'll work on that today.

Come Follow Me

Ether 2:14 And it came to pass at the end of four years that the Lord came again unto the brother of Jared, and stood in a cloud and talked with him. And for the space of three hours did the Lord talk with the brother of Jared, and chastened him because he remembered not to call upon the name of the Lord.

15 And the brother of Jared repented of the evil which he had done, and did call upon the name of the Lord for his brethren who were with him. And the Lord said unto him: I will forgive thee and thy brethren of their sins; but thou shalt not sin any more, for ye shall remember that my Spirit will not always strive with man; wherefore, if ye will sin until ye are fully ripe ye shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord. And these are my thoughts upon the land which I shall give you for your inheritance; for it shall be a land choice above all other lands.

"Remember that if we resist correction, others may discontinue offering it altogether, despite their love for us. If we repeatedly fail to act on the chastening of a loving God, then He too will desist. He has said, “My Spirit will not always strive with man."

Jake and Meredith came over with their whole family on their way to Hogle Zoo and moved all of our heavy furniture back into place after the carpets, which we had cleaned on Friday afternoon, dried.  That was very helpful and we had a nice visit.

Cathy is still suffering from being overly sleepy and she had a nice nap in the afternoon. Hopefully the surgical procedure we are having in Florida next week will be helpful.

BYU played football at the U of U last night and I recorded it to watch this morning. It was a great finish if you like BYU. They came from behind and won with a field goal in the last 4 seconds of the came, 22-21. BYU remains undefeated with a 9-0 record. A lot of Utah fans are upset but it was a good finish in my opinion and a legit win for the Cougars.

Come Follow Me

Mormon 9:27 O then despise not, and wonder not, but hearken unto the words of the Lord, and ask the Father in the name of Jesus for what things soever ye shall stand in need. Doubt not, but be believing, and begin as in times of old, and come unto the Lord with all your heart, and work out your own salvation with fear and trembling before him.

28 Be wise in the days of your probation; strip yourselves of all uncleanness; ask not, that ye may consume it on your lusts, but ask with a firmness unshaken, that ye will yield to no temptation, but that ye will serve the true and living God.

"When Moroni called upon the people to believe in Christ and to repent, he urged them to come unto the Savior with all their hearts, stripping themselves from all uncleanness. Furthermore, Moroni invited them to ask God, with unbreakable determination, that they would not fall into temptation. Applying these principles in our lives requires more than a mere belief; it requires adjusting our minds and hearts to these divine principles. Such adjustment requires a daily and constant personal effort, in addition to reliance on the Savior, because our mortal inclinations will not disappear on their own. Fighting against temptation takes a lifetime of diligence and faithfulness. But please know that the Lord is ready to assist us in our personal efforts and promises remarkable blessings if we endure to the end."

Elder Ulisses Soares Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2020

"The Lord in His infinite wisdom has designed His Church to operate with a lay ministry. That means we have been charged to watch over one another and to serve one another. We are to love one another as our Father in Heaven and the Lord Jesus Christ love us. Our callings and circumstances change from time to time, providing us with different and unique opportunities to serve and to grow. Most of the leaders and teachers in the Church are anxiously engaged in fulfilling their responsibilities. Some are less effective than others—it is true; but almost always there is sincere effort to provide meaningful gospel service.

Occasionally we find some who become so energetic in their Church service that their lives become unbalanced. They start believing that the programs they administer are more important than the people they serve. They complicate their service with needless frills and embellishments that occupy too much time, cost too much money, and sap too much energy. They refuse to delegate or to allow others to grow in their respective responsibilities.

As a result of their focusing too much time and energy on their Church service, eternal family relationships can deteriorate. Employment performance can suffer. This is not healthy, spiritually or otherwise. While there may be times when our Church callings require more intense effort and unusual focus, we need to strive to keep things in proper balance."

We had the carpets cleaned yesterday and that is disruptive. Lots of furniture moved, etc. Plus we're going to am endowment session at the Saratoga Springs temple this morning at 0645.

When we get home, Jake will help us restore order then we have the rest of the day to recover.

Come Follow Me

Mormon 9:9 For do we not read that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing?

10 And now, if ye have imagined up unto yourselves a god who doth vary, and in whom there is shadow of changing, then have ye imagined up unto yourselves a god who is not a God of miracles.

11 But behold, I will show unto you a God of miracles, even the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and it is that same God who created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are.

"With Moroni of old, I believe in a God of miracles...Moroni proclaimed that Jesus Christ did many mighty miracles, that many mighty miracles were wrought by the hands of the Apostles, and that a God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever must be a God of miracles today...

Just as important as...“mighty miracles” are the smaller “private miracles” that teach each of us to have faith in the Lord. These come as we recognize and heed the promptings of the Spirit in our lives."

This might be a busy day. Cathy has scheduled a carpet cleaning company to come in today and lots of furniture needs to be moved. I can't lift more than 20 lbs. Still due to expound surgery recovery so she arranged for Jake to come over and help. We'll see. Jake is great at helping us but there's a lot of furniture.

I sort of like not having to lift heavy weights but I feel badly too. Getting old is something that takes getting used to. I do have physical therapy exercises that really help with keeping me in pretty good shape while not hurting my back but hanging back and letting others do the heavy lifting still sometimes makes me feel a little inadequate. Oh well.

Come Follow Me

Mormon 8: 36 And I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts; and there are none save a few only who do not lift themselves up in the pride of their hearts, unto the wearing of very fine apparel, unto envying, and strifes, and malice, and persecutions, and all manner of iniquities; and your churches, yea, even every one, have become polluted because of the pride of your hearts.

37 For behold, ye do love money, and your substance, and your fine apparel, and the adorning of your churches, more than ye love the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted.

"In the recent past President Kimball counseled that even homes, boats, credentials, titles, and other similar pursuits can be worshiped as idols when they entice us away from love and service to God.

The prophet Moroni, speaking of our day, warned about the love of money and substance and suggested that we would love them more than we “love the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted.”

If we are to be worthy Saints, we should minister to others and adhere to the Savior’s admonition to love God and our fellowmen."

Elder Quentin L. Cook Of the Seventy, October 2003

Elder Patrick Kearon Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

"Because of the redeeming life and mission of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we can—and should—be the most joyful people on earth!"

"Joyful reverence? “Is that a thing?” you may ask. Well, yes, it is! We deeply love, honour, and respect our God, and our reverence flows from a soul that rejoices in Christ’s abundant love, mercy, and salvation! This joyful reverence to the Lord should characterise our sacred sacrament meetings.

However, for many, reverence only means this: folding our arms tightly around our chests, bowing our heads, closing our eyes, and holding still—indefinitely! This might be a helpful way to teach energetic young children, but as we grow and learn, let us see that reverence is so much more than this. Is that how we would be if the Saviour were with us? No, for “in [His] presence is fulness of joy”!

Served in the temple yesterday. Same schedule I've had for several weeks now that gives me four veils to start then a tour through Initiatories then back to two more veils. The temple will be closed now through most of November then we're back after Thanksgiving. Hopefully a little change in my assigned duties but we'll see. Working in the temple is a privilege and honor no matter what the assignment so I'll gratefully do whatever I'm assigned.

Still trying to recover from a cold so I didn't do much yesterday afternoon. I have an appointment this morning with physical therapy but nothing after that. I need to take some time and install our new thermostat so maybe I can do that today.

I served, with Cathy, in the Bishops Storehouse yesterday. The weather is very cold and the heater for the Storehouse is not functioning. We took our electric radiator and one of our area heaters over there and that really helped.

Earlier we drove out to Park City and stopped at the Whole Foods grocery store out there. It is huge. I really don't know why we can't have good stores here in Utah County. Trader Joe's recently went into Orem and it is always very busy but that's about it. We have Smiths Food king and Walmart and Target but that's about it.

Mormon 8:31 Yea, it (the Book of Mormon) shall come in a day when there shall be great pollutions upon the face of the earth; there shall be murders, and robbing, and lying, and deceivings, and whoredoms, and all manner of abominations; when there shall be many who will say, Do this, or do that, and it mattereth not, for the Lord will uphold such at the last day. But wo unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity.

We all hear and read a great deal these days about our polluted physical environment—acid rain, smog, toxic wastes. But...there is another kind of pollution that is much more dangerous—the moral and spiritual.

Sadly, the effects of this great pollution are perhaps most evident in the mass media, films, television, and popular music...

"Although there are some uplifting exceptions, in most areas of the mass media there seems to be a declaration of war against almost everything the majority treasures most: the family, religion, and patriotism. Marriage is degraded, while premarital and extramarital relations are encouraged and glamorized. Profanity and the foulest of vulgar gutter language bombard the ears of all who listen...Human life itself is trivialized by the constant barrage of violence and killings. Remember that anything that is not good for children is rarely good for adults."

Elder Joe J. Christensen Of the Presidency of the Seventy, October 1993

That quote is over 30 years old and things have gotten worse. Fortunately we still have prophets, seers, revelators and other great leaders in the church. We need to follow them carefully.

It's election day today... a choice between a very dishonest and socialistic Democrat party and the Republicans. When you listen to our watch the commercials the democrats are lying very consistently and convincingly. The "main stream" media are going along with them and many Americans are being persuaded. The Democrat presidential candidate is Kamela Harris and history will eventually reveal her incredible dishonesty. The republican, Donald Trump, was president for four years from 2016-2020 and did a great job. Many of us feel that his defeat in 2020 for a second term was very suspect. Anyway he's back and hopefully will get his second term.

Another way to ask this question is: If you had a choice between 5 million dollars or eternal life with Heavenly Father, which would you choose? Do you have a testimony or not? Where will you be in fifty or a hundred years from now and beyond? Because you will  be somewhere.

It's Saturday morning and that means we are going together to the temple for our weekly 0630 Endowment Session. Starting next week we will go to Saratoga Springs because our temple will be closed for maintenance until after Thanksgiving. That's a good thing of course but soon the Lindon Temple will be done and then the new Lehi temple will be built and the Provo Rock Canyon Temple is already under construction. All of these are within a half hour drive for us.

We walked at the Orem FFC yesterday. Not sure what we'll do today but something I hope.

"Too many people consider repentance as punishment—something to be avoided except in the most serious circumstances. But this feeling of being penalized is engendered by Satan. He tries to block us from looking to Jesus Christ, who stands with open arms, hoping and willing to heal, forgive, cleanse, strengthen, purify, and sanctify us.

I had a great day serving in the Bishops Storehouse yesterday. Before that, Cathy and I walked at Fashion Place Mall. The weather is getting cooler and windier so we're less likely to walk outside these days. So it's one of the malls or the Orem Family Fitness Center.

I also slept for 6 hours and 44 minutes last night which is great for me lately. No sleeping pills either and I feel pretty good this morning.

Yesterday was Halloween and we went over to Jake's after working at the Storehouse. They had set up a table and chairs in front of their home with a portable fire pit and a roaring fire.they were greeting trick-or-treaters from this set up along with one of their neighbors. Pretty cool (actually warm) way to handle Halloween.

The news from Phoenix (about Blake) seems pretty grim. He reportedly has severe Leukemia, is hospitalized and is not reacting well to treatment. Kevin is understandably very worried. That, along with his divorce and related issues has made his life pretty miserable. We, too, are concerned and Cathy is also particularly worried for both Kevin and Blake.

Come Follow Me

Mormon 3:12 Behold, I had led them, notwithstanding their wickedness I had led them many times to battle, and had loved them, according to the love of God which was in me, with all my heart; and my soul had been poured out in prayer unto my God all the day long for them; nevertheless, it was without faith, because of the hardness of their hearts.

"We should all follow the gospel teachings to love our neighbor and avoid contention. Followers of Christ should be examples of civility. We should love all people, be good listeners, and show concern for their sincere beliefs.

"As followers of Christ we should live peacefully with others who do not share our values or accept the teachings upon which they are based.
