2023 October 31, Tuesday, Journal Entry

We enjoyed visiting the new Orem temple which is now open to the public. It will be dedicated soon and shortly after that dedication the Provo Temple will be completely rebuilt.

Erica, Jake and Meredith were serving as volunteer ushers.

It's a truly beautiful temple and seems to have A Cherry Hill theme. It's located in the Cherry Hill section of Orem near Jake and Meredith's home.

I have been invited to serve as the dressing room coordinator on my Wednesday morning shift at the Mt. Timpanogos temple for the next 6-8 months. I'm honored to have received that assignment even though it means I will have to be there and ready to go at 0445 every Wednesday.

Below is the text message from my coordinator at the temple:

Good evening brother Partridge, after prayerful consideration, I would like to extend the assignment of dressing room coordinator to you. Do you feel like you have the time and energy to take this assignment on for the next 6 to 8 months? I appreciate your calm, cool, collected demeanor. I  Hope that this additional assignment won’t be a burden to you? Please let me know. Best.

Today is Bishops Storehouse from 2 to 6. I have also now been asked to be a shift manager at the Storehouse on Tuesday afternoons. So I guess I can say I will be busy for the foreseeable future.

Hebrews 2: 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

"There is no physical pain, no spiritual wound, no anguish of soul or heartache, no infirmity or weakness you or I ever confront in mortality that the Savior did not experience first. In a moment of weakness we may cry out, “No one knows what it is like. No one understands.” But the Son of God perfectly knows and understands, for He has felt and borne our individual burdens. And because of His infinite and eternal sacrifice (see Alma 34:14), He has perfect empathy and can extend to us His arm of mercy. He can reach out, touch, succor, heal, and strengthen us to be more than we could ever be and help us to do that which we could never do relying only upon our own power. Indeed, His yoke is easy and His burden is light."  - Elder David A. Bednar

Jake and his beautiful family went to Moab for a few days and enjoyed hiking in the scenic beauty of southeastern Utah.

He was clean shaven yesterday when we joined them at their Sacrament meeting and both Cathy and I were impressed by how good he looks.

2023 October 30, Monday, Journal Entry

We went to Jake's Sacrament meeting yesterday (ours as well) to see Fredrick and Jill. It was their annual Primary Sacrament Meeting and we wanted to show our support.

The new Orem temple is now open for public viewing and Jake and Erica will be part of the staff today. Jake will be the lead usher on the first floor from 3 to 7 p.m. today. We would love to see the new temple so we will go today.

Our annual membership at the Orem Family Fitness Center needs to be renewed and now that it's getting too cold to walk outside we'd better do that today.

"May we recommit to seek after this Jesus, of whom the prophets have testified. May we yoke ourselves to Him, draw liberally upon the matchless power of His Atonement, and rise up as sons and daughters of God and shake off the world. To “those who will have him to be their God” (1 Ne. 17:40), the Lord has extended a magnificent promise: “I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up” (D&C 84:88). Jesus Christ is our only chance. 2023 October 29, Sunday, Journal Entry

Bishops Storehouse was nicely busy all morning. No major rush times. Just busy consistently from 9 to noon.

Today we are going to Jake's ward to see our grandkids in their Primary Sacrament meeting annual presentation. Should, after that, be a nice quiet day.

Come Follow Me

Titus 3:3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

"Let me suggest that you and I must be praying, yearning, striving, and working to cultivate a Christlike character if we hope to receive the spiritual gift of charity—the pure love of Christ.

Jesus is the Christ, the Only Begotten Son of the Eternal Father. I know that He lives. And I testify that His character made possible for us the opportunities for both immortality and eternal life. May we reach outward when the natural tendency for us is to turn inward.

We spent most of yesterday putting the house back together after having all the wall to wall carpets cleaned late Thursday. The result is almost everything is super clean and a few nice things have been added. I was able to clean up the electrical outlets that we use so much. Combine and eliminate chords, etc.

I also spent a wonderful, stress free night sleeping on our new mattress. I think I got close to eight hours of sleep and I feel great (so far).

My weight this morning was 231 which is the lowest it's been in years. Just eating better and exercising more. I also have a goal of 7500 steps per day, four days a week. That helps. I also was able to take a lot of my 3XL and 2XL clothes to Deseret Industries for donation to other large dudes. I bought a pair of 38 waist Wrangler jeans at Walmart the other day for $21. They fit great.

Looking forward to serving in the Bishops Storehouse this morning.

The Scripture of the Day in the We Believe app is:

Titus 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

As disciples of Jesus Christ and as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints we are peculiar in a very positive way.

In the ScripturesPlus app, today's scripture is:

Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

I am not feeling any need to clarify further. These were valuable teachings Paul's day and they are just as valuable in our day.

Paul is reaching the end of His mortal life on earth and is trying to keep the Church on the right track. He knows there will be an apostacy but he is doing all he can to work with individual members and others to increase faith in the correct teachings.

2023 October 27, Friday, Journal Entry

Yesterday was busy. We got the new mattress and our carpets cleaned. Both look good. We couldn't really get into our bedroom until after 9 p.m. because the carpets were still drying.

My lovely sister, Beth, fixed us a nice dinner and had us over. Great visit and a game. She really helped us pass the time while our carpets dried.

Got a lot of work ahead today to get the house back in order.

Come Follow Me

1 Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

"The scriptures hold the keys to spiritual protection. They contain the doctrine and laws and ordinances that will bring each child of God to a testimony of Jesus Christ as the Savior and Redeemer.... They teach us where to go and what to do. They offer hope and knowledge.

Years ago, Elder S. Dilworth Young of the Seventy taught me a lesson about reading the scriptures. A stake was struggling with tensions and difficulties among the members, and counsel needed to be given.

I asked President Young, “What should I say?”

He answered simply, “Tell them to read the scriptures.”

I asked, “Which scriptures?”

He said, “It really doesn’t matter. Tell them to open up the Book of Mormon, for instance, and begin to read. Soon the feeling of peace and inspiration will come, and a solution will present itself.”

Make scripture reading a part of your regular routine, and the blessings will follow. There is in the scriptures a voice of warning, but there is also great nourishment.

President Boyd K. Packer

"Feasting on the words of Christ, as found in the scriptures, stimulates personal revelation. Elder Robert D. Hales said: “When we want to speak to God, we pray. And when we want Him to speak to us, we search the scriptures.”

"The promise of personal revelation through the Holy Ghost is awe-inspiring, much like an airplane in flight. And like airplane pilots, we need to understand the framework within which the Holy Ghost functions to provide personal revelation. When we operate within the framework, the Holy Ghost can unleash astonishing insight, direction, and comfort. Outside of that framework, no matter our brilliance or talent, we can be deceived and crash and burn."

2023 October 26, Thursday, Journal Entry

Big day today. Our new mattress gets delivered this morning. And we're getting our wall to wall carpets cleaned so I think I need to move a lot of furniture around. Plus it's getting near or below freezing outside so I need to get our hoses into the garage. That's all . I'll try to let you know in tomorrow's post how I did.

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

"Now, my dear brothers and sisters, it takes both faith and courage to let God prevail. It takes persistent, rigorous spiritual work to repent and to put off the natural man through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. It takes consistent, daily effort to develop personal habits to study the gospel, to learn more about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and to seek and respond to personal revelation.

During these perilous times of which the Apostle Paul prophesied, Satan is no longer even trying to hide his attacks on God’s plan. Emboldened evil abounds. Therefore, the only way to survive spiritually is to be determined to let God prevail in our lives, to learn to hear His voice, and to use our energy to help gather Israel."

2023 October 25, Journal Entry

As I served yesterday in the Bishops Storehouse I was struck again by the thought of how important it is to provide food for our brothers and sisters here in the world. They are so grateful and understandably so. If your worries about food for you and your loved ones are eased you can be free to work on other adopters of your life. It is a great blessing to me to be a part of that.

This morning I get to serve in the temple as an Ordinance Worker. So I don't have much time before I have to be there (6:15 a,m,)

Come Follow Me

1 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

"Courage is the word we need to hear and hold near our hearts—courage to turn our backs on temptation, courage to lift up our voices in testimony to all whom we meet, remembering that everyone must have an opportunity to hear the message. It is not an easy thing for most to do this. But we can come to believe in the words of Paul to Timothy...

I pray that we will have the courage to extend the hand of fellowship, the tenacity to try and try again, and the humility needed to seek guidance from our Father as we fulfill our mandate to share the gospel. The responsibility is upon us...".   President Thomas S. Monson

1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

2023 October 24, Journal Entry

Both of us have suffered from sleep deprivation lately and we believe that a new mattress will help. So yesterday we went to a store called RC Willy and bought a new mattress. Airloom. I laid down on one in the show room and I couldn't believe how comfortable it was. Unfortunately it was very expensive but we decided we could afford it so it arrives in two days.

Cathy's eye looked a lot better yesterday. As per Dr. Jardine's instruction, I took a photo of her eyes and emailed it to him. He also thought it looked good.

Beth and Karen invited us over to dinner last night. It was delicious and we played a couple of fun games afterward.

Today we serve at the Bishops Storehouse. Cathy feels that she can safely (because of her eye surgery) serve and is anxious to get back at it.

Come Follow Me

Paul, in prison and anticipating his own demise wrote to his young friend, Timothy:

1 Timothy  4:11 These things command and teach. 12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

"In 2 Timothy in the New Testament, the Apostle Paul is jailed in a dark, dreary dungeon awaiting execution for his belief in Jesus Christ and teaching His gospel. Pouring out his troubled soul and firm conviction, he pleads in a letter written to his dear young friend, Timothy, to be faithful to the truths that have been taught to him and to remember “the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.”  Paul had personally blessed and ordained Timothy and now urged him to be strong and not ashamed of his testimony of our Lord, come what may.

The Apostle Paul was fearless and never wavered in his testimony of Jesus... People of great faith know what is right and do it. They have uncompromised determination and commitment and are capable of enduring pressure or hardship."

Quiet day. I went to church. Cathy stayed home still recovering from eye surgery. We walked in the canyon again.

Church was ward conference which was pretty typical. The highlight was Brother Ryan Gottfredson of the High Council who taught the Elders Quorum lesson and did a great job. The topic was President Nelson's conference address, Think Celestial.

Come Follow Me

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

"Recently... two passages [of scripture] have stayed with me...The first is from the Sermon on the Mount: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” The second scripture is one which came to my mind as I pondered the meaning of the first. It is from the Apostle Paul’s Epistle to Timothy: “Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

I believe the second scripture explains, in great part, how we can accomplish the first. We become examples of the believers by living the gospel of Jesus Christ in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, and in purity. As we do so, our lights will shine for others to see.

Each of us came to earth having been given the Light of Christ. As we follow the example of the Savior and live as He lived and as He taught, that light will burn within us and will light the way for others."

2023 October 22, Journal Entry

I served in the Bishops Storehouse again yesterday. Saturdays are very busy there for the simple reasons that we are only open from 0900 to 12 00 and it's Saturday. For many it's just the only day they can come there.

I go there knowing it's going to be crowded and hectic but we are, after all, providing food and other necessary goods to people who truly are in need. There is very little that's more important than that. I met a family that has been in America for only two months. They came from Peru and spoke almost no English but we made it work and they were so appreciative.

Some of our young Missionaries have special needs that makes serving a full-time "normal" mission impossible but they want to serve and I really try to show them how much I appreciate their efforts and help. They stock the shelves by bringing goods from the warehouse area into the public area and they are very much needed.

Cathy is still recovering from her eye surgery and needed to not be in the hectic and busy atmosphere of the Storehouse but she really misses being there. She is planning on serving next Tuesday on our regular shift.

I went home and she made me a very nice lunch so I took her for a walk in the canyon and a drive in the country. We enjoy that. One of the blessings of owning A Toyota Prius is that we get about 58 miles per gallon of gas and that makes going for rides affordable even in these days of high gas prices.

I snapped this photo on today's walk in the canyon. It's still beautiful up there and that's the Provo River.

Patience: Great topic

"[W]ithout patience, we cannot please God; we cannot become perfect. Indeed, patience is a purifying process that refines understanding, deepens happiness, focuses action, and offers hope for peace….

[P]atience is not passive resignation, nor is it failing to act because of our fears. Patience means active waiting and enduring. It means staying with something and doing all that we can—working, hoping, and exercising faith; bearing hardship with fortitude, even when the desires of our hearts are delayed. Patience is not simply enduring; it is enduring well!"

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, "Continue in Patience", April 2010

Patience is something we, in these latter days, need to learn to develop more. We are so used to getting what we want quickly, no matter what it is, that we often lose patience at times when it is not helpful. That's why I love the above quote from Elder Uchtdorf.

Another day of recovery. We both are doing well. My black eye is almost gone and Cathy seems to be continuing to recover well from her eye surgery.

Among other things we decided to drive the beautiful Alpine Loop again. Most of the orange and red leaves have disappeared but as you can see, the aspen trees are still a beautiful yellow.

We stopped in to visit Beth and Karen. Karen had an impression that she should see a doctor about her broken foot and that turned out to be a good thing. Xrays showed her for was not healing properly so she is taking appropriate steps including using one of those "kneel on" cart and crutches in order to drastically reduce the weight she placed on her injured foot. It's interesting how she first, lost her job in the Bay Area, then decided to accept Beth's invitation to live with her for awhile, then had her accident where she broke her foot and it all leads to her being here for at least an extended period of time. From my perspective, Karen is a wonderful woman who is attractive, smart and dedicated to the Lord and still, as yet, unmarried. I truly believe that she is being guided from the other side of the Veil to what?... Unknown for now but stay tuned.

Then Cathy and I went to lunch at Thanksgiving Point. The weather was great and the outdoor patio dining was uplifting to say the least.

Then Cathy took a nap and I went for a neighborhood walk and finished my 7500 step a day goal. Since October 14th I have exceeded 7500 steps every day except one. So I'm a good boy in that regard anyway.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

"After a time the Church as established by the Lord fell into spiritual decay. His teachings were altered; His ordinances were changed. The Great Apostasy came as had been foretold by Paul, who knew that the Lord would not come again “except there come a falling away first.”…Thus a complete restoration was required. God the Father and Jesus Christ called upon the Prophet Joseph Smith to be the prophet of this dispensation. All divine powers of previous dispensations were to be restored through him.  This dispensation of the fulness of times would not be limited in time or in location. It would not end in apostasy, and it would fill the world." Elder Russell M. Nelson, October 2006

"Those who wholeheartedly turn their lives over to our Savior and serve God and fellowman discover a richness and fulness to life that the selfish or egotistic will never experience. The unselfish give of themselves. These may be small gifts of charity that have a grand impact for good: a smile, a handshake, a hug, time spent in listening, a soft word of encouragement, or a gesture of caring. All these acts of kindness can change hearts and lives. When we take advantage of the unlimited opportunities to love and serve our fellowmen, including our spouse and family, our capacity to love God and to serve others will greatly increase."

Another recovery day, especially for Cathy. Her eyes are better every day but she still has obvious signs of having had her eyes surgically repaired. We have cleared our calendar so that we can take it a day at a time. In the meantime my black eye and facial lacerations from my fall last Saturday are pretty much healed. I still have a little bruising under my left eye but that has gotten noticeably better every day.

I think we'll just get out and go for a drive and walk today. The weather is great. Not much else to report.

1 Thessalonians 5:15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

"Envy, arrogance, unrighteous dominion—these canker the soul of one who is guilty of them. It is true also if we fail to forgive. Even if it appears that another may be deserving of our resentment or hatred, none of us can afford to pay the price of resenting or hating, because of what it does to us. If we have felt the gnawing, mordant inroads of these emotions, we know the harm we suffer….Christ gave his life on a cross; and on that cross he fully, freely forgave. It is a worthy goal to seek to qualify for the friendship of such a one."

Yesterday was sort of a day of recovery for both of us. We both feel that our medical issues - Cathy's eye surgery and my black eye from my fall - are improving.

Neither of us is sleeping very well and we think we need a mattress better suited to us. Cathy selected our current mattress after extensive research including customer reviews and we've had it now for several years. To me it's just too firm. She has always preferred firmer mattresses. When we go on trips and sleep in hotels I have often slept better. Anyway, she is now on board with getting a new mattress that will be more comfortable. We may shop for one today or tomorrow.

Come Follow Me

I have to say that I'm getting a little tired of "studying" Paul's Epistles. There is no doubt that Paul, the Apostle, was a great servant of the Lord, but these letters seem to be a history of the problems he faced in trying to keep the Church of Jesus Christ on track during the early days following Christ's crucifixion. The useful part of them shows that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was the same then as it is now and the problems cropping up in the church then are somewhat similar to problems facing the church today. Useful but...

For example today's scripture from the Come Follow Me App is found in 1st Thessalonians 4:14 which reads:

"For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him."

Then we are given an explanation of what somebody believes that this scripture means and this explanation corresponds well with Gospel principles that we find in today's church.

In the ScripturePlus app today's scripture is 1st Thessalonians 5:18,

"In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

This is a good point but most of us already know we should be grateful.

I realize that this year's study is The New Testament but trying to make a years worth of study of the New Testament seems to be challenging at best. The parts about Jesus' life and teachings were absolutely interesting and useful but these letters by Paul...

For example, a quote from today is much easier to understand for those of us who live today:

"Those who believe that the grave is man’s final destiny live without hope of a better world and are inclined to embrace that fatalistic approach, “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die”…

Whereas, those who believe in a life after death are much more inclined to lead purposeful lives. Belief in a resurrection and related truths encourages one to obey the commandments, repent of sins, serve others, and do the other things that bring joy and happiness both here and hereafter."

Book of Mormon reading

Third Nephi, The Book of Nephi the Son of Nephi, Who Was the Son of Helaman. And Helaman was the son of Helaman, who was the son of Alma, who was the son of Alma, being a descendant of Nephi who was the son of Lehi, who came out of Jerusalem in the first year of the reign of Zedekiah, the king of Judah.

Chapter 1, Nephi, the son of Helaman, departs out of the land, and his son Nephi keeps the records—Though signs and wonders abound, the wicked plan to slay the righteous—The night of Christ’s birth arrives—The sign is given, and a new star arises—Lyings and deceivings increase, and the Gadianton robbers slaughter many. About A.D. 1–4.

Chapter 2, Wickedness and abominations increase among the people—The Nephites and Lamanites unite to defend themselves against the Gadianton robbers—Converted Lamanites become white and are called Nephites. About A.D. 5–16.

Mt. Timpanogos

I seem to recall that Timpanogos is a Ute Indian word meaning a reclining woman or squaw. If you look at it with that in mind, you can picture the head with a distinctive nose on the right and the feet on the left.

This photo was taken from southwest of the mountain. Viewing the mountain from the northwest might cause one to see the head at the north and feet at the south.

The top of Mt. Timpanogos is 11,752 ft. above sea level.

Cathy's eye surgery was a strabismus correction surgery and according to the doctor, Griffin Jardine, it went well. The procedure is supposed to help her eye muscles so that they focus both eyes on the same object or view. This is a condition that has caused her to not see very well but that can be corrected. The surgery she underwent yesterday might, and normally does, correct that. It's possible that one final followup procedure will be needed but even so she should be better off.
She comes from a family that normally lives well into their nineties and she is 73. So I'm hoping this procedure, or combination of procedures, will make her next twenty years a lot more enjoyable. I brought her home and will try to keep her comfortable as she recovers.

Our new tree was planted yesterday morning, ending, we hope, the dead tree controversy with the HOA. It's pretty innocuous right now but next spring and every spring thereafter it will stand out because it should have beautiful pink cherry blossoms whereas the trees planted by the developer are pear trees with white blossoms.

We drove up to Bridal Veil Falls yesterday for a quick two-mile walk.

Yesterday afternoon we went to the Bishops Storehouse to help with the annual, I  think, inventory. It was very well organized and we actually enjoyed being a part of the project. We were done in about ninty minutes.

I will play play pickleball in a little while with some of my elderly friends who don't always feel elderly.

Then it will be off to SLC where Cathy will undergo eye surgery. It will be done on an outpatient basis but it's a very serious procedure and will be done under general anesthesia. I'll try to provide more details tomorrow.

Helaman, The prophecy of Samuel, the Lamanite, to the Nephites. Comprising chapters 13 through 15.

Chapter 13, Samuel the Lamanite prophesies the destruction of the Nephites unless they repent—They and their riches are cursed—They reject and stone the prophets, are encircled about by demons, and seek for happiness in doing iniquity. About 6 B.C.

Chapter 14, Samuel predicts light during the night and a new star at Christ’s birth—Christ redeems men from temporal and spiritual death—The signs of His death include three days of darkness, the rending of the rocks, and great upheavals of nature. About 6 B.C.

14:1 And now it came to pass that Samuel, the Lamanite, did prophesy a great many more things which cannot be written.

Hmmm.

We are supposed to get our new tree in our front parking strip this morning. It will be a Pink Flair flowering cherry tree that will produce pink blossoms in the Spring time. Should be good.

Later today we are scheduled to help with inventory at the Bishops Storehouse. My face still has a ugly left eye but I feel completely normal. Should be no problem. If I wear my sunglasses I look almost normal 😀.

Tomorrow will be Cathy's eye surgical procedure which has us concerned. Hopefully the result will be result of her vision which is somewhat impaired. We'll find out today what time her surgery will be.

1 Thessalonisns 1:5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

"In response to a 14-year-old boy’s humble prayer, the heavens were opened. God the Eternal Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared and spoke to the Prophet Joseph Smith. The long-awaited restitution of all things had begun, and the principle of revelation was everlastingly established in our dispensation. Joseph’s message, and our message to the world, can be summarized in two words: “God speaks.” He spoke anciently, He spoke to Joseph, and He will speak to you."

Tripped and fell while walking in Provo Canyon.

What a klutz! No major damage. Just obvious lack of coordination.

We enjoyed serving at the Bishops Storehouse again yesterday morning, then lunch in Springville. We decided to take a walk in Provo Canyon and the colors are still very spectacular.

Colossians 3:14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

"In reviewing Paul’s previous description of charity, we learn that charity is not a single act or something we give away but a state of being, a state of the heart, kind feelings that engender loving actions…
When we have charity, we are willing to serve and help others when it is inconvenient and with no thought of recognition or reciprocation. We don’t wait to be assigned to help, because it becomes our very nature. As we choose to be kind, caring, generous, patient, accepting, forgiving, inclusive, and selfless, we discover we are abounding in charity."
Sister Silvia H. Allred, First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidenc, October 2011, Charity Never Faileth

“Real charity is not something you give away; it is something that you acquire and make a part of yourself. And when the virtue of charity becomes implanted in your heart, you are never the same again. It makes the thought of being [critical or verbally abusive] repulsive.

“Perhaps the greatest charity comes when we are kind to each other, when we don’t judge or categorize someone else, when we simply give each other the benefit of the doubt or remain quiet. Charity is accepting someone’s differences, weaknesses, and shortcomings; having patience with someone who has let us down; or resisting the impulse to become offended when someone doesn’t handle something the way we might have hoped. Charity is refusing to take advantage of another’s weakness and being willing to forgive someone who has hurt us. Charity is expecting the best of each other” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1992, 24; or Ensign, May 1992, 18–19).
Elder Marvin J. Ashton

Colossians 3:18-25
Instructions for Household Duties
18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger lest they be discouraged.
22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:
23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

We drove to Kamas for breakfast at the Mirror Lake Diner. It was good as always and expensive, also as usual. We decided to drive on to Coalville where some people who Cathy follows on social media are refurbishing a grocery store for a variety of reasons. Cute town but a long way from major civilization. But we did see another dinner called Oakley in a little wide spot on the highway also named Oakley. I think we'll try that soon.

Then we drove to The Food Nanny store in SLC and bought some Kamoot flour. Then home and Cathy made some amazing cookies, some of which we will take to the Bishops Storehouse today as a treat.

Then we invited Karen and Beth to come over for dinner and a game of 5 Crowns. Enjoyed the day.

Colossians 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

"As is evident in our family proclamation, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are blessed with unique doctrine and different ways of viewing the world. We participate and even excel in many worldly activities, but on some subjects we forgo participation as we seek to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Apostles, ancient and modern."

Elder Dallin H. Oaks Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2017

I am reminded of the great blessings we receive through temple worship where we are Washed and Annointed to hear the word of the Lord and see clearly and discern truth. This takes effort and desire on our part but what a great blessing in these days where we literally almost can't trust anything except our church leaders.

Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Comprising chapters 7 through 16.

Chapter 7, Nephi is rejected in the north and returns to Zarahemla—He prays upon his garden tower and then calls upon the people to repent or perish. About 23–21 B.C.

Chapter 8, Corrupt judges seek to incite the people against Nephi—Abraham, Moses, Zenos, Zenock, Ezias, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lehi, and Nephi all testified of Christ—By inspiration Nephi announces the murder of the chief judge. About 23–21 B.C.

2023 October 13, Journal Entry

The weather is starting to turn cold and we have accomplished some of the main things we have started. Yesterday was pretty quiet. I had eaten kind of poorly for a couple of days and my weight actually went to 235 yesterday morning. So I just made a point of not snacking or eating more than needed and I found I was back to 231 today so that made me feel good.

We decided to walk at the University Place Mall and Cathy talked me into getting some nice clothes that fit my new more slender look. As an example, six months ago my pants that were a 40" waist were getting kind of tight. And I had been wearing shirts and jackets that were 2X and 3X sizes. I am now into XL and XLT sizes and my waist is between 36 and 38. I feel better and look better.

Today should be pretty quiet. The weather, while still cool, will be sunny and that's nice.

ScripturePlus Scripture of the Day: Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

My Scripture of The Day: Colossians 4:1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

"We have the seed of the gospel word. It is up to each of us to set the priorities and to do the things that make our soil good and our harvest plentiful. We must seek to be firmly rooted and converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We achieve this conversion by praying, by scripture reading, by serving, and by regularly partaking of the sacrament to always have His Spirit to be with us. We must also seek that mighty change of heart that replaces evil desires and selfish concerns with the love of God and the desire to serve Him and His children."

Helaman Chapter 5 Nephi and Lehi devote themselves to preaching—Their names invite them to pattern their lives after their forebears—Christ redeems those who repent—Nephi and Lehi make many converts and are imprisoned, and fire encircles them—A cloud of darkness overshadows three hundred people—The earth shakes, and a voice commands men to repent—Nephi and Lehi converse with angels, and the multitude is encircled by fire. About 30 B.C.

Chapter 6, The righteous Lamanites preach to the wicked Nephites—Both peoples prosper during an era of peace and plenty—Lucifer, the author of sin, stirs up the hearts of the wicked and the Gadianton robbers in murder and wickedness—The robbers take over the Nephite government. About 29–23 B.C.

Helaman 5:2 For as their laws and their governments were established by the voice of the people, and they who chose evil were more numerous than they who chose good, therefore they were ripening for destruction, for the laws had become corrupted.

Helaman 6:21 But behold, Satan did stir up the hearts of the more part of the Nephites, insomuch that they did unite with those bands of robbers, and did enter into their covenants and their oaths, that they would protect and preserve one another in whatsoever difficult circumstances they should be placed, that they should not suffer for their murders, and their plunderings, and their stealings.

23 And thus they might murder, and plunder, and steal, and commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness, contrary to the laws of their country and also the laws of their God. 24 And whosoever of those who belonged to their band should reveal unto the world of their wickedness and their abominations, should be tried, not according to the laws of their country, but according to the laws of their wickedness, which had been given by Gadianton and Kishkumen.

I wrote a couple of things last night and put some photos in yesterday's entry. Can't think of anything new so I'll just add this photo I took while walking in the park yesterday evening with Cathy. You can still see the Fall colors and just a little snow right below the clouds. It was a beautiful but cool afternoon.

"Serving others should become a natural part of the life of every follower of our Savior. When we subordinate personal interests out of love and give of ourselves with no thought of receiving in return, we are moving toward becoming true disciples. “The Lord has … commanded his people to care for the poor and needy. He said, ‘And remember in all things the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted, for he that doeth not these things, the same is not my disciple.’"
Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, April 1992

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

"Of course, all of us will fall short of our divine potential, and there is some truth in the realization that alone we are not enough. But the good news of the gospel is that with the grace of God, we are enough. With Christ’s help, we can do all things...
The surprising truth is that our weaknesses can be a blessing when they humble us and turn us to Christ."

I had to be at the temple at 0500 so did not get anything done this morning. Yesterday I helped Cathy get the front garden decorated. It got stormy this morning and there was some wind problems. After I got home from the temple I was able to get everything back in shape and stronger.

I also was able to dig out the dead tree stump in the parking strip.

2023 October 10, Journal Entry

Yesterday morning, Monday, we were still sort of recovering from hosting Jake's family on Sunday. That's not intended to be negative in any way but fixing a nice dinner for eight people and then cleaning up afterward, though enjoyable, takes some effort.

So we took a drive across the Alpine Loop from Provo Canyon to American Fork Canyon. The photo on the left is the back of Mt. Timpanogos. Fall colors are still present and as beautiful as ever. Then we got some stuff at Sun River Gardens to decorate our newly finished (almost) front garden for the Autumn season which is now upon us.

I actually went to lunch with my friends from Wasatch Blue who are mostly retired cops or our good friends. We usually go to Marley's here in Lindon where they are noted for their Sliders. Not healthy, but very tasty.

Then Cathy and I spread the last six bags of our Soil Pep mulch (we went and got four more bags for today). Soil Pep mulch is bark mulch that is very finely ground up so that it is almost soil by itself. We hope that it will act as mulch, protecting our plants during harsh weather, while also contributing to the improvement of the soil.

We will work in the garden this morning then serve in the Bishops Storehouse this afternoon.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

"Seeking Christ in every thought and following Him with all our heart requires that we align our mind and desires with His...This course of action implies that we continually conduct our lives in harmony with the gospel of Christ and focus daily on everything that is good. Only then may we achieve “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding” and which will “keep [our] hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Elder Ulisses Soares, October 2020

"As you walk the covenant path, from baptism to the temple and throughout life, I promise you power to go against the natural worldly flow—power to learn, power to repent and be sanctified, and power to find hope, comfort, and even joy as you face life’s challenges. I promise you and your family protection against the influence of the adversary, especially when you make the temple a major focus in your life." Elder Dale G. Renlund, April 2023

Doctrine & Covenants 109:22 And we ask thee, Holy Father, that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power, and that thy name may be upon them, and thy glory be round about them, and thine angels have charge over them;

Today, Israel has been attacked and considers itself to be at war. The U.S. House of Representatives is without a leader for the first time in the history of our country. Our government is floundering and our country is divided like never before. Yet I'm strangely at peace because of my testimony of God, His Son, Jesus Christ and our church. I am trying to always stand in Holy Places wherever I go and to always remember my Savior.

The Book of Helaman

An account of the Nephites. Their wars and contentions, and their dissensions. And also the prophecies of many holy prophets, before the coming of Christ, according to the records of Helaman, who was the son of Helaman, and also according to the records of his sons, even down to the coming of Christ. And also many of the Lamanites are converted. An account of their conversion. Philippians 1:29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

"We should always remember the price Joseph and Hyrum Smith paid, along with so many other faithful men, women, and children, to establish the Church." President M. Russell Ballard, April 2020

Many have suffered in this life for their beliefs and actions as followers of Jesus Christ. I sometimes worry that I have not suffered enough or really at all for my beliefs. I truly believe that I have only been richly blessed and guided because of my belief in God and Jesus Christ. I may yet have to suffer and, if so,  my desire is to be strong in my faith and actions. I hope it doesn't come to that.

2023 October 8, Journal Entry

We served in the Bishops Storehouse yesterday morning and I enjoyed it a lot. Mostly the best people are there usually serving in some way and it's very rewarding to be helping with that. There are many people, usually sisters, who come to get food orders filled for those who can't do it for themselves. These are true angels and I see them there almost every time I'm there. Anyway, serving there has been very good for my spiritual growth.

Then we came home and I spent the afternoon working in the garden, spreading mulch and putting the stone pathway back together. Starting to look good. I'm about half done now and hope to finish up on Monday.

It's Fast Sunday today and we're trying to start a tradition of having Jake and his family over for dinner after church. We want it to be nice for them and we always enjoy having family over.

Come Follow Me

Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

"Each member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has an individual responsibility to learn and live the Lord’s teachings and to receive by proper authority the ordinances of salvation and exaltation. We should not expect the Church as an organization to teach or tell us everything we need to know and do to become devoted disciples and endure valiantly to the end. Rather, our personal responsibility is to learn what we should learn, to live as we know we should live, and to become who the Master would have us become. And our homes are the ultimate setting for learning, living, and becoming.

Blessings will come as we strive to fulfill our individual responsibility to learn and love the restored gospel of Jesus Christ." Elder David A. Bednar, April 2019

It has been reported that the nation of Israel has been recently attacked by a Palestinian terrorist organization known as Hamas and considers itself to be at war. There have been several hundred fatalities and several nations have openly supported the destruction of Israel.

Things are getting worse in the world. We need to be standing in Holy Places at all times.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Although Paul's writings may be interpreted as anticipating the great apostacy and therefor the destruction of the Church of Jesus Christ in those days of yore, there are those, including me, who believe that these writings can also apply to the latter days. Today.

2023 October 7, Front Garden half done.

I basically finished the west side of our front yard garden today. We like it a lot better than it was when we moved in. I'll hopefully finish the east end on Monday.

2023 October 7, Journal Entry

I have been struggling with our automated irrigation system in the front garden. The hose, that can be seen in the photo, winds through the garden with smaller tubes, that you can't see,  branching out to the various plants to provide them with water. To shorten a potentially long and boring story, most of what I was trying to do resulted in leaks and insufficient water to some plants.
I was on my way to the hardware store to get new rubbing when I spotted a truck that belongs to our neighborhood landscaping maintenance company. The words "Irrigation and Sprinkler Systems" were painted on the tail gate of the truck.
I stopped and talked to the man who was working on a sprinkling system near our home and, bottom line, he came over and completely repaired and reworked our irrigation system. For no charge. (I gave him a few bucks so he could have a nice dinner or whatever)

So later today, after we serve in the Bishops Storehouse, I'm hoping to put down mulch and get our stone path back in place.

The tree that is located in the parking strip in front of the house is dead and our HOA (Home Owners Association) has insisted it be replaced at our expense.
I clipped all the branches of and put them in our trash so all that is left now is a stump. Jake has agreed to come over on Monday and help me pull out the stump so our new tree, which will be delivered soon, can be planted there.

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Notice that the way that husbands are to love their wives is spelled out to be "as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it". It's been my experience that among other blessings, wives who are loved like this return that love many times over. Makes for a celestial marriage.

"Happiness at home is most likely to be achieved when practices there are founded upon the teachings of Jesus Christ...
The home is the great laboratory of love. There the raw chemicals of selfishness and greed are melded in the crucible of cooperation to yield compassionate concern and love one for another...
Thank the Lord for these [family members] who—like our Heavenly Father—love us not only for what we are but for what we may become."
Elder Russell M. Nelson, April 1999, "Our Sacred Duty to Honor Women"

"Charity is the antidote to contention. Charity is the spiritual gift that helps us to cast off the natural man, who is selfish, defensive, prideful, and jealous. Charity is the principal characteristic of a true follower of Jesus Christ. Charity defines a peacemaker.

When we humble ourselves before God and pray with all the energy of our hearts, God will grant us charity.

Those blessed with this supernal gift are long-suffering and kind. They do not envy others and are not caught up in their own importance. They are not easily provoked and do not think evil of others.

Brothers and sisters, the pure love of Christ is the answer to the contention that ails us today. Charity propels us “to bear one another’s burdens” rather than heap burdens upon each other. The pure love of Christ allows us “to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things”—especially in tense situations. Charity allows us to demonstrate how men and women of Christ speak and act—especially when under fire."
President Russell M. Nelson, April 2023, "Peacemakers Needed"

I played pickleball with four of my friends yesterday morning. Then I worked on and completed our HOA request for approval to replace the dead tree in our parking strip that the HOA has required us to replace. It's interesting that the tree, which was there when we moved in and which died shortly thereafter, became the object of an HOA direction that we had to remove it and replace it. Then the HOA required us to get their approval to accomplish that task. Bureaucracy at its finest.

Then we went to an afternoon endowment session at the temple. Somewhere we squeezed in a visit with Beth and Karen. Karen is staying with Beth until she can find a new job.

Today I am going to try to finish up my work on our front garden irrigation system. The weather is absolutely beautiful so that should actually be enjoyable.

Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

It is extremely imperative that we listen to and study the words of our modern prophets, seers and revelators, the First Presidency and members of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. In these times there are few others whose words we can trust and rely on. I don't automatically believe news "journalists", commentators, politicians and the list goes on and on. But I do trust our church leaders.

Also in Ephesians 4:

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Served in the temple and enjoyed it very much as usual. I serve with wonderful people and serve patrons who are obviously trying to do the right thing - some even are trying to do a Celestial Thing as suggested by President Russell M. Nelson in his general conference address last Sunday. Anyway, the temple is a great place to be.

Cathy want feeling well yesterday so I spent my day trying to get our tree replacement application prepared. The HOA has dictated that we, at our expense, must replace the dead tree that is in the parking strip in front of our house. Then, they dictated that we must apply for approval to replace the tree. At fittest it seemed irritating but now I'm looking at it as a lesson in patience and understanding. I'm just trying to be a good boy.

Ephesians 4: 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

"From the beginning, God has sought to gather and organize His children “to bring to pass [our] immortality and eternal life.” With that purpose in mind, He has instructed us to build places of worship where we receive knowledge and the ordinances of salvation and exaltation; make and keep covenants that bind us to Jesus Christ; are endowed with “the power of godliness”; and gather together often to remember Jesus and strengthen each other in Him.”

As I study the Epistles of Paul lately one theme stands out. The difficulty of maintain unity with people from throughout his known world. It is dawning on me that the problems Paul faced with unity are almost miniscule when compared to the challenges we, as a church, face today in unifying basically the entire world.

An example: In Kentucky I served as Executive Secretary in a Crestwood ward where the Bishop was Eric Bednar. His father is Elder David A. Bednar the Apostle. Elder Bednar came to one of our Ward council meetings and, of course, spent some time answering questions. At the time, there were four units meeting in our building because of temporary repairs being made in another chapel in our stake. Our High Priest Group Leader, Tom Posey (a truly good man), asked about getting another chapel built in our area. Elder Bednar had recently returned from a visit to Africa where about 100 new wards had been created during hisvisit. He pointed out that the Church was, in a sense, struggling to build chapels throughout the world and that the need for a new chapel in the Louisville, Kentucky area, while maybe needed, might probably be lower in priority than in other areas of the world.

So, while basic Gospel principles and teachings are pretty much universal, when we think about church policies and procedures we need to remember that ours is now a truly world-wide church and think about how these policies and procedures will affect members in, say, Mongolia and India for example. Unity can be a struggle.

Chapter 54, Ammoron and Moroni negotiate for the exchange of prisoners—Moroni demands that the Lamanites withdraw and cease their murderous attacks—Ammoron demands that the Nephites lay down their arms and become subject to the Lamanites. About 63 B.C.

We had hoped that the Bishops Storehouse renovation would have been completed by the time we started our afternoon shift yesterday but, alas, not so. We filled orders by going directly to items which were still mostly in boxes in the warehouse. So it was challenging in many ways. One thing I learned was how patient and loving the people are who we serve with. It's also very nice to see the many people who come to the Storehouse to help someone else. And, not least, the people who are in need who are so grateful for what we provide for them. We worked a little harder than usual and stayed later than usual but the work is so satisfying.

Ephesians 3: 16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

"The more I come to know my Heavenly Father, the more I see how He inspires and leads His children. He is not angry, vengeful, or retaliatory. His very purpose—His work and His glory—is to mentor us, exalt us, and lead us to His fulness.

God described Himself to Moses as “merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.”

Our Father in Heaven’s love for us, His children, surpasses by far our ability to comprehend."

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, April 2017
