Vitals: Wt. 226.6

Journal Entry

Easter Sunday. Cathy is still too hurting to go to church and I will stay home with her. We have nothing planned for today other than just being home together. The weather is terrible... 37 degrees and wintry mix meaning a cold, freezing mixture of rain and snow. If the weather clears up and it warms up a little I might go for a walk here in our neighborhood.

The Bishops Storehouse was moderately busy yesterday.

Come Follow Me

3 Nephi 11:14 Arise and come forth unto me, that ye may thrust your hands into my side, and also that ye may feel the prints of the nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am the God of Israel, and the God of the whole earth, and have been slain for the sins of the world.

15 And it came to pass that the multitude went forth, and thrust their hands into his side, and did feel the prints of the nails in his hands and in his feet; and this they did do, going forth one by one until they had all gone forth, and did see with their eyes and did feel with their hands, and did know of a surety and did bear record, that it was he, of whom it was written by the prophets, that should come.

"He invites each of us to come, one by one, to Him, that we too may know that He is “the God of … the whole earth, and [has] been slain for the sins of the world.” We learn how it feels to be encircled in His love when we accept that invitation.

"I’m certain that each of you has felt, at one time or another, encircled in Christ’s arms. But if you are like me, there are times when you are fearful, when the stress and busyness of life seem to overwhelm you, when you feel adrift from the Spirit. Perhaps you even feel as though you have been abandoned. When I encounter those feelings, the best antidote is my memory of the moments when Christ’s peace has come to strengthen me. So tonight I invite you to remember with me what it is to feel the Lord’s love in your life and to feel encircled in His arms."

I substituted for Dennis Gauger at the temple yesterday. The temple was busier than I had ever seen it, maybe because of Good Friday. Anyway, I was assigned five veils in a row and I believe I had about five patrons on each. It's important to remember that each Veil ceremony is a sacred ordinance and is hopefully very important for one of my brothers or sisters on the other side.

Then I hurried home and we picked up Erica and took her to her violin lesson. She is pretty impressive and takes lessons on the piano and organ as well as the violin. I think she's a very special young woman and it will be interesting to see where she goes and what she does in her future. Her mom and dad had gone to Manti to see that temple open house.

Come Follow Me

In his vision of the tree of life, Nephi saw that “the great and spacious building was the pride of the world; and it fell, and the fall thereof was exceedingly great.” And then the angel of the Lord told him, “Thus shall be the destruction of all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, that shall fight against the twelve apostles of the Lamb” (1 Nephi 11:36).

3 Nephi 11:8 And it came to pass, as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; and behold, they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared unto them.

9 And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying:

10 Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.

11 And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning.

"He is the life of the world because He is our Creator and because, through His Resurrection, we are all assured that we will live again. And the life He gives us is not merely mortal life…

He…is the light because His teachings light our path in mortal life and show us the way back to the Father."

Elder Dallin H. Oaks Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2011

The Lord has warned us. In the last days, our decision to follow those He has called to lead His Church—when so many others reject them—will become a protection to us. What is our attitude toward the Apostles of the Lamb?

Yesterday I enjoyed playing pickleball with my friends at the stake center. Then Cathy wanted to go back to the Apple store to ask a question or two. Then we walked at that mall, Fashion Place, and came home.

Today I am substituting at the temple for Dennis Gauger then Cathy and I will pick up Erica and take her to her piano lesson while her parents are visiting the Manti Temple open house. Should be a great day.

Come Follow Me

3 Nephi 9:13 O all ye that are spared because ye were more righteous than they, will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you?

"Thanks to Him, wounded souls may be healed and broken hearts may be mended. There is no burden that He cannot ease or remove. He knows about our infirmities and sicknesses. I promise and testify to you that when all doors seem to be closed, when everything else seems to fail, He will not fail you. Christ will help and is the way out, whether the struggle is with an addiction, depression, or something else. He knows “how to succor his people.” Marriages and families that are struggling for whatever reason—economic challenges, bad media influences, or family dynamics—will feel a calming influence from heaven. It is comforting to “feel and see” that He rose from the dead “with healing in his wings,” that because of Him, we will meet and embrace again those beloved ones who have passed away. Verily our conversion unto Him is rewarded with our healing."

Elder Walter F. González Of the Presidency of the Seventy, October 2012

Another great conference talk about this very important topic was given by Elder Patrick Kearon in the April 2022 General Conference. We'll worth watching or reading again.

Journal Entry

Yesterday was my weekly regular temple assignment where my first meeting is at 0445. I slept really well and didn't wake up until 0330, so I didn't have time for any Journal Entry or Come Follow Me study. So I'll just do my best to catch up today. Other than working in the temple in the morning I spent most of the day with Cathy which is a good thing. She was also well-rested and we enjoyed just spending time together. I was able to get my walking in. My weight yesterday morning was 227 so getting back down today was a good thing.

I finally got my Ozempic prescription filled so I stopped taking Rybelsus tablets and started my Ozempic injections. I think that will help me with my diabetes control.

"On the cross of Calvary, where Jesus died for our sins, He practiced what He taught…

Sincerely praying for those who may be considered our enemies demonstrates our belief that God can change our hearts and the hearts of others. Such prayers should strengthen our resolve to make whatever changes are necessary in our own lives, families, and communities."

President M. Russell Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2020

Luke 24:5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

"Our Savior lived again. The most glorious, comforting, and reassuring of all events of human history had taken place—the victory over death. The pain and agony of Gethsemane and Calvary had been wiped away. The salvation of mankind had been secured. The Fall of Adam had been reclaimed."

"The empty tomb that first Easter morning was the answer to Job’s question, “If a man die, shall he live again?”

President Thomas S. Monson, President of the Church, April 2010

John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

"Relating this question to ourselves in our day, the Lord may be asking us about how busy we are and about the many positive and negative influences competing for our attention and our time. He may be asking each of us if we love Him more than the things of this world. This may be a question about what we really value in life, who we follow, and how we view our relationships with family members and neighbors. Or maybe He is asking what really brings us joy and happiness.

Do the things of this world bring us the joy, happiness, and peace that the Savior offered to His disciples and that He offers to us? Only He can bring us true joy, happiness, and peace through our loving Him and following His teachings.

How would we answer the question “Lovest thou me more than these?”

Yesterday was Monday and Cathy was feeling pretty good. We went to breakfast then a drive winding up at Fashion Place Mall. We walked some and she found a nice dress that she wanted to get for our grand daughter, Erica. So we got that and took it to their home. Then we stopped for lunch at Aubergine Kitchen in Orem. By then she was pretty well spent so we went home.

While on our drive, we saw that the weather had created ice on the branches of the trees in Provo Canyon. It's an effect we used to see in Kentucky at times but this is the first time we saw it here. So I stopped at Canyon Glen in Provo Canyon and snapped this photo.

Mondays have become our day off so to speak and we enjoy them.

Come Follow Me

Continuing with emphasis on Easter week...

Luke 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Mosiah 13:28 And moreover, I say unto you, that salvation doth not come by the law alone; and were it not for the atonement, which God himself shall make for the sins and iniquities of his people, that they must unavoidably perish, notwithstanding the law of Moses.

Mosiah 3:5-10

5 For behold, the time cometh, and is not far distant, that with power, the Lord Omnipotent who reigneth, who was, and is from all eternity to all eternity, shall come down from heaven among the children of men, and shall dwell in a tabernacle of clay, and shall go forth amongst men, working mighty miracles, such as healing the sick, raising the dead, causing the lame to walk, the blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear, and curing all manner of diseases. 6 And he shall cast out devils, or the evil spirits which dwell in the hearts of the children of men.

7 And lo, he shall suffer temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst, and fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be his anguish for the wickedness and the abominations of his people. 8 And he shall be called Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of heaven and earth, the Creator of all things from the beginning; and his mother shall be called Mary.

9 And lo, he cometh unto his own, that salvation might come unto the children of men even through faith on his name; and even after all this they shall consider him a man, and say that he hath a devil, and shall scourge him, and shall crucify him. 10 And he shall rise the third day from the dead; and behold, he standeth to judge the world; and behold, all these things are done that a righteous judgment might come upon the children of men.

13 And the Lord God hath sent his holy prophets among all the children of men, to declare these things to every kindred, nation, and tongue, that thereby whosoever should believe that Christ should come, the same might receive remission of their sins, and rejoice with exceedingly great joy, even as though he had already come among them.

Nice quiet Sunday. Cathy continues to improve. We might be able to get out for a nice walk today. The weather is not hospitable yet so maybe a shopping mall. We'll see.

I sang in the choir at church. I want to support the choir but our choir director insisted on weekly rehearsals whether or not we are singing in the near future and he selects very difficult songs. He seems to want the choir to be workd-class but it isn't. So, with his OK, I sometimes go to rehearsal on the day of a performance then sing with the choir that day.

We had a women's chorus sing also at Sacrament meeting yesterday and they were terrible. About 8 women mostly off key. It was excruciating. Sorry, but true.

Come Follow Me

We have finished 1st and 2nd Nephi and are apparently doing some interim supportive study about Easter week before continuing on in Jacob.

Mosiah 3:7 And lo, he shall suffer temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst, and fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be his anguish for the wickedness and the abominations of his people.

Luke 22:42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

"When hard times come, I try to remember that I chose to follow Christ before I came to earth and that challenges to my faith, my health, and my endurance are all part of the reason I’m here. And I certainly should never think that today’s trial calls into question God’s love for me or let it turn my faith in Him into doubt. Trials do not mean that the plan is failing; they are part of the plan meant to help me seek God. I become more like Him when I endure patiently, and hopefully, like Him, when in agony, I pray more earnestly."

Sister Michelle D. Craig, First Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency, October 2022

2 Nephi 25:12 But, behold, they shall have wars, and rumors of wars; and when the day cometh that the Only Begotten of the Father, yea, even the Father of heaven and of earth, shall manifest himself unto them in the flesh, behold, they will reject him, because of their iniquities, and the hardness of their hearts, and the stiffness of their necks. 13 Behold, they will crucify him; and after he is laid in a sepulchre for the space of three days he shall rise from the dead, with healing in his wings; and all those who shall believe on his name shall be saved in the kingdom of God. Wherefore, my soul delighteth to prophesy concerning him, for I have seen his day, and my heart doth magnify his holy name.

Served at the Bishops Storehouse again for my Saturday morning shift. Moderately busy for a Saturday. The weather was cooler and rainy.

I spent the rest of the day at home or running short errands. Cathy is still improving but still in pain unless she can sit in the LaZboy recliner with the heating pad on. She is getting up and moving around without the use of her walker and that's a good thing.

I'm planning on singing in the choir at church today.

Nephi's testimony regarding his writing

2 Nephi 33:10 And now, my beloved brethren, and also Jew, and all ye ends of the earth, hearken unto these words and believe in Christ; and if ye believe not in these words believe in Christ. And if ye shall believe in Christ ye will believe in these words, for they are the words of Christ, and he hath given them unto me; and they teach all men that they should do good.

11 And if they are not the words of Christ, judge ye—for Christ will show unto you, with power and great glory, that they are his words, at the last day; and you and I shall stand face to face before his bar; and ye shall know that I have been commanded of him to write these things, notwithstanding my weakness.

"Nephi testifies that the Book of Mormon contains the “words of Christ” and that if people “believe in Christ,” they will believe in the Book of Mormon.

It is important that in our teaching we make use of the language of holy writ...

The words and the way they are used in the Book of Mormon by the Lord should become our source of understanding and should be used by us in teaching gospel principles.

God uses the power of the word of the Book of Mormon as an instrument to change people’s lives…"

Beth, Kathy and Karen came to visit, eat  tacos and play games. Karen took this photo of us in front of our fireplace but then we didn't have one of her. Maybe I'll be able to fix that soon.

Cathy continues to improve but still has pretty severe pain if she pushes too hard. But she seems better each day.

I'm going to serve in the Bishops Storehouse today (Saturday) then take the afternoon and maybe wash the windows on the back of the house. The hardest part is getting the hose out and set up.

Come Follow Me

2 Nephi 32: 8 And now, my beloved brethren, I perceive that ye ponder still in your hearts; and it grieveth me that I must speak concerning this thing. For if ye would hearken unto the Spirit which teacheth a man to pray, ye would know that ye must pray; for the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray.

9 But behold, I say unto you that ye must pray always, and not faint; that ye must not perform any thing unto the Lord save in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ, that he will consecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may be for the welfare of thy soul.

Much like medicine, prayer works best when used as directed.

“Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessing” (D&C 19:38).

We enjoyed a nice breakfast visit with Jake and Fredrick at Corner Bakery yesterday. I try to get with Jake for breakfast at least once a week. I would love to do the same with Kevin and Adam but they are currently geographically unavailable. Sometimes it's just make and I at Del Taco but whenever possible we like to include Cathy. When that happens we usually go to Corner Bakery because they have menu items that Cathy can eat.

Didn't play pickleball because Art has Covid.

Today we hope to host Bob's wife, Kathy, who is visiting from Arizona, along with Beth and Karen. This will be lunch, I think, and I think we are bringing in tacos from "Smoked Tacos". Should be fun, especially for Cathy who is still recovering from her injuries from falling three weeks ago.

Come Follow Me

2 Nephi 32:3 Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.

4 Wherefore, now after I have spoken these words, if ye cannot understand them it will be because ye ask not, neither do ye knock; wherefore, ye are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark.

5 For behold, again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do.

7 And now I, Nephi, cannot say more; the Spirit stoppeth mine utterance, and I am left to mourn because of the unbelief, and the wickedness, and the ignorance, and the stiffneckedness of men; for they will not search knowledge, nor understand great knowledge, when it is given unto them in plainness, even as plain as word can be.

8 And now, my beloved brethren, I perceive that ye ponder still in your hearts; and it grieveth me that I must speak concerning this thing.

"Prayerful inquiry through asking, seeking, and knocking entails both holy communication and consecrated work. The blessings we seek, such as inspiration and direction from our Heavenly Father, require some effort on our part before we can obtain them.

True faith is focused in the Lord Jesus Christ and His attributes as the Son of God and on His mission and ministry. Such faith always leads to righteous action. The Lectures on Faith state that “faith [is] the first principle in revealed religion, and the foundation of all righteousness” and that it is also “the principle of action in all intelligent beings." Action alone is not faith in the Savior, but acting in accordance with correct principles is a central component of faith. Thus, “faith without works is dead” (James 2:20).

We should be simultaneously persistent in and patient with this active process of asking, seeking, and knocking.

Note the perseverance in prayerful inquiry in the following selected scriptural examples.

-    “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:12-13).

Discerning and accepting the will of God in our lives are fundamental elements of prayerful inquiry through asking, seeking, and knocking."

My LAPD retired ID card expired last August (2023). You can see from the photo that I'm "CCW Approved" (prior to expiration) meaning that the ID gives me the right to legally carry a concealed firearm anywhere in the country... a privilege I would like to keep. So even though the state of California made it more complex, I went through the process. The main obstacle was getting myself fingerprinted. So I went to the Lindon Police Department and they finger printed me for free and gave me the cards with my fingerprints on them. They looked pretty bad but I sent it in with my $60 check. The California Department of Justice (DOJ) rejected the prints so I went to Orem PD and they have an automated system that does a better job. I had to pay but the prints looked good and I sent them in. These, too, were rejected. Then I was notified that my fingerprints would be analyzed by a person rather than whatever automated system they had in Sacramento but that this would result in a delay. So weeks and months have gone by and no ID card. I had the thought last Sunday that I should contact LAPD and see if they were still working on getting me a new ID. On Monday I got a phone call indicating that they just needed an updated Firearms annual qualification form and to verify my address. So I had the form and emailed a copy and got an immediate reply that my ID would be mailed this week. So almost seven months later I might be legally CCW Approved. Of course I have carried a firearm in the meantime whenever I have felt the need but it will be nice to be finally "approved" again.

I'll try to remember to put a photo of the new ID in here when it arrives.

I worked in the temple yesterday. I really enjoy my current assignment as Dressing Room Coordinator. My most important assignment is managing the Name Issue process. I won't write more about that here but if anyone has questions I'll gladly discuss.

Come Follow Me

2 Nephi 31:19 And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.

20 Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.

21 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen.

"How do we press forward on the straight(sic) and narrow way? How do we focus on our eternal progression when we live in a world that demands such attention to daily tasks? How do we remain steadfast when so much around us is laden with sin? The people in Enoch’s day faced these same challenges. Enoch began his ministry preaching to an unrighteous audience, but the people softened their hearts and heeded the words of the Lord to “walk with me.”

So can we.

Our eternal progression on that straight and narrow path in the company of the Lord Jesus Christ is...made up of many steps. Our progress on this journey is determined by recognizing the straight and narrow path, having an eternal perspective, and acting accordingly."

President Elaine L. Jack, Relief Society General President, April 1994

I'm not sure why this quote includes the phrase "straight" and narrow way and "straight" and narrow path when it's been generally accepted that the phrase should read "strait" rather than "straight". Two different words that are often confused. Look them up if you're confused.

2 Nephi 31: 17 Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost. 18 And then are ye in this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life; yea, ye have entered in by the gate; ye have done according to the commandments of the Father and the Son; and ye have received the Holy Ghost, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, unto the fulfilling of the promise which he hath made, that if ye entered in by the way ye should receive. Eating right and exercise got may weight back down to 225.5. I was beginning to worry that by being off Mounjaro, my weight would go up but just remembering to eat right and at the right time seems to work just fine. Stay tuned.

I enjoyed serving in the Bishops Storehouse again yesterday afternoon. The people I serve are my brothers and sisters and my fellow missionaries are angels. It's so satisfying to help with that work.

Cathy is getting better every day now. Our prayers are being answered and she is healing. She walks carefully around the house without her walker now.

The weather has been very good lately. Clear and sunny with highs in the 60s. I almost don't want it to get any warmer but OK, that will be nice as well. Tomorrow is the first day of spring on the calendar and I really won't mind if winter is gone.

Going to the temple now so I'll continue this later.

2 Nephi 31:16 And now, my beloved brethren, I know by this that unless a man shall endure to the end, in following the example of the Son of the living God, he cannot be saved.

17 Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.

"As an eight-year-old, I had mistakenly presumed that the water of baptism washed away sins. Not so. In the years since my baptism, I have learned that sins are cleansed by the power of Jesus Christ through His atoning sacrifice as we make and keep the baptismal covenant. Then, through the gift of repentance, we can remain clean. I have also learned that the sacrament brings a powerful virtuous cycle into our lives, enabling us to retain a remission of our sins."

Cathy was feeling better again. She seems to be well on her way to recovery.

Come Follow Me

2 Nephi 31:13 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism—yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.

“The gift of the Holy Ghost, given to us by our Heavenly Father and administered by one having authority, includes the merciful promise: ‘If ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do’. Through the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, every member of the Church can receive ‘the words of Christ’ directly at any time or place. This personal divine guidance helps us to remain valiant in the testimony of Jesus Christ and endure to the end of our days. Isn’t this wonderful!”

My weight went up again. Yesterday was Sunday and not much physical activity. I got a walk in in the morning but mostly sitting, reading, watching TV after that. I stayed home from church with Cathy.

She's quite a bit better and I don't think she will require as much attention from me going forward. She actually walked some yesterday without her walker. Still a lot of pain but progress.

2 Nephi 31:3 For my soul delighteth in plainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the understanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding.

"The core elements of the gospel message are found in all the holy scriptures but are most clearly given to us in the Book of Mormon and in the revelations to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Here Jesus Himself plainly declares His doctrine and His gospel, with which God’s children must comply to “have eternal life.”

The gospel is clear and plain. It answers the most complex questions in life, yet even a young child can comprehend and apply it."

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

I am so grateful for the Book of Mormon. Especially these Isaiah chapters where Nephi and the Lord have clearly explained what Isaiah was telling us in the Old Testament.

Cathy had a setback in that she has developed a UTI. And yesterday being Saturday getting any antibiotics was difficult. But she persisted and got a prescription from Dr. Welch. Then our pharmacy, Wagreens in Pleasant Grove, experienced a power outage and shut down just as Dr  Welch phoned in the prescription. Anyway, after some confusion and with continued help from Dr Welch, we finally got the medication from the 24 hour Walgreens in Provo. Hopefully she will again start feeling better soon.

I worked in the Bishops Storehouse and had a good and busy day.

My weight is up a little because of the precarious nature of my day but should be back to 225ish by tomorrow.

2 Nephi 28:21 And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell.

"Constant vigilance is required to counteract complacency and casualness. To be vigilant is the state or action of keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties. And keeping watch denotes the act of staying awake to guard and protect. Spiritually speaking, we need to stay awake and be alert to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and the signals that come from the Lord’s watchmen on the towers."

Happy birthday, Dad!

We saw Dr. Brady Barker yesterday afternoon. He is the doctor that Cathy determined was a trauma specialist among other things. He was impressive and seemed knowledgeable. Bottom line: Cathy does not need surgery and should heal with time. She and I are greatly relieved. The whole experience really perked her up.

Beth came over to see us and brought a really delicious all-in-one dinner dish that we later heated up and devoured. Beth is a true angel and is going to bring us a dinner on Sunday afternoon as well. The weather was great and makes it look like spring will be here soon. Clear and sunny with highs near 60 degrees.

I'll be serving at the Bishops Storehouse this morning. We should be very busy... Saturdays usually are. It is such a great blessing to me to help serve these people who are in need.

Come Follow Me

2 Nephi 28:7 Yea, and there shall be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die; and it shall be well with us.

There are many of us who are tempted to not consider the long view as we live our lives... just what feels good now. But we should always keep in mind that life is eternal. We are going to be somewhere and doing something in 20, 50 or100 years and beyond. What we do today will impact our lives for the rest of eternity. It would be well for us to "Think Celestial".

"When you make choices, I invite you to take the long view—an eternal view. Put Jesus Christ first because your eternal life is dependent upon your faith in Him and in His Atonement. It is also dependent upon your obedience to His laws. Obedience paves the way for a joyful life for you today and a grand, eternal reward tomorrow."

Think Celestial! By President Russell M. Nelson, October 2023

2 Nephi 31:3 For my soul delighteth in plainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the understanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding.

Played pickleball and enjoyed it as usual.

I spent the rest of the day relaxing and caring for Cathy. She is still in a lot of pain. We are seeing a trauma surgeon today and hopefully that will give us an indication of how to proceed. I'm hoping it will be just rest and exercise.

2 Nephi 27:26 Therefore, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, yea, a marvelous work and a wonder, for the wisdom of their wise and learned shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent shall be hid.

"The identity and destiny of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints require that we be called by His name. I was recently in Kirtland, Ohio, where the Prophet Joseph Smith, with only a few members of the Church, prophesied, “This Church will fill North and South America—it will fill the world.” The Lord described the work of this dispensation as “a marvelous work and a wonder.”  He spoke of a “covenant [that would] be fulfilled in the latter days,” allowing “all … the earth [to] be blessed.”…

When the Savior returns in majesty and glory, faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be among all nations, all people, all races, and all cultures of the world."

Elder Neil L. Andersen Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2021

Alma 37:6 Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise. 7 And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.

Elder Gong also said that learning to identify the influence of the Holy Ghost will help members of the Church avoid deception if deepfakes of Church leaders are published. He encouraged reliance on the Holy Spirit, wisdom and trusted sources whenever using AI.

“While generative artificial intelligence may be quick to offer information, it can never replace revelation or generate truth from God. If something does not feel right or is inconsistent with what you know is true, seek to discern before believing,” he said.

Journal Entry: I completed my sleep test and feel that I slept pretty well. I won't get the results until a day or two but it should be interesting. Right now I believe that if I can get 6 hours of good sleep I'm in good shape. That's my goal. Obviously more than that would probably be a good thing but we'll see.

Today I'm going to play pickleball with my friends. It's good exercise and a lot of fun. Then I'll spend the rest of the day with Cathy. Tomorrow we see another doctor and that should give us good direction on how to move forward and what we might expect in the way of healing.

2 Nephi 27:23 For behold, I am God; and I am a God of miracles; and I will show unto the world that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and I work not among the children of men save it be according to their faith.

"God blesses us according to our faith. Faith is the source of living with divine purpose and eternal perspective. Faith is a practical principle that inspires diligence. It is a vital, living force manifest in our positive attitude and desire to willingly do everything that God and Jesus Christ ask of us. It takes us to our knees to implore the Lord for guidance and to arise and act with confidence to achieve things consistent with His will."

Elder Ulisses Soares, then Of the Presidency of the Seventy, April 2017

2 Nephi 27:1 But, behold, in the last days, or in the days of the Gentiles—yea, behold all the nations of the Gentiles and also the Jews, both those who shall come upon this land and those who shall be upon other lands, yea, even upon all the lands of the earth, behold, they will be drunken with iniquity and all manner of abominations— 2 And when that day shall come they shall be visited of the Lord of Hosts, with thunder and with earthquake, and with a great noise, and with storm, and with tempest, and with the flame of devouring fire.

2 Nephi 29:12 For behold, I shall speak unto the Jews and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the Nephites and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto the other tribes of the house of Israel, which I have led away, and they shall write it; and I shall also speak unto all nations of the earth and they shall write it. 13 And it shall come to pass that the Jews shall have the words of the Nephites, and the Nephites shall have the words of the Jews; and the Nephites and the Jews shall have the words of the lost tribes of Israel; and the lost tribes of Israel shall have the words of the Nephites and the Jews.

Cathy's MRI indicated two fractures in her pelvis and other significant injuries. She will see a doctor on Friday who specializes in accident related pelvic fractures. Should be at least interesting.

I fixed her up with what she needed in order to put her breakfast of oatmeal together then I went to the temple. The first two endowment sessions, 0530 and 0600, were attended by 100% of the men who were on the sign up register. Zero no-shows. Plus a couple of walk-ins. It was pretty busy the rest of the morning as well.

I picked up my sleep test equipment at the sleep center. So I'll do the sleep test tonight and see what the results might be. I am beginning to feel that I'll sleep better without using the CPAP machine. We'll see.

2 Nephi 26:29 He commandeth that there shall be no priestcrafts; for, behold, priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion.

"Focusing on the needs of the students, a gospel teacher will never obscure their view of the Master by standing in the way or by shadowing the lesson with self-promotion or self-interest. This means that a gospel teacher must never indulge in priestcrafts, which are “that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world.” A gospel teacher does not preach “to become popular” or “for the sake of riches and honor." He or she follows the marvelous Book of Mormon example in which “the preacher was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than the learner.” Both will always look to the Master."

Cathy was still in a lot of pain yesterday and she worked on getting an MRI scheduled. She actually got scheduled for one in Sandy at Alta View hospital at 6 p.m. last night. Hopefully we can get the results this morning and learn what we have to do next. Surgery is apparently going to be needed if any fracture is discovered in her hip. If no fracture then it's just healing over time, hopefully sooner rather than later. We should no more today.

I went to my new CPAP doctor yesterday and he ordered a new sleep test for me. I conducted my own test last night by not using my CPAP machine and I think I slept better and didn't snore. One of the main causes of sleep apnea is being overweight. As of this morning I weigh 222 which is a lot less than I used to weigh. I think I'm going to be better off without the CPAP machine and sleep just fine. We'll see.

We're scheduled for the Bishops Storehouse today. Obviously Cathy won't be there but if everything lines up, I should be able to go.

"What does it take for you to be drawn to the Savior? Consider Jesus Christ’s submission to His Father’s will, His victory over death, His taking upon Himself your sins and mistakes, His receiving power from the Father to make intercession for you, and His ultimate redemption of you. Are these things not sufficient to draw you to Him? They are for me. Jesus Christ “stands with open arms, hoping and willing to heal, forgive, cleanse, strengthen, purify, and sanctify [you and me]."

Cathy is still unable to walk without a walker and so we are going to be trying to get additional medical help, maybe an MRI, done today.

I have an appointment with my new CPAP doctor today and I'm hoping a new sleep test can be done and that a CPAP machine will no longer be indicated.

Cathy has an appointment now with Dr Welch at the same time but they are almost next to each other so shouldn't be a problem.

I did some reading in the Book of Mormon as I do each day. As we come to the end of the "Isaiah Chapters" I'm comfortable with the fact that 1. Isaiah's writings are probably a compilation of documents he produced at various times. 2. They apply to occurrences during his life and prophecies regarding the meridian of time as well as the latter days. And 3. They describe and foretell an unwillingness by many to obey God's loving commandments and directions - Satan's influence.

Journal Entry: Cathy is still pretty immobile. She can get around using a walker but can't really move much without one. It's been six days since her injury. I'm thinking that tomorrow we need to get additional medical advice about how to proceed. It's not good for people our age to not have exercise. I think we tend  to go downhill rather quickly without activity.

I served at the Bishops Storehouse yesterday and Cathy was OK when I got home. We have her sitting in the big recliner with a heating pad and that helps her pain some. And she tries to move around the house using her walker so that's a good thing.

We have church today and I need to be there because the people who are replacing us in the Resource Center need to get my key and maybe I need to show them a few things.

The weather was warm yesterday, near 50 degrees, and I was able to take a comfortable walk in our neighborhood. Hopefully the same today.

2 Nephi 25:26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

There was a quote in the We Believe app  from a member of the Relief Society General Presidency that implied that keeping our home neat and clean was not as important as daily scripture study and weekly family home evening. I think that's a mistake to say say that in a general conference address. We should be able to keep our homes presentable and also have time to study the Gospel. Our homes should be sacred and holy places where our children can learn to "know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins" and also learn to appreciate being neat and clean.

Jake texted and asked if he could come over and sit with Cathy so I might get away for a short time. That actually coincided with a commitment I made earlier to serve as a substitute in the temple. So I went to the temple and Jake came over here to be with his mom. She really enjoyed his visit. Later she was able to walk a few steps without her walker so improvement is happening.

I'm going to serve at the Bishops Storehouse today. Later, I hope to finish my files project and restore our office to its normal orderliness.

I got a call from Bishop Schoonover a couple of days ago advising that Cathy and I will be released from our Callings as Resource Center Specialists (librarians) tomorrow. There is a couple that he feels needs to be in that calling and he thinks by working in the temple and being Service Missionaries at the Bishops Storehouse that we have enough to do. Actually serving in the library has been not very busy. Cathy doesn't do it at all and I only do it on the first third and fifth Sundays. Takes less than an hour a month out of my life. I could probably do more but I get done what needs to be done. It'll be nice to not have that responsibility such as it is.

"On Easter Sunday we celebrate the most long-awaited and glorious event in the history of the world.

It is the day that changed everything.

On that day, my life changed. Your life changed. The destiny of all God’s children changed.

On that blessed day, the Savior of mankind, who had taken upon Himself the chains of sin and death that held us captive, burst those chains and set us free."

Because of the sacrifice of our beloved Redeemer, death has no sting, the grave has no victory, Satan has no lasting power, and we are “begotten … again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

Jake has volunteered to come over and take care of Cathy while I go to the temple to substitute for another ordinance worker.

I'm Going to ride with Dennis Gauger. He and his wife, Katie, are new friends in our Ward. They are very nice and very supportive of us. Dennis recently became an Ordinance Worker and seems to be enjoying it a lot. I enjoy spending time with them.

Cathy is still in a lot of pain and I am beginning to worry that she might be more injured than we thought. Her xrays on Monday evening were "negative" but maybe further testing is indicated. She has swelling in her left hip but no bruising. Today is Friday and so normal medical resources will probably not be available until Monday.

2 Nephi 25:20 And now, my brethren, I have spoken plainly that ye cannot err. And as the Lord God liveth that brought Israel up out of the land of Egypt, and gave unto Moses power that he should heal the nations after they had been bitten by the poisonous serpents, if they would cast their eyes unto the serpent which he did raise up before them, and also gave him power that he should smite the rock and the water should come forth; yea, behold I say unto you, that as these things are true, and as the Lord God liveth, there is none other name given under heaven save it be this Jesus Christ, of which I have spoken, whereby man can be saved.

"The Lord had promised to heal all who were bitten by poisonous snakes if they would simply look upon [the brass serpent]. In holding up the doctrine of Christ before us, the Lord’s prophet is doing the same, “that he should heal the nations.” Whatever the bites or poison or struggles we experience in this mortal wilderness, let us not be as those who, anciently and presently, could have been healed but, sadly, “would not look … because they did not believe that it would heal them.” The Book of Mormon affirms: “Behold, … this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ.”

I just noticed that I didn't complete this yesterday and I can't recall why. Actually, I think I did but it didn't take for some reason.

I was going to play pickleball but the seminary students who met in the stake center needed to have access to the cultural hall so we gave it up. We had it reserved but figured that the seminary kids were more important than four aging high priests playing pickleball. Duh. Wasn't difficult.

Instead I went to breakfast with Jake and then did a little grocery shopping. Spent the rest of the day with Cathy. She's still hurting and can't get around very well.

Wherefore, my soul delighteth to prophesy concerning him, for I have seen his day, and my heart doth magnify his holy name.

"My dear friends, we all have something in our lives that is broken that needs to be mended, fixed, or healed. Staying home today to help Cathy as she recovers from the injuries she suffered when she slipped on the ice and fell at University Place on Monday. Yesterday I exercised here at home and continued my efforts to clean up our files.

At 4:30 I realized that no one was going to complete the produce order at the Bishops Storehouse except me so I hurried over and did that and worked the last two hours then closed up at 6:30. I'm hoping Cathy will be feeling better today.

2 Nephi 24:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! Art thou cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!

13 For thou hast said in thy heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north;

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.

15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

"Satan’s purpose was to gain for himself the Father’s honor and power...

Cast down as unembodied spirits in mortality, Satan and his followers tempt and seek to deceive and captivate the children of God. So it is that the evil one, who opposed and sought to destroy the Father’s plan, actually facilitated it, because it is opposition that enables choice and it is the opportunity of making the right choices that leads to the growth that is the purpose of the Father’s plan."

Journal Entry: Monday started out pretty well. Breakfast at Chuck-fil-A then 7500 + steps at University Place Mall. As we were walking out of the mall to get into our car, Cathy slipped on a patch of ice and fell hard. It was the kind of fall where you feel OK right away but everything gets worse as time goes by. And it did for Cathy. We went to see Beth and Karen and actually went to lunch with them at Guru's. Then we hurried home because Ron and Janet McDonald were coming for a visit. After sitting and visiting do over an hour, Cathy couldn't walk more than about two steps because her pain was so bad. Her left hip.

So we took her to the ER at American Fork hospital where xrays revealed no fractures or other issues.  So she is in a lot of pain and probably will continue to be for the rest of today. We should see improvement after that.

I've decided to start putting my vitals (usually just daily weight) in my journal rather than my calendar. I will normally put my weight in every day. Occasionally I will add my blood pressure.

Journal Entry:

Yesterday we had Jake and his entire family over for our newly traditional Fast Sunday evening meal. Cathy loves doing it so I try to help as much as possible. Cathy made a breakfast casserole that was to die for. I made a great big bowl of fruit salad and we had Budda Bakery rolls. The rolls are the best I've ever seen or tasted. They are about two bucks each but worth every penny.

Everyone (including me) enjoyed the visit and the meal.

Come Follow Me:

We are studying the infamous Isaiah chapters of 2nd Nephi. One of the best things I've gotten out of this years Book of Mormon study is beginning to understand these chapters.

* It's important to understand that the language used by Isaiah was probably much more week understood during the time in which he wrote. When you think about it that makes sense.

* Isaiah's teachings seem to pertain to at least three different historical periods: His current time around 600bc, The meridian of time or the time when the Savior lived, And our time, the Latter days or the days preceding the Second Coming.

* It helps to have a prayerful attitude.

* It helps to have some talented and inspired commentary to lean on.

2 Nephi 19:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Peace can prevail only when that natural inclination to fight is superseded by self-determination to live on a loftier level. Coming unto Jesus Christ as the “Prince of Peace” is the pathway to peace on earth and goodwill among men.

Elder Russell M. Nelson Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostle, October 2002

2 Nephi 21:2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord; and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears.

"Different from but related to the fears we often experience is what the scriptures describe as “godly fear” or “the fear of the Lord." Unlike worldly fear that creates alarm and anxiety, godly fear is a source of peace, assurance, and confidence.

But how can anything associated with fear be edifying or spiritually helpful?

...godly fear grows out of a correct understanding of the divine nature and mission of the Lord Jesus Christ, a willingness to submit our will to His will, and a knowledge that every man and woman will be accountable for his or her own sins in the Day of Judgment."

Elder David A. Bednar Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostle, April 2015

We enjoyed serving in the Bishops Storehouse again. Saturdays are usually pretty busy because we're only open from 0900 to 1200 (9a.m. - noon). And Saturdays are generally days when most people have some time to get to the Storehouse. It has been very interesting and enjoyable to interact with people who come to the Storehouse. I meet people who are truly angelic. Yesterday there was a woman who was with an elderly Spanish speaking woman. Both were very pleasant. The elderly woman wanted to be a part of the process and insisted on accompanying us as we loaded her cart. I offered to have her sit in the waiting area while her younger friend and I gathered her food items but she would have no part of that. The younger woman was there to assist. She spoke Spanish and English very well and cheerfully did much of the work. She clearly enjoyed helping her older friend and was very pleasant to work with. Many of the people I met there are like that.

It truly is a great blessing to me to interact with the patrons at the Storehouse. It has helped me to appreciate the wonderful people who are in need or are helping others in need.

As I stepped out of our home yesterday morning, I was greeted with this amazing sunrise.

Looking east from our front yard we see Mt. Timpanogos on the left and Mt. Kyhv (pronounced like hive or kive - formally Squaw Peak) on the right.

I spent a large part of the day sorting our files and re-doing many of the folders. We have four files drawers and three of them were bursting at the seams. I got through one drawer but developed a system that should make doing the other two drawers go quickly.

Cathy is getting ready to have Jake and his family over for dinner on Sunday afternoon.

We walked at Rock Canyon Park yesterday. The weather was clear and sunny. This picture is the Provo Temple which will soon be demolished and rebuilt.

This is Rock Canyon as seen from the park.

The view of Mt.Timpanogos from the park speaks for itself.

One of the very attractive homes that back up to the park is this one. They always have a brief message posted on their back wall. This one, "Adieu Beloved Temple", speaks for itself and is obviously a reference to the soon to be demolished old Provo Temple.

We ate at the Smoked Taco in Saratoga Springs because the new Smoked Taco in Pleasant Grove is not quite open yet. Soon though and their tacos are just about the best there is.

Come Follow Me

2 Nephi 13:15 What mean ye? Ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor, saith the Lord God of Hosts.

"And there are still those, not a few, who without compassion “grind the faces of the poor.”...

I commend most warmly those who with a compelling spirit of kindness reach out to those in distress, regardless of whom they might be, to help and assist, to feed and provide for, to nurture and to bless. As these extend mercy, I am confident that the God of heaven will bless them, and their posterity after them, with His own mercy. I am satisfied that these who impart so generously will not lack in their own store, but that there will be food on their tables and a roof over their heads. One cannot be merciful to others without receiving a harvest of mercy in return."

Going to play pickleball with my buds this morning  (I think). Cathy is well. I slept pretty well. Should be a beautiful day with high temps in the 50s.

We enjoyed a drive over to Saratoga Springs and had tacos at Smoked Tacos. Then drove around a bit and walked at Rock Canyon Park in Provo. See the Pics tomorrow.

Come Follow Me

2 Nephi 12:3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths; for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

"From my window in the Young Women office, I have a spectacular view of the Salt Lake Temple. Every day I see the angel Moroni standing atop the temple as a shining symbol of not only his faith but ours. I love Moroni because, in a very degenerate society, he remained pure and true. He is my hero. He stood alone. I feel somehow he stands atop the temple today, beckoning us to have courage, to remember who we are, and to be worthy to enter the holy temple—to “arise and shine forth,” to stand above the worldly clamor, and to, as Isaiah prophesied, “Come … to the mountain of the Lord”—the holy temple."
