2023 August 31, Journal Entry

Served in the temple as an Ordinance Worker. It was a very good morning.

We invited my sister, Beth and niece, Karen over for dinner and afterward played a fun game with them.
The photo is supposed to be amusing by showing cards hidden in my arm band.
We have decided that the best way to "go out" to dinner is to invite people to our home, then, after looking at an online menu, I drive down to R&R BBQ and bring the meal back home where we eat in quiet, peaceful comfort. Cathy doesn't have to spend all day cooking and we can enjoy visiting with our guests.

Come Follow Me

1 Corinthians 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Bible Dictionary: Charity: The highest, noblest, strongest kind of love, not merely affection; the pure love of Christ

Moroni 7:44 ...if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confesses by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity; for if he have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity.

45 And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

46 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth.

We served in the Bishops Storehouse and, again, I enjoyed doing so. There are an increasing number of people who need food and I am glad to be with those who are helping them.

Serving in the temple this morning.

We are, I believe, having Beth and Karen over for dinner this evening. We wabble another chance to visit with Karen befits she returns to California. She has been a great help to Devin's wife, Maddi.

1 Corinthians 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Cathy had a medical appointment this morning so we didn't walk until afternoon. It was hot - low 90s - but cooler up by the falls and quite a bit of shade as well. We made it for three miles. We also drove around the Alpine Loop from American Fork Canyon to Sundance. It's got to be one of the most beautiful drives in the world.

1 Corinthians 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

"A perfect time to ask, “What lack I yet?” is when we take the sacrament. The Apostle Paul taught that this is a time for each of us to examine ourselves. In this reverent atmosphere, as our thoughts are turned heavenward, the Lord can gently tell us what we need to work on next."

Elder Larry R. Lawrence Of the Seventy, October 2015

The Scripture Plus app describes Paul as being dedicated to the level that he apparently accepted no pay or reward from the membership where he taught and tried to be a person who they could relate to and appreciate. It points out that participating in Gospel teachings and activities is a little like an athletic competition where training and preparation can be needed. But in the Gospel of Jesus Christ everyone who works and tries, wins.

Stake Conference yesterday - We didn't go. Went for a long walk together then mostly just stayed home. Today's Come Follow Me topic is one that I am blessed to enjoy and support.

1 Corinthians 11:11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

"As covenant-keeping women and men, we need to lift each other and help each other become the people the Lord would have us become." Linda K. Burton, Relief Society General President, April 2015

"For anyone to attain the fulness of priesthood blessings, there must be a husband and a wife sealed in the house of the Lord, working together in righteousness and remaining faithful to their covenants. This is the Lord’s plan for His children, and no amount of public discourse or criticism will change what the Lord has declared. We need to continue to model righteous marriages, seek for that blessing in our lives, and have faith if it is slow in coming. Let us be defenders of marriage as the Lord has ordained it while continuing to show love and compassion for those with differing views." Bonnie L. Oscarson, Young Women General President, April 2015

Served in the Bishops Storehouse. I enjoy Saturdays because they are so busy. We're only open from 9-noon but lots of people can only come on Saturdays so...

Cathy's eye problems are getting worse. She has an appointment with a specialist in about a week but in the mean time she is suffering. It's just hard for her to see sometimes and today seemed to be worse.

"Filling our mind with the power of Jesus Christ does not mean that He is the only thought we have. But it does mean that all our thoughts are circumscribed in His love, His life and teachings, and His atoning sacrifice and glorious Resurrection. Jesus is never in a forgotten corner, because our thoughts of Him are always present and “all that is in [us adores] him!” We pray and rehearse in our mind experiences that have brought us closer to Him. We welcome into our mind divine images, holy scriptures, and inspired hymns to gently cushion the countless daily thoughts rushing through our busy lives. Our love for Him does not shield us from the sadness and sorrow in this mortal life, but it allows us to walk through the challenges with a strength far beyond our own."
Elder Neil L. Andersen Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, April

Sunset

Coming home after dinner last night, I couldn't help but notice another beautiful sunset.

3-2023 August 26, Journal Entry

Yesterday we went to the temple for an endowment session (Murdo Cameron).  The Spirit was strong and there were some new changes in the presentation which made it even better.
Went to dinner with the Hansons and enjoyed visiting with them.
We also walked  in the canyon again in the morning and I got my steps in.

Come Follow Me
 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

A large part of what is being taught in this part of 1st Corinthians seems to deal with sexual relations of all types... Both within marriages and otherwise. I am grateful that this is an area that is no problem for me. I have been married since 1977 to the love of my life and have been true to her in every way. She has made it very easy for me because she is so lovely and loving. She truly has been one of God's greatest blessings to me. I have my share of behavioral problems but sex is not one of them and I am thankful for that.

Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls is really living up to it's name lately. I read recently that the powers that be are entertaining the idea of expanding the park area around the base of the falls and making it a nicer and safer place for visitors and tourists. Personally, I think that could be a very good thing if done well.

3-2023 August 25, Journal Entry

We did a 3+ mile walk at Bridal Veil Falls then drove up to Kamas for lunch. The Mirror Lake Diner serves good food but it's too expensive and too far away. I don't think we will not be going back there in the near future.

We have a temple session scheduled for this afternoon at 2:30, then dinner with Darrell and Karen Hansen who are in town for BYU Education Week.

Come Follow Me

1st Corinthians 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

"With your body being such a vital part of God’s eternal plan, it is little wonder that the Apostle Paul described it as a “temple of God.” Each time you look in the mirror, see your body as your temple. That truth—refreshed gratefully each day—can positively influence your decisions about how you will care for your body and how you will use it. And those decisions will determine your destiny. How could this be? Because your body is the temple for your spirit. And how you use your body affects your spirit. Some of the decisions that will determine your eternal destiny include:

How will you choose to care for and use your body?

What spiritual attributes will you choose to develop?"

He seems to be in good spirits and working hard as a good dad.

The ScripturePlus app continues to be a mystery to us. They constantly go through periods where only scriptures appear in their app. No commentary or videos which enhance the presentation. I sent them a message but so far nothing.

1st Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

"Think of the effect temples have on their surroundings. Why do they beautify and shine? Because, as the scriptures say, “Truth shineth,” and temples contain truth and eternal purpose; so do you."  Neill F. Marriott, 2nd Counselor, Young Women's General Presidency, October 2014

"The most worthy calling in life … is that in which man can serve best his fellow man. … The noblest aim in life is to strive to live to make other lives better and happier." David O. McKay

"Cherish virtue. Your personal purity is one of your greatest sources of power. When you came to the earth, you were given the precious gift of a body. Your body is the instrument of your mind and a divine gift with which you exercise your agency. This is a gift that Satan was denied, and thus he directs nearly all of his attacks on your body. He wants you to disdain, misuse, and abuse your body. Immodesty, pornography, immorality, tattoos and piercings, drug abuse, and addictions of all kinds are all efforts to take possession of this precious gift—your body—and to make it difficult for you to exercise your agency. Paul asks, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” Your body is a temple."

1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

"If we will look to Christ and open our eyes and our ears, the Holy Ghost will bless us to see the Lord Jesus Christ working in our lives, strengthening our faith in Him with assurance and evidence... We will see and understand ourselves and the world around us the way the Savior does. We will come to have what the Apostle Paul called “the mind of Christ.” We will have eyes to see and ears to hear, and we will build the kingdom of God."

Elder Kim B. Clark of The Seventy, October 2015

Fredrick on his way to his first day in kindergarten.

Pretty quiet day... Monday. Went to Chick-fil-a for breakfast - kind of a Monday thing now - and then walked a little up in the canyon. It started raining so we took a little drive then went home. After the rain stopped we walked here in the 'hood and got my steps in.

I weighed in at 239 yesterday which is the first time in a long time that I was under 240. I was 239 again this morning. At 6'7", 239 is not a bad weight. I had a goal of reaching 238 so I'm basically there. I am just eating better and exercising. The way I've done this is to basically alter my life style so that I'm actually comfortable eating healthier and, I hope, will continue.

Come Follow Me

1 Corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

"When I think of what the Savior did for us leading up to that first Easter Sunday, I want to lift up my voice and shout praises to the Most High God and His Son, Jesus Christ!

The gates of heaven are unlocked!

The windows of heaven are opened!

Today and forevermore God’s grace is available to all whose hearts are broken and whose spirits are contrite. Jesus Christ has cleared the way for us to ascend to heights incomprehensible to mortal minds.

I pray that we will see with new eyes and a new heart the eternal significance of the Savior’s atoning sacrifice. I pray that we will show our love for God and our gratitude for the gift of God’s infinite grace by keeping His commandments and joyfully “walk[ing] in [a] newness of life.”

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, April 2015, "The Gift of Grace"

The things that will bring us true happiness, serving and loving others, will result in blessings that can't even be imagined but which will be wonderful and celestial in nature.

Book of Mormon reading

Mosiah Chapter 4 King Benjamin continues his address—Salvation comes because of the Atonement—Believe in God to be saved—Retain a remission of your sins through faithfulness—Impart of your substance to the poor—Do all things in wisdom and order. About 124 B.C.

6 I say unto you, if ye have come to a knowledge of the goodness of God, and his matchless power, and his wisdom, and his patience, and his long-suffering towards the children of men; and also, the atonement which has been prepared from the foundation of the world, that thereby salvation might come to him that should put his trust in the Lord, and should be diligent in keeping his commandments, and continue in the faith even unto the end of his life, I mean the life of the mortal body—7 I say, that this is the man who receiveth salvation, through the atonement which was prepared from the foundation of the world for all mankind, which ever were since the fall of Adam, or who are, or who ever shall be, even unto the end of the world.

22 And if ye judge the man who putteth up his petition to you for your substance that he perish not, and condemn him, how much more just will be your condemnation for withholding your substance, which doth not belong to you but to God, to whom also your life belongeth; and yet ye put up no petition, nor repent of the thing which thou hast done.

Romans 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

Now moving into Corinthians:

1 Corinthians 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

"When writing to the Saints in Corinth, the Apostle Paul observed that not many of them would be considered wise by worldly standards. But that didn’t matter, because 'God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.' The history of God’s work is filled with people who considered themselves inadequate."

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, October 2017

Serving at the Bishops' Storehouse yesterday went very smoothly even for a Saturday. I actually got to work with the forklift a little and that was an interesting change. I'm starting to feel more accepted and part of the group and that's nice. But that's usually the way it goes for me. When I start something new whether working at the temple or on our service mission it just takes time to become more a part of what's going on. I think I'm there now at the temple and at the Bishops' Storehouse.

We went to lunch at Corner Bakery then stopped in to visit Beth and Karen.

Come Follow Me

Romans 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

Mosiah 18:21 And he commanded them that there should be no contention one with another, but that they should look forward with one eye, having one faith and one baptism, having their hearts knit together in unity and in love one towards another.

I felt a prompting here that if there is someone we are close to who we feel needs to improve in some aspect of their life, and I do have at least one person in mind, the best thing we can do for them is to love them and show appreciation for the good things they do. That's two things: 1. Love them, and 2. Show appreciation for the good things they do.

I worry about Cathy and her neck and head pain. She is in almost constant pain and there doesn't seem to be much that we can do.

We walked about five miles in Provo Canyon. If we park at the parking area for Bridal Veil Falls it is about a half mile to the falls and then another two miles up to Vivian Park. The net effect is about a five mile walk up and back. We go there a lot because on these warm summer days it is cooler there and lots of shade. Pretty country too.

You can still see some of the devestation caused by the avalanche that occurred here last winter. They are gradually getting it cleaned up. There are plans to dramatically improve the area around the falls because it's such a popular tourist site.

Come Follow Me
Romans 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Romans 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 20 Therefore

if he thirst, give him drink:
for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

Erica Partridge - Eighth grade

Erica going into the 8th grade. She is lovely, friendly, charitable and fun to be around.

2023 August 17, Journal Entry

Yesterday afternoon we got to see a rainbow. That's seems to be a little unusual around here so here it is.

I enjoyed serving in the Initiatory section of the temple. I get to interact with most of the brethren on my shift and I got to know Scott Florence, the other regularly assigned Initiatory Coordinator. Another good and interesting guy.

Spent the rest of the day with Cathy and then we went to the Orem Farmers Market. Got some fruit - especially peaches - and had a huge chicken beast sandwich. Took some peaches over to Jake. He and Erica and Fredrick meet us at the front door and selected some peaches, greeted us but wouldn't invite us in. It's that easy more and more with them. They seem to have difficulties with keeping their home clean and neat to an extent that they don't normally want anyone to come inside.

It's disappointing because our principle reason for moving here was to be close to them but it isn't working out as hoped. We've actually talked about moving back to Kentucky or maybe even Tennessee but I don't think we'll do that.

Come Follow Me

The Family Proclamation: “The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God’s commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife. We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God’s eternal plan.”

The ScripturePlus app has retroactively added content... Again.

The above quote is from the lesson for  August 8th - over a week ago. I'm going back and trying to catch up but it's hard when the content is so late in coming.

Romans 7. Showing gratitude to God is, of course, important, and true disciples give sincere thanks to the Father for His incomparable goodness. But more is called for as we relate to God than words of thanks alone. We also show our gratitude by our deeds, keeping His commandments, and following His Son.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

When we are righteous, willing, and able, when we are striving to be worthy and qualified, we progress to places we never imagined and become part of Heavenly Father’s “divine design.” Each of us has divinity within us. When we see God working through us and with us, may we be encouraged, even grateful for that guidance. When our Father in Heaven said, “This is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man,” He was talking about all of His children—you in particular.

I went to the Bishops' Storehouse at 0530 yesterday and worked with Dave Sherratt on my forklift training. He signed me off and I am now approved and certified to work the forklift if needed.

Then I played pickleball with Bill Harvey, Art Sandgren and Art's brother, Chuck. Fun exercise.

Cathy and I worked our regular tour at the Bishops' Storehouse from 2 to 6:30 p.m.

I've been asked to substitute at the Initiatory Desk this morning so I have to be there at 0445. Got to get going. Gonna be tired today.

Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

"The process of God-directed purging and purifying will, of necessity, be wrenching and painful at times. Recalling Paul’s expression, we are “joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”

So, in the midst of this refiner’s fire, rather than get angry with God, get close to God. Call upon the Father in the name of the Son. Walk with Them in the Spirit, day by day. Allow Them over time to manifest Their fidelity to you. Come truly to know Them and truly to know yourself. Let God prevail."

3-2023 August 15, Journal Entry

Mondays are nice quiet days. We went to breakfast together then walked a little over 5 miles from Bridal Veil Falls up to Vivian Park and back.

I finally got my PIN letter from the bank and was able to activate my debit card. I couldn't do it over the phone but I went to an "approved" ATM in a 7-11 store and it worked.

Pretty much relaxed the rest of the day because it was so hot outside.

Come Follow Me (Romans 8,9)

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

"We are His. Paul said, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.” Often the first Primary song we learn is “I Am a Child of God.”  Now it is time to take that beloved phrase “I am a child of God” and add the words “Therefore, what?” We might even ask questions such as these: “What will I do to live my life as a child of God?” “How can I develop the divine nature that is within me?”

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf said, “God sent you here to prepare for a future greater than anything you can imagine.”  That future, a day at a time, comes alive when you do more than just exist; it comes alive when you live your life to fill the measure of your creation. This invites the Lord into your life, and you begin to let His will become yours."

3-2023 August 14 Journal Entry

It's Monday morning and nothing much on my calendar. The Wasatch Blue group of retired LAPD and other law enforcement types is meeting for lunch today at Marley's. I would like to join them if we're not otherwise occupied. I think we will try to take our four mile walk up in Provo Canyon.

Yesterday was pretty quiet. I figured out how to move my journal entries from my Journal app to this blog. And also how to put them in the right order chronologically. I think. Time will tell.

Come Follow Me

 Romans 7 and 8

Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

"We will regard our body as a temple of our very own.  We will not let it be desecrated or defaced in any way.  We will control our diet and exercise for physical fitness. Should not equal attention be paid to spiritual fitness?  Just as physical strength requires exercise, so spiritual strength requires effort. Among the most important of spiritual exercises is prayer. It engenders harmony with God and a desire to keep His commandments. Prayer is a key to wisdom, virtue, and humility."

Catching up 2017 and 2018 is complete

I have successfully moved all my Journey entries from 2017 and 2018 into blogs. I will work on 2019 and later soon. I've figured out how to put these entries into their appropriate dates in blogs so success. No more Journey entries. Everything will be blogs.

Not much to report. Had my checkup with Dr. Welch. That went pretty well. Then I drove Cathy downtown SLC so she could find a church dress. No luck.

Today I'm going to the Bishops' Storehouse for more forklift training. I'm going to enjoy being able to help with operating the forklift when needed.

The question came up as to whether Bishops' Storehouse should have the apostrophe between the p and the s in Bishops' or after the s. I have decided to put myself in the camp that has the apostrophe after the s, meaning Bishops plural possessive and not single.in plain terms, Bishop's Storehouse indicates a Storehouse associated with one bishop. Bishops' Storehouse indicates a Storehouse affiliated with more than one bishop which I think it's the most appropriate spelling. We've seen it spelled both ways but more often than not it is spelled Bishop's and I believe that is the proper way so that's what I'll try to do.

While Cathy was shopping at the City Creek Shopping Center I walked. I found that one lap around the upper level was about a mile and I got my steps in (7500 +).

Come Follow Me

Romans 4

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

"And after we come out of the waters of baptism, our souls need to be continuously immersed in and saturated with the truth and the light of the Savior’s gospel. Sporadic and shallow dipping in the doctrine of Christ and partial participation in His restored Church cannot produce the spiritual transformation that enables us to walk in a newness of life. Rather, fidelity to covenants, constancy of commitment, and offering our whole soul unto God are required if we are to receive the blessings of eternity."

2nd Nephi Chapter 30

Converted Gentiles will be numbered with the covenant people—Many Lamanites and Jews will believe the word and become delightsome—Israel will be restored and the wicked destroyed. About 559–545 B.C.

Chapter 31

Nephi tells why Christ was baptized—Men must follow Christ, be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, and endure to the end to be saved—Repentance and baptism are the gate to the strait and narrow path—Eternal life comes to those who keep the commandments after baptism. About 559–545 B.C.

It's interesting to contemplate God's plan of salvation. What kind of beings are we that God knows that we need to learn and be guided line upon line and precept upon precept. He gives us the ultimate gift of freedom of choice but guides us and provides the help we need to make good choices. But ultimately we have to choose. And by choosing the right way we grow in joy and happiness. It is almost overwhelming to me how wonderful His plan is.

The Bishops' Storehouse was busy right from the 9 a.m. opening. Saturdays seem to be real busy and understandably so. It's enjoyable because we deal with many different people. Some are very careful to not get too much. Others seem to get pretty excessive amounts. It's all approved by there Bishops but one couple had three cartloads of goods. Seemed like enough food to last months and I can't help wondering where they are going to store the frozen and refrigerated stuff. Others just get small amounts. It's interesting.

After lunch we drove up Hobble Creek and saw some amazing scenery. I made a blog entry about that.

Speaking of blog entries, this Journey app, while good, costs me $30 a year. I recently stumbled across a blog I started years ago, 34m30.blogspot.com, that is still there and I've started copying my journal entries to that blog. It's free and actually easier to use but I need to go back in this Journey app and start moving my entries to the blog. Then I can scrap this system and use obligations the blog from here on.

Romans 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

"Zion and Babylon are incompatible. “No man can serve two masters.” Let’s all remember the Savior’s penetrating question, “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”

Let us demonstrate our love for the Lord through wholehearted, voluntary obedience."

Hobble Creek to US 6

Saturday, after another busy morning at the Bishops' Storehouse, we took a drive up Hobble Creek Canyon out of Springville. We took the South Fork and drive up to the end where it turns into a gravel road. Then continued south over the mountain to where asphalt kicks in again then on to US 6. It was a beautiful drive on a beautiful day and we really enjoyed it.

47 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah

This is the historic church office building. The newer church office building looms behind it.

I was actually set apart for my mission to Sweden in this building back in January 1965, by Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of The Twelve Apostles.

I think this building still houses the offices of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve but, of course, I can't know that for sure.

We are looking forward to the day when the entire two block new Temple Square will be completed along with the surrounding area in downtown SLC. It should be magnificent!

I spent a couple of hours learning more forklift operations.

Today we will serve our Saturday morning shift at the Bishops' Storehouse.

Yesterday, Beth and Karen came over for dinner and we had a nice visit. Karen is looking at jobs in the Santa Monica area and San Diego area of California.

Cathy made a wonderful Taco salad and gave enough to Beth and Karen for a meal or two for them in coming days. Cathy is such a blessing to all who know her.

Come Follow Me

"In time, addictions enslave both the body and the spirit. Full repentance from addiction is best accomplished in this life, while we still have a mortal body to help us.

As children of God, we should not let anything enter the body that might defile it. To allow sensors of sight, touch, or hearing to supply the brain with unclean memories is a sacrilege. We will cherish our chastity and avoid “foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown [us] in destruction and perdition.” We will “flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, [and] meekness”—traits that edify the whole soul.

Who are we? We are children of God. Our potential is unlimited. Our inheritance is sacred. May we always honor that heritage—in every thought and deed"

Lindon Temple progress

We enjoy watching the progress of the construction of the Lindon Temple. It will of course be our temple when completed and we are excited about that.

This temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during general conference in October 2020. We closed on our current home on Friday, October 2nd, and the announcement for this temple came the following Sunday, October 4th. I was pretty excited that we would have a temple right here in Lindon.

The groundbreaking and site dedication occurred April 23rd, 2022. It took a long time for the church to finalize the location and get started but the groundbreaking was on a Saturday and we drove by on Monday, two days later, and the fencing was up and construction equipment was moving in. And here it is just over a year later. I love that progress is being made so expeditiously. I'm not sure but I think toward the end of next year, 2024, we will see it completed.

I served my regular Wednesday morning shift in the temple. I am so glad I have that opportunity. Then Cathy and I walked in Provo Canyon so I got my steps in.

My Omada app had stopped recording my steps so I deleted it and reinstalled it. It works now.

My jaw still hurts a little from my implant surgery but it's getting better each day. My elbow with bursitis is still swollen but getting gradually better.

Romans 1-3

It's interesting that we, mortal humans, seem to automatically lean towards doing evil. We fight. We are nasty to each other. We steal. Become Womanizers, etc. The Gospel and teachings of our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ lead to joy and happiness yet, as a people, we seem to have a hard time getting on that track and staying on that track.

It's all about learning and perfecting and Good gave us A Savior to teach and lead us. He gave us repentance and he gives us prophets and scriptures. We can learn to do what's right.

What a blessing.

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

30 For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have.

Chapter 29

Many Gentiles will reject the Book of Mormon—They will say, We need no more Bible—The Lord speaks to many nations—He will judge the world out of the books which will be written. About 559–545 B.C.

13 And it shall come to pass that the Jews shall have the words of the Nephites, and the Nephites shall have the words of the Jews; and the Nephites and the Jews shall have the words of the lost tribes of Israel; and the lost tribes of Israel shall have the words of the Nephites and the Jews.

14 And it shall come to pass that my people, which are of the house of Israel, shall be gathered home unto the lands of their possessions; and my word also shall be gathered in one. And I will show unto them that fight against my word and against my people, who are of the house of Israel, that I am God, and that I covenanted with Abraham that I would remember his seed forever.

Devin's family at his burial site.

Journal Entry, August 8, 2023

Yesterday was Devin’s funeral. We enjoyed meeting with extended family members but glad it’s over. I already went to the Bishop’s Storehouse for forklift training this morning. They can really use more approved and authorized forklift operators which I will be after another session or two.

I’m waiting for Cathy now at her doctors appointment and at 🕛 I have an appointment to get my new bone grated tooth installed by Doc Holliday. He will surgically implant a stub in my new bone grafted jawbone then my dentist will be able to install my new tooth.

Then we will serve at the storehouse this afternoon.

Come Follow Me

“The consistency of pleas from prophets to reflect on the goodness of God is striking. Our Heavenly Father wants us to recall His and His Beloved Son’s goodness, not for Their own gratification but for the influence such remembrance has on us. By considering Their kindness, our perspective and understanding are enlarged. By reflecting on Their compassion, we become more humble, prayerful, and steadfast.”

Started yesterday with two hours learning to operate the forklift at the Bishops' Storehouse. I'm scheduled for two more hours Friday morning. When I'm certified, I will be able to help in the warehouse by moving pallets of God's so that they can be accessed by the missionaries filling orders.

Then took Cathy to her doctors appointment.

I went to my dental implant procedure and got done in time to serve at the Bishops' Storehouse for our regular shift. Busy day. Doc Holladay implanted a new base for a tooth in my lower left jaw. It is implanted in the bone graft that he created about three months ago. The implant needs about 4 months to heal and grow into my jaw bone and then a new tooth will be agave to it and I should be back to normal shirking after Christmas.

Today is my temple ordinance worker shift at the Mt Timpanogos temple.

August 6th, 2023 (Sunday)

We served at the Bishops Storehouse and had another busy Saturday. The Storehouse is only open from 9-12 on Saturdays and a lot of people, understandably, don't get there until after 11. So that last hour is always very busy.

Then we spent the afternoon getting ready for Kevin and Kim. They came for the funeral (Devin's) and will stay through Monday or Tuesday.

Our basement is unfinished but framed for a future finish. I had already set up what is supposed to be a bedroom down there as a TV room for the grandkids when they come to visit, so it didn't take much to turn it into a bedroom for Kevin and Kim. The TV actually works without being hooked up to cable because it received wifi signals via Bluetooth technology. So they can watch YouTube, Netflix and Amazon plus I have an old interior antenna that I added and it actually picks up a few over-the-air stations. Anyway, they got here and we're pleased with how it all looked.

We all went over to Maddi's where a bunch of family and friends were hanging out and had a nice visit with folks. I had a chance to visit with Maddi and she is outwardly holding up very well. Lots of support for now. Hopefully that will continue as she now joins the ranks of widows. There are opportunities right in our own families to care for others. I hope I never forget that.

Beth is having some family over today at 4 before the viewing for more visits and some "bad" food.

Memories

Craig sent me this photo taken a few years ago. It is, besides me, my brother Bob, Devin and Craig and was taken at Beth's home. It obviously is a memory of Craig and me and our two now deceased little brothers.

Journal Entry August 5, 2023

I went to breakfast at Magleby's with Craig. We had a nice visit and he shared stone sweet experiences he has had in connection with Devin's passing and other things. Craig has been a very positive part of my life for years and, of course, I've been his uncle since he came into this world. He has been more like a brother for a long time now and even more so now.

Cathy and I walked for three miles in Provo Canyon. It's too bad there aren't other places to walk but,if course, there are. It's that Provo Canyon at Vivian Park is so much cooler during these hot summer days that it's a lot easier to enjoy walking there.

We went to dinner at Mi Ranchito with Ron Mcdonald and his new wife, Janet. She has been a great addition to his life and made him, in my opinion, an even better man than he was. The restaurant was terribly noisy on this Friday night.

We'll be at the Bishops Storehouse this morning for our mission duties.

Come Follow Me

Acts 28:27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

"The importance of having a sense of the sacred is simply this—if one does not appreciate holy things, he will lose them. Absent a feeling of reverence, he will grow increasingly casual in attitude and lax in conduct. He will drift from the moorings that his covenants with God could provide. His feeling of accountability to God will diminish and then be forgotten. Thereafter, he will care only about his own comfort and satisfying his uncontrolled appetites. Finally, he will come to despise sacred things, even God, and then he will despise himself.

On the other hand, with a sense of the sacred, one grows in understanding and truth. The Holy Spirit becomes his frequent and then constant companion. More and more he will stand in holy places and be entrusted with holy things. Just the opposite of cynicism and despair, his end is eternal life."

D. Todd Christofferson was a member of the Presidency of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when this fireside address was given on 7 November 2004.

This talk by Elder Christofferson is outstanding. It is rather lengthy but I highly recommend it to anyone reading this.

Jake went to girls camp with Erica. He is a very good father in many ways. He used to keep his hair cut very short and was always encouraged by his mom and his wife to let it grow because they love the curls. Well, now he has let it grow, along with his beard and boy! are there curls!

Meredith like the beard and that's the deciding factor for now. Anyway, some of the young women at camp, maybe teasingly, decided they should braid his beard and this is the result. Above all, he is a very good man.

Journal Entry, 8/4/2023

Had a visit with Dr Welch re my elbow. He prescribed some more antibiotics and had some lab work done. I actually feel a little better this morning.

Going to breakfast with Craig. I'm kinda his only brother left and i I had the impression that it would be good for him to get away from all the doings of Devin's passing and just kick back with me for a few. He enthusiastically agreed so we're going to Magleby's by his house for breakfast.

Yesterday, Cathy and I were at Chick-Fil-A having breakfast when Beth called. She and Dianna and Karen, all at Beth's house, wondered if we would bring them breakfast which we enthusiastically did. We had a very nice visit.

It's interesting and really not surprising that a funeral of a loved one brings people together in a way that is closer and more spiritual than almost anything else I can think of.

I just know that Devin would be pleased... Actually probably is pleased.

It's been almost exactly a year since his dad, Bruce, passed and I'll bet they are very close right now.

Come Follow Me

Acts 28:8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

"...I will concentrate my remarks on healing blessings involving the power of the priesthood. We have this priesthood power, and we should all be prepared to use it properly. Current increases in natural disasters and financial challenges show that we will need this power even more in the future than in the past.

Many scriptures teach that the servants of the Lord “shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Miracles happen when the authority of the priesthood is used to bless the sick. I have experienced these miracles. As a boy and as a man I have seen healings as miraculous as any recorded in the scriptures, and so have many of you."

Elder Dallin H. Oaks, April 2010

D&C 59:20 And it pleaseth God that he hath given all these things unto man; for unto this end were they made to be used, with judgment, not to excess, neither by extortion.

21 And in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments.

Not long ago, Meredith took Jake to the hospital because he was suffering from pain and discomfort throughout and she called Cathy and asked if we would come and give him a blessing. It was on a Saturday between w lurking at the Bishops Storehouse and my temple assignment but we made arrangements to go straight to the hospital and there I gave Jake a blessing. After a short visit we left and I went to the temple. Jake was released and went home and recovered his health.

Nothing dramatic. It could have happened anyway. But I do believe that Heavenly Father blessed him and that his recovery was aid Ed by that blessing.

Enjoyed serving in the temple in the morning. My memory is deserting me again. Either that or I didn't do much yesterday. Art Sandgren stopped by to return some dishes from when we took him some food. He's been pretty sick with a sinus infection.

I guess I'm at a point where discussing various maladies is the most interesting thing.

Today I get to see Dr Welch regarding my elbow... Still swollen and still painful.

Acts 25:7 And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.

8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cæsar, have I offended any thing at all.

Paul is apparently a very bright man and while preaching the Gospel, carefully obeyed the law. Still some, mostly Saducee Jews, we're upset with his teachings but couldn't legally do much.

"The Apostle Paul also bore fervent testimony of Christ and converted many through his missionary labors. He did not shrink in bearing his testimony before King Agrippa. So mighty were his words that even this influential representative of the Roman Empire was moved to exclaim, “Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.”

The lesson, I believe, is clear: having a testimony alone is not enough. In fact, when we are truly converted, we cannot be restrained from testifying. And as it was with Apostles and faithful members of old, so is it also our privilege, our duty, and our solemn obligation to “declare the things which [we] know to be true”...

To bear testimony is “to bear witness by the power of the Holy Ghost; to make a solemn declaration of truth based on personal knowledge or belief." Clear declaration of truth makes a difference in people’s lives. That is what changes hearts. That is what the Holy Ghost can confirm in the hearts of God’s children."

Elder M. Russell Ballard, October 2004

Devin Merrill, August 2nd 2021

Devin Francis Merrill
passed away suddenly yesterday morning at around 3 a. m.

He would have been 57 years old on his birthday this coming Saturday.

He and his brother, Craig, and I had breakfast together last Monday on the 24th of July. He seemed just fine then... His normal, friendly, thoughtful self.

The photo attached here, taken by Craig, was at the Corner Bakery in Orem on July 3rd where we had taken their mother (my sister), Beth, to celebrate her 83rd birthday. My wife, Cathy, who is basically like a real sister to Beth, also was with us.

Fond memories. We will all miss Devin a lot.
