Daily scripture study is very important. This especially includes current prophets and Apostles and other general authorities.

Ezra 7:10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

Elder Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has taught that if we “are acquainted with the revelations, there is no question—personal or social or political or occupational—that need go unanswered. … Therein we find principles of truth that will resolve every confusion and every problem and every dilemma that will face the human family or any individual in it.”

A regular and consistent pattern of scripture study is what will be most helpful. Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said: “A few little flowers will spring up briefly in the dry gully through which torrents of water pass occasionally. But it is steady streams that bring thick and needed crops. In the agriculture of the soul that has to do with nurturing attributes, flash floods are no substitute for regular irrigation.”

Ezra and the Jews of his day provide a worthy model showing why and how we should study and teach the scriptures. May we in reverence come to spiritual attention each time we open their pages. May we rely on the words of living apostles and prophets to help us understand their true meanings. May we celebrate with “very great gladness” that the study of the scriptures is our privilege. And may we make and keep our sacred covenants with great diligence and faith, using the scriptures as our guide.

We have been pretty sick for the last two weeks. Mainly severe coughing and gagging and feeling tired. I think we are both finally feeling better and will be able to serve in the Bishops Storehouse this afternoon. I'm not sure about Cathy because she has some additional ailments. We went to three doctors yesterday and she got prescriptions that we hope will help.

I'm not going into details but she is a little more frail than I and as she age more and more problems arise for her. When she's healthy she's amazing and serves others probably more than she should. But overall she is just wonderful and a great blessing to me and our family.

Ezra 1:5 Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. 6 And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.

"[T]he Lord repeatedly says in the scriptures, “Be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord.” Let me tell you what that phrase “bear the vessels of the Lord” means. Anciently it had at least two meanings...

The first refers to the recovery and return to Jerusalem of various temple implements...[T]he Lord reminded those early brethren of the sanctity of anything related to the temple. Therefore as they carried back to their homeland these various bowls, basins, cups, and other vessels, they themselves were to be as clean as the ceremonial instruments they bore.

The second meaning is related to the first. Similar bowls and implements were used for ritual purification in the home. The Apostle Paul [wrote]: “If a man … purge himself [of unworthiness], he shall be a vessel … sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.”...

In both of these biblical accounts the message is that...we are also to be a sanctified instrument...Partly because of what we are to do but more importantly because of what we are to be, the prophets and apostles tell us to “flee … youthful lusts” and “call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” They tell us to be clean."

As my study of the Old Testament continues, I'm finding that I need to look more deeply into the teachings of our current Apostles rather than simply duplicating quotes from the lesson. Today was no exception. Elder Caussé gave a great talk in April that is so relavent to today that I took an except from that talk as my Come Follow Me to thought for today. Read it below and I think you will see what I mean.

Some time ago, a journalist asked me this simple yet profound question: “What do you know now, after being ordained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles?” My response came instantly: “I have learned that I can love even more.”

Over the past few months, my wife, Valérie, and I have been deeply moved by the outpouring of love and prayers from Saints around the world. Through you, my dear brothers and sisters, we have felt the love of God more intensely than ever before in our lives. And in response, our own ability to love has grown in ways we never expected.

Christlike love grows and multiplies as it is shared. When we show others the pure love of Christ, they come to recognize more fully how deeply the Lord cares for them—and, in turn, their own capacity to love is enlarged and strengthened.

May we follow the Lord’s perfect example and learn to love all and to love each, just as He does.

As I wrote yesterday, I've got a cold and slept only a little better last night. Today will be mostly rest for me. Old age sometimes includes uncomfortable difficulties. Fortunately I'm blessed in so many ways that I can just relax and try to get well.

I read a talk today by Elder Donald L. Hallstrom of The Seventy that included this which sat well with me:

"Today I testify of miracles. Being a child of God is a miracle. Receiving a body in His image and likeness is a miracle. The gift of a Savior is a miracle. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is a miracle. The potential for eternal life is a miracle.

While it is good to pray for and work for physical protection and healing during our mortal existence, our supreme focus should be on the spiritual miracles that are available to all of God’s children."

We're going to take Jake and his family to breakfast at the Avenue Bakery in American Fork to help celebrate his birthday.

The heat has become very very high outside. Salt Lake City had a high of 109 degrees a couple of days ago and it is still hot. It's been over 100 for the past few days. Fortunately we have a good air conditioner in our home so we're quite comfortable. Our car is running very well as well and the AC is great in the car. So we're not adversely affected by the temperature outside.

We have had two plastic vents on the side of our house damaged by birds (I believe). I guess it's not a big deal but it has bothered me. They are coming out of the attic area and I don't have the ability to get up high enough to them to see about replacing them. So I was talking to my neighbor, Shawn Reeves, and he has a ladder and Jake said he would come over and replace the vents. So I checked on Amazon and found two vents made of aluminum that seemed like the right size. So yesterday morning I got together with Shawn and Jake and the vents are now replaced.

I love our house and it was new when we moved in and we want to keep it in good shape. We are blessed with a great LAPD pension so we can afford to keep up whatever repairs or maintenance that is needed.

I will here state emphatically that joining LAPD back in 1974 was a great blessing. I truly believe my angels were with me. I joined because it had a great retirement program that actually got better while I was there. I met and married Cathy which has been a wonderful blessing. And we picked up lifetime medical insurance coverage that has been amazing. So we are blessed.

From King Hezekiah...we can learn a very positive lesson on leadership: circumstances do not always need to remain the same. Leaders can make a difference! Faith in the Lord and high expectations can bring about a mighty change of heart among an entire people.

"What other priorities are being “served” ahead of God by persons—even religious persons—in our day? Consider these possibilities, all common in our world:

    Political correctness

    Career aspirations

    Material possessions

    Recreational pursuits

    Power, prominence, and prestige

If none of these examples seems to apply to any one of us, we can probably suggest others that do. The principle is more important than individual examples. The principle is not whether we have other priorities. The Questions to Discuss posed by the second commandment is “What is our ultimate priority?” Are we serving priorities or gods ahead of the God we profess to worship? Have we forgotten to follow the Savior who taught that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments? If so, our priorities have been turned upside down by the spiritual apathy and undisciplined appetites so common in our day."

"Elijah inquired of Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for thee.” Elisha said, “I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.”  He could not have asked for anything greater.

Elder Joseph Fielding Smith has written: “The Spirit of God speaking to the spirit of man has power to impart truth. … Through the Holy Ghost the truth is woven into the very fibre and sinews of the body so that it cannot be forgotten.”  

With our confirmation as Church members, the door is opened for us to pursue this heavenly endowment. This should be an urgent and lifelong quest."

Some would like to live in that eternal city and still keep a “summer home” in Babylon. If we are not consciously and deliberately choosing the kingdom of God, we will in fact be moving backwards as the kingdom of God moves forward “boldly, nobly, and independent.” Choosing which way we face will determine our blessings or our burdens."

Serving in the temple this morning. 

Craig Merrill stopped by for a visit yesterday. That was very enjoyable.

Went to Costco yesterday to get two new tires for the Prius. While there, Jake visited with me for awhile. He was also there to get new tires for his van.

So a good day.

Today we are going to see a reportedly good movie about George Washington and then go out to lunch with my sister, Beth. So looking forward to an exceptional day.

 "Imagine for a moment the difficulty of what the prophet was asking a starving mother to do. Certainly, God Himself could have provided food for His faithful servant. But, acting in the name of the Lord, Elijah did as directed, which was to ask a beloved daughter of God to sacrifice that which she had in order to sustain the prophet.

…In a world threatened by a famine of righteousness and spiritual starvation, we have been commanded to sustain the prophet. As we give heed to, uphold, and affirm prophetic word, we witness that we have the faith to humbly submit to the will, the wisdom, and the timing of the Lord."

13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

14 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth.

"It is interesting that Elijah is not told to go to Zarephath until the widow and her son are at the point of death. It is at this extreme moment—facing starvation—that her faith will be tested…

Now doesn’t that sound selfish, asking not just for the first piece, but possibly the only piece? Didn’t our parents teach us to let other people go first and especially for a gentleman to let a lady go first, let alone a starving widow? Her choice—does she eat, or does she sacrifice her last meal and hasten death?…[C]ould she sacrifice the food meant for her starving son?

Elijah understood…that blessings come after the trial of our faith. He wasn’t being selfish…Elijah was there to give, not to take…

One reason the Lord illustrates doctrines with the most extreme circumstances is to eliminate excuses. If the Lord expects even the poorest widow to pay her mite, where does that leave all others who find that it is not convenient or easy to sacrifice?"
