Journal Entry

I'm still experiencing pain which keeps me at bay during the day and also keeps me from sleeping well at night. I woke this morning early in pain and went again into our TV room to rest in my wonderful recliner chair. Yesterday we drove out to the Kinlands in Riverton. It's a very nice farm store run by people who have real nice taste and style. Cathy loves shopping there and I even like to wander around and browse in there.

Come Follow Me

Alma 16:16 And there was no inequality among them; the Lord did pour out his Spirit on all the face of the land to prepare the minds of the children of men, or to prepare their hearts to receive the word which should be taught among them at the time of his coming—

17 That they might not be hardened against the word, that they might not be unbelieving, and go on to destruction, but that they might receive the word with joy, and as a branch be grafted into the true vine, that they might enter into the rest of the Lord their God.

"The condition of our hearts directly affects our sensitivity to spiritual things. Let us make it a part of our everyday striving to open our hearts to the Spirit. Since we are the guardians of our hearts, we can choose to do so. We choose what we let in or hold out. Fortunately the Lord is anxious to help us choose wisely."

Elder Gerald N. Lund Of the Seventy, April 2008

Think of all the reasons people might give for not sharing the gospel: “I don’t know enough” or “I’m not sure they would be interested” or maybe “I’m afraid I’ll be rejected.” Maybe you’ve found yourself thinking similar things at times. The Nephites had an additional reason for not sharing the gospel with the Lamanites: they were described as “a wild and a hardened and a ferocious people; a people who delighted in murdering the Nephites” (Alma 17:14; see also Alma 26:23–25). But the sons of Mosiah had an even stronger reason why they felt they must share the gospel with the Lamanites: “They were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish” (Mosiah 28:3). This love that inspired Ammon and his brothers can also inspire you to share the gospel with your family, friends, and acquaintances—even those who may not seem likely to accept it.

Another day of pain and recovery. It feels like my body is gradually healing but the emphasis needs to be on gradually. I still need pain meds in order to get through the day in some degree of comfort and I still have a hard time sleeping for more than five hours because of pain

Art Sandgren came over yesterday and he and Cathy and I enjoyed a nice visit.

Alma 15:18 Now as I said, Alma having seen all these things, therefore he took Amulek and came over to the land of Zarahemla, and took him to his own house, and did administer unto him in his tribulations, and strengthened him in the Lord.

"My fellow disciples of Christ, let us not underestimate the marvelous work the Lord is doing through us, His Church, despite our shortcomings. Sometimes we are givers and sometimes we are receivers, but we are all one family in Christ. His Church is the structure He has given to guide and bless us as we worship Him and serve each other.

"The Church is more than the buildings and the ecclesiastical structure; the Church is us, the members, with Christ at the head and the prophet as His mouthpiece."

Another day of pain. I tend to wake up each night about five hours after I go to bed because of pain. Then I struggle to try to go back to sleep but that doesn't seem to help so I get up and go to my Lazy Boy recliner and get little snippets of sleep while reading or writing in this journal. I try to get some walking in and exercise with my stretch bands down in the basement but otherwise it's TV or reading.

Last night Donald Trump and President Biden had their first televised debate about which of them should become president of the United States. I think it should be Trump rather than Biden but we'll see. Of the two, Trump is far more likely to perpetuate the values that I think should make a good President. He's more likely to uphold the U.S. Constitution and that is what I would like to see in a President.

Come Follow Me

Alma 14:28 And Alma and Amulek came forth out of the prison, and they were not hurt; for the Lord had granted unto them power, according to their faith which was in Christ. And they straightway came forth out of the prison; and they were loosed from their bands; and the prison had fallen to the earth, and every soul within the walls thereof, save it were Alma and Amulek, was slain; and they straightway came forth into the city.

"Alma and Amulek were delivered from prison in Ammonihah in answer to their plea, and their persecutors were slain. Earlier, however, these same persecutors had cast believing women and their children into a raging fire. Alma...was constrained by the Spirit not to exercise the power of God to “save them from the flames,” that they might be received up to God in glory…
In the end, it is the blessing of a close and abiding relationship with the Father and the Son that we seek. It makes all the difference and is everlastingly worth the cost. We will testify with Paul “that the sufferings of this present [mortal] time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

I'm still in pain but less than previously. I believe I'm gradually heading towards being pain - free but haven't got there yet.

Didn't do much again yesterday. We walked some at the Lindon city park near the civic center. It seems like a good thing to do.

Beth and Karen came over for dinner at Cathy's invitation. We enjoyed a nice visit.

Alma 13: 29 Having faith on the Lord; having a hope that ye shall receive eternal life; having the love of God always in your hearts, that ye may be lifted up at the last day and enter into his rest.

"Alma emphasized the importance of “having the love of God always in your hearts." Charity is that love. Charity is a gift of the Spirit, for “all things which are good cometh of God." And this gift is multiplied as it is used.

Both the giver and the receiver are blessed. For charity purifies and sanctifies all it touches, and “whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him."

The greatest acts of charity come from giving of yourself and receiving expressions of charity with humility as well."

I was in more pain yesterday than the previous day... Not sure why but I went to bed early and slept pretty well last night. My pain level seems better today so far. I think I need to get more exercise.

Cathy has been consistently working on the front garden and her work is reaping dividends. In person, our garden looks even better than this photo depicts. She enjoys having a nice garden and works hard to make it happen.

It's been six days since my surgery and I'm experiencing far less pain today than yesterday. I thinking walking and stair climbing are activities I should resume. Cathy urges caution so I will tell her I'll be careful while walking and climbing stairs 😜.

Alma 13: 28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering;

"I once owned a pen that I loved to use during my career as an airline captain. By simply turning the shaft, I could choose one of four colors. The pen did not complain when I wanted to use red ink instead of blue. It did not say to me, “I would rather not write after 10:00 p.m., in heavy fog, or at high altitudes.” The pen did not say, “Use me only for important documents, not for the daily mundane tasks.” With greatest reliability it performed every task I needed, no matter how important or insignificant. It was always ready to serve.

In a similar way we are tools in the hands of God. When our heart is in the right place, we do not complain that our assigned task is unworthy of our abilities. We gladly serve wherever we are asked. When we do this, the Lord can use us in ways beyond our understanding to accomplish His work."

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, October 2010

"The Christlike quality of meekness often is misunderstood in our contemporary world. Meekness is strong, not weak; active, not passive; courageous, not timid; restrained, not excessive; modest, not self-aggrandizing; and gracious, not brash. A meek person is not easily provoked, pretentious, or overbearing and readily acknowledges the accomplishments of others."

I went to Dr. Kimball's office and saw an assistant. She looked at my incision and said it looked good. She removed the existing dressing and determined that no dressing is needed.
I'm still in pain but it seems to be less severe. Still no fun though. They gave me a new Tramadol prescription that should get me through the worst of the pain.
The main thing I have to do now is get up and walk every 30 - 45 minutes. No stairs "for the first few days."

Watching TV
Writing in my journal
Reading
Visiting our playing games with Cathy
Walking in the house unless Cathy is with me - which she will be when she can. The weather is often too warm to walk outside but we both can enjoy walking in one of the shopping malls

I'm to see Dr Kimball this morning. I accidentally snagged the tube from my incision to the collector on something yesterday and it, the tube, got pulled out of my incision. I didn't take any action other than to have Cathy check my incision area to see if it was bleeding or if there was any other problem and there did not seem to be. Anyway, I hope Dr Kimball might put on a new dressing and provide instruction for moving forward.

We didn't do much yesterday so we're hoping to maybe go to breakfast on the way to Dr kimball's office.

I have pain in my right hip and hope to get that addressed.

There's not much going on for us right now other than recovering from surgery. Cathy is taking good care of me and I really appreciate her.

Rejoice in the Gift of Priesthood Keys, By President Russell M. Nelson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

"Priesthood keys govern how the priesthood of God may be used to bring about the Lord’s purposes and bless all who accept the restored gospel."

Alma 13: 7 This high priesthood being after the order of his Son, which order was from the foundation of the world; or in other words, being without beginning of days or end of years, being prepared from eternity to all eternity, according to his foreknowledge of all things.

"The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that “the Priesthood is an everlasting principle, and existed with God from eternity, and will to eternity, without beginning of days or end of years”…

Scriptures certify that the priesthood has continued and will continue “through the lineage of [the] fathers.” Ordination to its offices has timeless implication as well. Tenure in priesthood office may extend into postmortal realms…Promised blessings of the priesthood extend to men, women, and children throughout the world and may endure forever."

I finally got released from the hospital yesterday but I had to keep my wound drain in place and that's a little difficult.

It's about six inches in diameter and clips to my outer clothing "for convenience".

It's purpose is to capture surgery-related blood and keep that blood from creating a harmful hematoma inside me. And that's, of course, a good thing.
Then I'm to report to Dr Kimball's office on Monday (tomorrow) morning and, if there is no bleeding, get it removed. Not convenient but I understand the importance.

The new issue is that I don't seem to be bleeding any longer and I'm wondering if I can get Dr  Kimball to go along with letting me remove the drain and clamp off the tube which would be a little more comfortable for me. I think I'll text him a little later (it's five a.m. now). Maybe he'll approve that and maybe not.

In the meantime I feel like my pain is under control and that I'm healing.

Cathy suggested that I apply for a medical leave from the temple rather than trying to get substitutes. I didn't know that was a possibility but she had talked to Art Sandgren who does know, he suggested it and I think it's a grand idea. I've left the early shift already so they won't miss me and I haven't started the 10 a.m. shift yet so they shouldn't miss me either so the medical leave idea really makes sense.

Jake has been very helpful through all of this.

Alma 12: 14 For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence.

"We know from modern revelation that we will be judged for our desires as well as our actions and that even our thoughts will condemn us. We must not “procrastinate the day of [our] repentance” until death, Amulek taught, because the same spirit that has possessed our body in this life—whether the Lord’s or the devil’s—“will have power to possess [our] body in that eternal world.” Our Savior has the power and stands ready to cleanse us from evil. Now is the time to seek His help to repent of our wicked or unseemly desires and thoughts to be clean and prepared to stand before God at the Final Judgment."
President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency, April 2019

"The messages shared from this pulpit are communicated in words. They are given in English and translated into nearly 100 different languages. Always the base is the same. Words. And words matter a lot. Let me say that again. Words matter!

"They are the bedrock of how we connect; they represent our beliefs, morals, and perspectives. Sometimes we speak words; other times we listen. Words set a tone. They voice our thoughts, feelings, and experiences, for good or bad.

"Unfortunately, words can be thoughtless, hasty, and hurtful. Once said, we cannot take them back. They can wound, punish, cut down, and even lead to destructive actions. They can weigh heavily on us.

"On the other hand, words can celebrate victory, be hopeful and encouraging. They can prompt us to rethink, reboot, and redirect our course. Words can open our minds to truth."
Elder Ronald A. Rasband Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, April 2024

Last night was my second night here in the hospital because my incision needs to drain. It wasn't quite drained enough yesterday so I had to stay an additional night. There is a tube that comes out of my incision and it drains into this device called a Closed Wound Suction Evacuator. Apparently when this device stops filling up with blood, then that's a good thing and I get to go home. It's still draining some, though, and I truly hope it's drained enough. Last night I only slept for 3 hours and 19 minutes. Not much sleep. And I only slept 4 hours and 13 minutes the previous night according to the sleep app on my iphone which is pretty accurate. Not enough sleep. When you stay in a hospital overnight they seem to time their visits to your bedside so that you never sleep more than about 45 minutes in a row.

Alma 12:10 And therefore, he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full.

11 And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word until they know nothing concerning his mysteries; and then they are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction. Now this is what is meant by the chains of hell.

"…You can have your own testimony if you do what is necessary to obtain one…

First, don’t harden your heart. Seek to know. In other words, have an intense, consuming desire to know. Give place for a seed to be planted in your heart. And if you do this, do you know what the promise is? Alma tells us, “He that will not harden his heart, to him is given … to know the mysteries of God.”

This is the view from my hospital bed in room 708, at Utah Valley Hospital. It's Mt. Timpanogos and it's a lot more spectacular in person and it's a very pleasant and uplifting  view.

I had a typical night in the hospital... A little sleep while constantly being interrupted by staff doing their duty. The main thing now is that my incision has a drain tube to relieve the post-op bleeding. If that looks OK with Dr Kimball I will possibly be able to go home today. Hope!

They have good food here. I just ordered a "Wasatch omelet" and a bowl of overnight oats. So more later.

Alma 11: 44 Now, this restoration shall come to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, both the wicked and the righteous; and even there shall not so much as a hair of their heads be lost; but every thing shall be restored to its perfect frame, as it is now, or in the body, and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God, to be judged according to their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil.

"Resurrection makes it possible for a person’s spirit and body to be united again, only this time that body will be immortal and perfect—not subject to pain, disease, or other problems.

After resurrection, the spirit will never again be separated from the body because the Savior’s Resurrection brought total victory over death. In order to obtain our eternal destiny, we need to have this immortal soul—a spirit and body—united forever. With spirit and immortal body inseparably connected, we can “receive a fulness of joy.” In fact, without the Resurrection we could never receive a fulness of joy but would be miserable forever."

Elder Paul V. Johnson Of the Seventy, April 2016

Alma 34:32 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.

33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

I am to be at the hospital at 0515 this morning. Cathy, of course, will sort of cheerfully accompany me. The good thing is that I suppose my procedure will be among the first lobes of the day. But, I'm told, I will still need to spend at least tonight in the hospital. With any kind of luck that will be all and I will be able to come home tomorrow. We will see.

Yesterday, Kevin did some very useful things to our yard. He fixed up our side path by cleaning up the edges and other dilapidated features. I'll try to remember to write more about that later and add a photo or two.

We tried to plant the seed of using Ozempic with Jake. That really helped me when I started taking Mounjaro, and when that became hard to get, Ozempic, for my diabetes. Mounjaro and Ozempic are also very effective with helping people lose weight - mainly by reducing appetites. I'm back on Mounjaro now but Ozempic seems to be more readily available right now... Especially for weight loss purposes.

"God will always love us, but He cannot save us in our sins. Remember the words of Amulek to Zeezrom that the Savior would not save His people in their sins but from their sins, the reason being that with sin we are unclean and “no unclean thing can inherit the kingdom of heaven” or dwell in God’s presence.

Amulek:

Alma 10: 5 Nevertheless, after all this, I never have known much of the ways of the Lord, and his mysteries and marvelous power. I said I never had known much of these things; but behold, I mistake, for I have seen much of his mysteries and his marvelous power; yea, even in the preservation of the lives of this people.

6 Nevertheless, I did harden my heart, for I was called many times and I would not hear; therefore I knew concerning these things, yet I would not know; therefore I went on rebelling against God, in the wickedness of my heart, even until the fourth day of this seventh month, which is in the tenth year of the reign of the judges.

"Some of these otherwise honorable members mistakenly regard the Church as an institution, but not as a kingdom. They know the doctrines of the kingdom, but more as a matter of recitation than of real comprehension.

Casual members are usually very busy with the cares and the things of the world—much as honorable Amulek once was. Called many times, he would not hear. He really knew concerning the truths of the gospel, but Amulek would not acknowledge that he knew.

Eighteen years ago from this same pulpit, I pled with those who stood indecisively on the “porch” of the Church to come fully inside. (See Ensign, Nov. 1974, pp. 12–13.) Today my plea is to those members already inside but whose discipleship is casual, individuals whom we love, whose gifts and talents are much needed in building the kingdom!

Any call for greater consecration is, of course, really a call to all of us. But these remarks are not primarily for those who are steadily striving and who genuinely seek to keep God’s commandments and yet sometimes fall short. (See D&C 46:9.) Nor is this primarily for those few in deliberate noncompliance, including some who cast off on intellectual and behavioral bungee cords in search of new sensations, only to be jerked about by the old heresies and the old sins.

Instead, these comments are for the essentially “honorable” members who are skimming over the surface instead of deepening their discipleship and who are casually engaged rather than “anxiously engaged.” (D&C 76:75; D&C 58:27.) Though nominal in their participation, their reservations and hesitations inevitably show through. They may even pass through our holy temples, but, alas, they do not let the holy temples pass through them."

Alma 9: 26 And not many days hence the Son of God shall come in his glory; and his glory shall be the glory of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, equity, and truth, full of patience, mercy, and long-suffering, quick to hear the cries of his people and to answer their prayers.

"When the Lord or His servants say things like, “Not many days hence” or “The time is not far distant,” it can literally mean a lifetime or longer. His time, and frequently His timing, is different from ours. Patience is key. Without it, we can neither develop nor demonstrate faith in God unto life and salvation. But…even while we are patiently waiting upon the Lord, there are certain blessings that come to us immediately."

Elder Kyle S. McKay Of the Seventy, April 2019

"My brothers and sisters, when we truly are in awe of Jesus Christ and His gospel, we are happier, we have more enthusiasm for God’s work, and we recognize the Lord’s hand in all things. Additionally, our study of God’s words is more meaningful; our prayers, more intentional; our worship, more reverent; our service in God’s kingdom, more diligent. All these actions contribute to the Holy Spirit’s influence being more frequent in our lives. Thus, our testimony of the Savior and His gospel will be strengthened, we will keep Christ alive in us, and we will live our lives “rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, … abounding therein with thanksgiving.” When we live in this way, we become more spiritually resilient and protected against falling into the trap of spiritual apathy."

24 And see that ye have faith, hope, and charity, and then ye will always abound in good works.

"To open the windows of heaven, we must conform our will to God’s will. Diligent, enduring obedience to God’s laws is the key that opens the windows of heaven. Obedience enables us to be receptive to the mind and will of the Lord…"and the willing and obedient” are those who receive the blessings of revelation through the open windows of heaven."

God’s work will not fail. But our efforts to help with His work sometimes seem to fail—at least, we may not immediately see the outcomes we hope for. We might feel a little like Alma when he preached the gospel in Ammonihah—rejected, spit on, and cast out. Yet when an angel instructed him to go back and try again, Alma courageously “returned speedily” (Alma 8:18), and God prepared the way before him. Not only did He provide Alma with food to eat and a place to stay, but He also prepared Amulek, who became a fellow laborer, a fierce defender of the gospel, and a faithful friend. When we face setbacks and disappointments as we serve in the Lord’s kingdom, we can remember how God supported and led Alma, and we can trust that God will support and lead us too, even in difficult circumstances.

I can't imagine being visited by an angel of God (or somehow receiving other Heavenly guidance) and not doing everything I'm instructed to do.

"You might ask, “How can I be a missionary without a name badge?” Or we tell ourselves, “The full-time missionaries are set apart to do this work. I would like to help but perhaps later when life has calmed down a bit.”

Brothers and sisters, it is much simpler than that! Gratefully, the Savior’s great commission can be accomplished through simple, easily understandable principles taught to each of us from childhood: love, share, and invite."

I have several rings that I've worn over the years but all are now too large and easily slip off. While browsing a church related publication the other day I noticed in an ad for Deseret Book some nice rings that were affordably priced. So Cathy and I decided to drive to the large Deseret Book store near Temple Square and see what they had. I found a very nice and stylish CTR ring that Cathy and I both liked and so I got it.

Afterward we walked around temple square to see how things were progressing there. I took this photo of the church office building. The temple is coming along but will be another two years before it's done. When it's all over,we believe that temple square will be amazingly beautiful. Looking forward to that.

Then we decided to have lunch at the Trellis Cafe at Thanksgiving Point on the way home. They make arguably one of the best hamburgers available. They use Wagyu beef from Japan and it is as good as it looks.

Come Follow Me

When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities. [Ezra Taft Benson, CR, April 1988, 3; or “The Great Commandment—Love the Lord,” Ensign, May 1988, 4]

Alma 7: 23 And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive.

Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 1995

Repentance, beautifully Explained

In the New Testament, repentance comes from the word metanoeó, from the words metá and noeó, meaning “to change one’s mind or purpose.”19 Isn’t that interesting?

Every time we turn more to Christ, we are repenting—we are following Him.20 When we sincerely pray to the Father, in a very real sense we are repenting. When we read the scriptures and ponder them, we are repenting. As we make changes because of what we are learning about Christ and His gospel, we are repenting. When we do things that make us better, kinder, gentler, more sensitive, more spiritual, more virtuous, and truer, we are repenting. Whenever we choose the better path, we are repenting. Though we all repent of things that are sinful in our lives, most of our repenting comes from hearing His words and doing them—from turning to Him. This builds our foundation, and we want that foundation to be as big and as wide and as deep and as sturdy as possible.

11 And I would that ye should remember also, that this is the name that I said I should give unto you that never should be blotted out, except it be through transgression; therefore, take heed that ye do not transgress, that the name be not blotted out of your hearts.

15 Therefore, I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his, that you may be brought to heaven, that ye may have everlasting salvation and eternal life, through the wisdom, and power, and justice, and mercy of him who created all things, in heaven and in earth, who is God above all.

We got our new shock absorbers and now Cathy mentioned the wheels on the car are kind of beat up an she's right. Both of us have scraped curbs while making turns and our wheels are pretty scratched. I think they are still completely functional but it would be nice to have new ones. Then the car would truly be like new... until we think of something else. But it is mechanically very good now and should easily last us another three or four years and more.

I'm still in significant pain. I was able to walk my 7500 + steps again but it's hard. Really looking forward to getting part the surgery and being pain-free again.

Come Follow Me

Alma 7: 11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.

12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.

13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me.

"Let me quote the marvelous James E. Talmage on this matter:

Into every adult human life come experiences like unto the battling of the storm-tossed voyagers with contrary winds and threatening seas; ofttimes the night of struggle and danger is far advanced before succor appears; and then, too frequently the saving aid is mistaken for a greater terror. [But,] as came unto [these disciples] in the midst of the turbulent waters, so comes to all who toil in faith, the voice of the Deliverer—“It is I; be not afraid.” [Jesus the Christ, 3d ed. (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1916), p. 337]

Brother Talmage used there the word succor. Do you know its meaning? It is used often in the scriptures to describe Christ’s care for and attention to us. It means literally “to run to.” What a magnificent way to describe the Savior’s urgent effort in our behalf. Even as he calls us to come to him and follow him, he is unfailingly running to help us."

30 But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not.

Still in pain.

Were going to get our rear shock absorbers on our car replaced this morning. At that point the car will be as close to new condition as we can make it. My goal is to get another 100,000 miles out of it and I truly believe that is possible. I'm starting to hope that this might be the last car we ever own. I'm told that a third 100,000 miles is not unreasonable so we'll see. By then I should be well into my 80s.

Jake came over yesterday and helped with a couple of heavy lifting projects. He's very pleasant about helping us and we truly appreciate that.

Come Follow Me

Alma 5: 53 And now my beloved brethren, I say unto you, can ye withstand these sayings; yea, can ye lay aside these things, and trample the Holy One under your feet; yea, can ye be puffed up in the pride of your hearts; yea, will ye still persist in the wearing of costly apparel and setting your hearts upon the vain things of the world, upon your riches?

54 Yea, will ye persist in supposing that ye are better one than another; yea, will ye persist in the persecution of your brethren, who humble themselves and do walk after the holy order of God, wherewith they have been brought into this church, having been sanctified by the Holy Spirit, and they do bring forth works which are meet for repentance—

55 Yea, and will you persist in turning your backs upon the poor, and the needy, and in withholding your substance from them?

"...[N]either riches nor lineage nor any other privileges of birth should cause us to believe that we are “better one than another.”

I served my last official assignment in the early shift at the temple yesterday with a 0615 start. I made a lot of friends on that shift and look forward to making new ones when I start my 2nd shift in a few weeks. The temple will be closed next Wednesday for a national holiday and my surgery will be the following day. Hopefully I won't have to miss more than two weeks while recovering.

My pain continues, of course, but I managed 5 and a half hours of sleep last night which is an improvement. Today will be more rest and hopefully walking. The temperature hit 100 degrees yesterday so we went to University Place Mall and walked. This morning we hope to go up to Provo Canyon early and get a walk in. Cathy will serve in the Bishops Storehouse.

Come Follow Me

Alma 5: 45 And this is not all. Do ye not suppose that I know of these things myself? Behold, I testify unto you that I do know that these things whereof I have spoken are true. And how do ye suppose that I know of their surety?

46 Behold, I say unto you they are made known unto me by the Holy Spirit of God. Behold, I have fasted and prayed many days that I might know these things of myself. And now I do know of myself that they are true; for the Lord God hath made them manifest unto me by his Holy Spirit; and this is the spirit of revelation which is in me.

“If you want to know anything, you will have to do something.

Isn’t that true with anything we want to learn or know? ...[S]tart doing the gospel of Jesus Christ: praying, studying, serving others, and trusting in the Lord. Conversion won’t come while doing nothing. It comes through the power of the Holy Ghost as we intentionally make an effort to know by asking, seeking, and knocking. It comes by doing."

Rebecca L. Craven, Second Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency, April 2022

"One of the great truths of the Restoration is that the heavens are open—that we too can receive light and knowledge from on high. I testify that is true.

But we must be wary of a spiritual trap. Sometimes faithful Church members become discouraged and even drift away because they haven’t had overwhelming spiritual experiences—because they haven’t experienced their own pillar of light. President Spencer W. Kimball warned, “Always expecting the spectacular, many will miss entirely the constant flow of revealed communication.”

President Joseph F. Smith likewise recalled, “The Lord withheld marvels from me [when I was young], and showed me the truth, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little.”

That is the Lord’s typical pattern, brothers and sisters. Rather than sending us a pillar of light, the Lord sends us a ray of light, and then another, and another.

Those rays of light are continuously being poured down upon us.

That means, brothers and sisters, that in time and through “great diligence,” we too can have our own pillar of light—one ray at a time. And in the midst of that pillar, we too will find a loving Heavenly Father calling us by name, pointing us to our Savior, Jesus Christ, and inviting us to “Hear Him!”

Elder Alexander Dushku Of the Seventy, April 2024

Alma 5: 61 And now I, Alma, do command you in the language of him who hath commanded me, that ye observe to do the words which I have spoken unto you. 62 I speak by way of command unto you that belong to the church; and unto those who do not belong to the church I speak by way of invitation, saying: “Come and be baptized unto repentance, that ye also may be partakers of the fruit of the tree of life.”

We had a very nice visit with a mold abatement specialist who speculated that our mold issue was probably only in our drains. We made some effort to clean those drains and this morning I am not noticing any odor of mold. So I'm hoping that that's the long term solution -- keep the drains clean.

Today is the last day on the early shift as a temple ordinance worker. I don't have to be there until 0615.

Next week, for a reason unknown to me, or temple will be closed for one day. After that, assigned the 2nd shift on Wednesdays which means, I think, 1000 - 1400... Much better for a man of my age.

I'm still in constant pain and I'm looking forward to my surgery a week from tomorrow. I believe that will end this pain.

I'm so blessed to live in a day where modern medical science has developed to a point where these ailments can be healed.

Come Follow Me

Alma 5:26 And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?

27 Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble? That your garments have been cleansed and made white through the blood of Christ, who will come to redeem his people from their sins?

28 Behold, are ye stripped of pride? I say unto you, if ye are not ye are not prepared to meet God. Behold ye must prepare quickly; for the kingdom of heaven is soon at hand, and such an one hath not eternal life.

29 Behold, I say, is there one among you who is not stripped of envy? I say unto you that such an one is not prepared; and I would that he should prepare quickly, for the hour is close at hand, and he knoweth not when the time shall come; for such an one is not found guiltless.

"In the fifth chapter of Alma, an introspective question is posed: “Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble?” That question implies that humility is a mandatory requirement for us to be ready to return to the presence of God.

We all like to think we are sufficiently humble, but some experiences in life make us realize that the natural, prideful man or woman often is very much alive within us."

"Humility is a mandatory requirement for us to be ready to return to the presence of God."

Elder Joni L. Koch Of the Seventy, October  2023

"Some mistakenly receive the message that they are not worthy to participate fully in the gospel because they are not completely free of bad habits. God’s message is that worthiness is not flawlessness. Worthiness is being honest and trying. We must be honest with God, priesthood leaders, and others who love us, and we must strive to keep God’s commandments and never give up just because we slip up. Elder Bruce C. Hafen said that developing a Christlike character “requires patience and persistence more than it requires flawlessness.” The Lord has said the gifts of the Spirit are “given for the benefit of those who love me and keep all my commandments, and him that seeketh so to do.”

My meeting with Dr. Kimball resulted in my being scheduled for spinal surgery a week from this Thursday, June 20th. I am, based on my conversation with Dr. Kimball, confident that my on going pain issues will be over. Hooray!!! In conjunction with this surgery I have pretty much decided against continuing to play pickleball. I'll talk to Dr.Kimball about it but I'm pretty sure he'll agree. My exercise will then consist of walking, stair climbing and using my stretch cords for arm and shoulder exercise. I don't ever want to go through this pain again.

We also got for new tires for our Prius at Costco. I noticed immediately that the road noise was far less which was one of my goals. Now we will get our new shock absorbers on the rear this Friday and the car should be like new. I'm also hoping that our gas mileage will improve.

We have a strong odor of mold in our front bathroom and I can't figure out why. We have a technician coming over today and are hoping he can help us figure this out.

Come Follow Me

Alma 5:19 I say unto you, can ye look up to God at that day with a pure heart and clean hands? I say unto you, can you look up, having the image of God engraven upon your countenances?

3 Nephi 18:24 Therefore, hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do.

"Let me suggest that hands are made clean through the process of putting off the natural man and by overcoming sin and the evil influences in our lives through the Savior’s Atonement. Hearts are purified as we receive His strengthening power to do good and become better. All of our worthy desires and good works, as necessary as they are, can never produce clean hands and a pure heart. It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that provides both a cleansing and redeeming power that helps us to overcome sin and a sanctifying and strengthening power that helps us to become better than we ever could by relying only upon our own strength. The infinite Atonement is for both the sinner and for the saint in each of us."

I wonder if I should keep mentioning how much pain I'm in... I don't really feel comfortable sounding like I'm complaining. But yesterday I was hurting all day. I finally took probably too many pain pills last night so I could sleep a little. Went to bed early and got maybe five hours of sleep. I got up at about 0200 and slept off and on in my Lazy Boy recliner for a couple of hours.

I'm going this morning to see Dr. Jon Kimball, the surgeon who operated in my spine a couple of years ago. Hopefully he'll have some solution.

Right now, my left leg and hip are weak and it's difficult for me to move around much but I can if I push it. I have a temple shift Wednesday morning, day after tomorrow, then two weeks off before I go to the 2nd shift. I would like to serve at the Bishops Storehouse tomorrow if I can do so with Cathy's approval. She takes good care of me. We'll see.

I also have my first physical therapy session scheduled for this afternoon. This was done at Dr. Gordon's direction and we'll run it by Dr. Kimball and see what he has to say.

My unlearned opinion is that I have nerve damage in my lower spine that might be correctable with surgery. Stay tuned.

Come Follow Me

Alma 5: 14 And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?

"The purpose and purification, the happiness and joy, and the continuing conversion and protection that come from “yielding [our] hearts unto God” and “[receiving] his image in [our] countenances” cannot be obtained merely by performing and checking off all the spiritual things we are supposed to do. Rather, the power of the Savior’s gospel to transform and bless us flows from discerning and applying the interrelatedness of its doctrine, principles, and practices. Only as we gather together in one all things in Christ, with firm focus upon Him, can gospel truths synergistically enable us to become what God desires us to become and endure valiantly to the end.

The power of the Savior’s gospel to transform and bless us flows from discerning and applying the interrelatedness of its doctrine, principles, and practices."

We went to Costco in Orem and ordered four new tires for our Prius. We should be notified in a few days that these tires are available and we'll take the car in and get them installed. Then next Friday we'll get our new rear shock absorbers installed and the car should be in "like new" condition. So together we will have invested close to $2,000 but the car should last at least another 100,000 miles so money will spent.

We did a little more garden work... at least Cathy did.

We walked up in Provo Canyon and got my 7500 steps in. At first we drove to Vivian Park but there was no parking available. It was a beautiful day and lots of people were taking advantage of being up in the canyon. Then we drove back to Bridal Veil Falls and it, too, was jammed. So we decided to walk downstream instead and very few people were on that stretch. We'll try to do that again this morning.

Walking has gotten difficult for me. My left leg just feels weak and it seems to take more energy to walk. I'm finally going to see Dr. Kimball tomorrow morning and see if another spinal surgery might be helpful..

Come Follow Me

Alma stepped down from the judgment seat in order to bear “pure testimony” to the people.

Alma 4:19 And this he did that he himself might go forth among his people, or among the people of Nephi, that he might preach the word of God unto them, to stir them up in remembrance of their duty, and that he might pull down, by the word of God, all the pride and craftiness and all the contentions which were among his people, seeing no way that he might reclaim them save it were in bearing down in pure testimony against them.

"A testimony is what we know to be true in our minds and in our hearts by the witness of the Holy Ghost. As we profess truth rather than admonish, exhort, or simply share interesting experiences, we invite the Holy Ghost to confirm the verity of our words. The power of pure testimony does not come from sophisticated language or effective presentation; rather, it is the result of revelation conveyed by the third member of the Godhead, even the Holy Ghost."

I think we have found a good car repair place to behind using instead of the Toyota dealership. It's called "Honest - 1" which at first seems a little corny but actually is looking to be a correct name and a very good car repair location. It's run by a man named Bob Sylvester and I found after visiting with him for a short time that he sends very honest, knowledgeable and hard working. I also found that he is a returned missionary and active in the church. All good things. His place of business is clean and neat and everything I saw indicates a top notch car repair location. He did our 100,000 mile service on our Prius and pointed out that we need new rear shock absorbers and new tires. We scheduled the shock absorbers for next Friday with him and we're going to Costco today to see about new tires.

The Prius has been a great car and we believe it will, with this investment in repairs and tires, will last another 100,000 miles and more.

Our Elders Quorum lesson tomorrow will be based on a general conference address given this last April by Elder Gerrit W. Gong Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles where he points out that "In time and eternity, the purpose of Creation and the nature of God Himself are to bring all things together for our good."

I listened to it this morning again and found it to be very enlightening. It's the kind of talk that should be reviewed and considered repeatedly and I shall try to do that.

Alma 4: 10 And thus ended the eighth year of the reign of the judges; and the wickedness of the church was a great stumbling-block to those who did not belong to the church; and thus the church began to fail in its progress.

"Those who are compliant with the Lord’s plan of life…will endure. In significant ways their lives will manifest the fruits of the gospel and set them apart as a beacon to all who are seeking for light and truth.

When we fail to measure up to this trust, we betray the covenants we have made. Not only do we then fail to gain the full benefits of the gospel for ourselves, but we become a stumbling block for others."

I'm not sure why but some of my blog entries are not being saved. I believe I created one for yesterday and it's gone. If I think of or remember anything I'll try to get it in today or later.

I've not been feeling well for the past few weeks due to, I think, a pinched nerve or nerves in my lower spine. I'm either in pain or just feel weakness in my left lower back or hip or thigh or knee or any combination thereof. Because of that, I did not serve in the Bishops Storehouse again yesterday.

This is going to be a somewhat disjointed Entry. I'll write whatever comes into my elderly brain in whatever order I think of it.

Yesterday, my nephew, Craig, and I gave a blessing to Beth. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is scheduled for a "lumpectomy" this morning. It is believed that her condition was discovered early and that this morning's procedure will take care of her situation but with cancer you never know. Our brother, Bob, who is ten years younger than I died of cancer not too long ago so we are concerned.

This morning I'm taking our Prius in for its 100,000 mile service. It's been a great car and we hope to keep it that way.

Alma 1: 30 And thus, in their prosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were naked, or that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, or that had not been nourished; and they did not set their hearts upon riches; therefore they were liberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church, having no respect to persons as to those who stood in need.

"The Church of Jesus Christ is under divine mandate to care for the poor. It is one of the pillars of the work of salvation and exaltation...

The Church responds to this charge in a wide variety of ways, including:

the ministering we do through Relief Society, priesthood quorums, and classes; fasting and the use of fast offerings; welfare farms and canneries; welcome centers for immigrants; outreach for those in prison; Church humanitarian efforts; and the JustServe app, where it’s available, that matches volunteers with service opportunities."

Sharon Eubank, First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency, October 2021

Alma 4: 8 For they saw and beheld with great sorrow that the people of the church began to be lifted up in the pride of their eyes, and to set their hearts upon riches and upon the vain things of the world, that they began to be scornful, one towards another, and they began to persecute those that did not believe according to their own will and pleasure.

"We are often unaware of the distractions which push us in a material direction and keep us from a Christ-centered focus. In essence we let celestial goals get sidetracked by telestial distractions."

Alma 1: 26 And when the priests left their labor to impart the word of God unto the people, the people also left their labors to hear the word of God. And when the priest had imparted unto them the word of God they all returned again diligently unto their labors; and the priest, not esteeming himself above his hearers, for the preacher was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than the learner; and thus they were all equal, and they did all labor, every man according to his strength.

"Focusing on the needs of the students, a gospel teacher will never obscure their view of the Master by standing in the way or by shadowing the lesson with self-promotion or self-interest. This means that a gospel teacher must never indulge in priestcrafts, which are “that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world.” A gospel teacher does not preach “to become popular” or “for the sake of riches and honor”. He or she follows the marvelous Book of Mormon example in which “the preacher was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than the learner.” Both will always look to the Master."

I feel pretty good today so far (it's early) so I'm thinking I'll probably go ahead and serve in the Bishops Storehouse with Cathy this afternoon. I still feel that I'm going to undergo an additional spinal surgery but that will depend on my meeting with Dr. Kimball next Monday morning. Then tomorrow I'm back to serving in the temple as an Ordinance Worker. None of these things are physically too demanding so I'm hoping to not suffer adverse effects. We'll see.

Come Follow Me

In Alma's day many people left the church and were actively attacking those who didn't. This is also happening in very sinister ways today.

Alma 1:25 Now this was a great trial to those that did stand fast in the faith; nevertheless, they were steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of God, and they bore with patience the persecution which was heaped upon them.

"How do you remain “steadfast and immovable” during a trial of faith? You immerse yourself in the very things that helped build your core of faith: you exercise faith in Christ, you pray, you ponder the scriptures, you repent, you keep the commandments, and you serve others.

When faced with a trial of faith—whatever you do, you don’t step away from the Church! Distancing yourself from the kingdom of God during a trial of faith is like leaving the safety of a secure storm cellar just as the tornado comes into view."

I'm still in pain when I try to sleep at night. After about five and a half to six hours of sleep the pain is too severe to sleep any longer. Hoping that when I finally get to see Dr. Kimball that we can begin to fiber a cure.

We are planning to go for a walk in Provo Canyon this morning.

I'm hoping to be able to work in the Bishops Storehouse tomorrow. We'll see.

Alma 1: 20 Yea, they did persecute them, and afflict them with all manner of words, and this because of their humility; because they were not proud in their own eyes, and because they did impart the word of God, one with another, without money and without price.

"Civility and decency seem to have disappeared during this era of polarization and passionate disagreements.

Vulgarity, faultfinding, and evil speaking of others are all too common. Too many pundits, politicians, entertainers, and other influencers throw insults constantly. I am greatly concerned that so many people seem to believe that it is completely acceptable to condemn, malign, and vilify anyone who does not agree with them. Many seem eager to damage another’s reputation with pathetic and pithy barbs!

Anger never persuades. Hostility builds no one. Contention never leads to inspired solutions."

"Peacemakers Needed" By President Russell M. Nelson, April 2023

"Many of us live or work in an environment where humility is often misunderstood and considered a weakness. Not many corporations or institutions include humility as a value statement or a desired characteristic of their management. Yet as we learn about the workings of God, the power of a humble and submissive spirit becomes apparent. In the kingdom of God, greatness begins with humility and submissiveness. These companion virtues are the first critical steps to opening the doors to the blessings of God and the power of the priesthood. It matters not who we are or how lofty our credentials appear. Humility and submissiveness to the Lord, coupled with a grateful heart, are our strength and our hope."

The Provo Farmers Market opened yesterday for the first time this season and Cathy suggested we take a look. I have to say that it's still, as it has been in the past, mostly a collection of individually booths with people trying to sell things they've created or obtained some other way. Not much in the way of fresh farm food. The farmers markets are enjoyed in Kentucky kind of spoiled us because they were mostly marketing fresh food that we enjoyed.

Yesterday, we purchased some bricks for $.68 each to line our front garden. Before we went to the farmers market I placed some of the bricks along the front edge of our front yard garden. Until now, the border of the garden was not too well defined and these bricks seem to help with that.

Later, the weather got too hot to go for a walk outside so I did my indoor exercises. This consists of five times up and down the stairs, an array of stretch band exercises and a short walk around the basement repeated three times. When I was done, my total steps for the day was about 8,000 which is pretty good.

I'm still in pain, though, and the pain causes me to be somewhat weaker but I believe the exercises helped.

Mosiah 28:3 Now they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to quake and tremble.

4 And thus did the Spirit of the Lord work upon them, for they were the very vilest of sinners. And the Lord saw fit in his infinite mercy to spare them; nevertheless they suffered much anguish of soul because of their iniquities, suffering much and fearing that they should be cast off forever.

"Our own conversion must come first. The most important conversion for any of us is our own. If we are to bring the light of the gospel into others’ lives, it must shine brightly in our own. Once converted, the sons of Mosiah labored without ceasing to share the gospel with others, “for they could not bear that any human soul should perish.” Only when we are converted to the Lord Jesus Christ are we in a position to strengthen others. And only then do we begin to understand that our lives truly do have meaning, purpose, and direction…"

We found what I hope will be a good car repair place tp get our Prius it's 100,000 mile service. It's very close to our Provo doctors offices and it's called Honest One. They were recommended by a guy I trust. We made an appointment for next Friday. The Prius is the best car I've ever owned. As a hybrid, it gets over 50 mpg, it's comfortable for a big guy like me to drive and had never given us any problems. Hopefully we can get another 100,000 miles or more out of it.

We then drove the Alpine Loop from Provo Canyon to American Fork Canyon. Very pretty drive.

Earlier we got my spine xrays completed in preparation for my visit with Dr. Jon Kimball, my spine surgeon. I'm fearful that I might need additional spinal surgery but we'll see. I'm in constant pain depending on pain medication and my left leg seems noticeably weak. We have a recent MRI and now xrays so hopefully he'll be able to come up with a good suggestion. I'm 77 years old but in pretty good shape for an old guy (except my current spine problem).

Stay tuned.

Come Follow Me

Mosiah 27: 35 And they traveled throughout all the land of Zarahemla, and among all the people who were under the reign of king Mosiah, zealously striving to repair all the injuries which they had done to the church, confessing all their sins, and publishing all the things which they had seen, and explaining the prophecies and the scriptures to all who desired to hear them.

36 And thus they were instruments in the hands of God in bringing many to the knowledge of the truth, yea, to the knowledge of their Redeemer.

"In the Book of Mormon we learn that from the moment Alma the Younger was delivered from suffering the consequences of his own rebelliousness, he was never the same…His constant worship of the Almighty God took the form of energetic discipleship.

True worship transforms us into sincere and earnest disciples of our beloved Master and Savior, Jesus Christ. We change and become more like Him.

We become more understanding and caring. More forgiving. More loving…

True worship leads to an unwavering determination to walk the path of discipleship. And that leads inevitably to charity."
