Today's Journal Entry

Beth and Karen came over last night and brought tacos and we had a nice visit. They were going to come tonight but as of 7 p.m. Last night I'm on a clear liquid diet in preparation for tomorrow's surgery. Speaking of that, I might not be able to write in this journal for the next day or two of I'm hospitalized, but we'll see.

Today we have no plans so maybe a drive and walk but no meals for me. I have Popsicles and juice. Oh boy!

Come Follow Me

"Whenever I hear anyone, including myself, say, “I know the Book of Mormon is true,” I want to exclaim, “That’s nice, but it is not enough!” We need to feel, deep in “the inmost part” of our hearts, that the Book of Mormon is unequivocally the word of God. We must feel it so deeply that we would never want to live even one day without it. I might paraphrase President Brigham Young in saying, “I wish I had the voice of seven thunders to wake up the people” to the truth and power of the Book of Mormon."

President Russell M. Nelson, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2017

Alma 37: 8 And now, it has hitherto been wisdom in God that these things should be preserved; for behold, they have enlarged the memory of this people, yea, and convinced many of the error of their ways, and brought them to the knowledge of their God unto the salvation of their souls.

9 Yea, I say unto you, were it not for these things that these records do contain, which are on these plates, Ammon and his brethren could not have convinced so many thousands of the Lamanites of the incorrect tradition of their fathers; yea, these records and their words brought them unto repentance; that is, they brought them to the knowledge of the Lord their God, and to rejoice in Jesus Christ their Redeemer.

"The scriptures enlarge our memory by helping us always to remember the Lord and our relationship to Him and the Father…

The scriptures also enlarge our memory by helping us not forget what we and earlier generations have learned…

God uses scripture to unmask erroneous thinking, false traditions, and sin with its devastating effects…

In the end, the central purpose of all scripture is to fill our souls with faith in God the Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ..."

Today's Journal Entry

Cathy and Karen and I went up to Provo Canyon to walk again and as we got up to the Upper Falls Picnic area we saw a car that seemed at first to be parked strangely. But it turns out the driver of the car had somehow driven up on the upper falls bridge over the Provo River and when driving off of the bridge had inadvertently tried to drive down this incline as seen in the photo and fit hung up on a large rock.

It was completely incomprehensible how they could have gotten into this situation but obviously they had. It was an older couple about our age and they were from Missouri. The wife was obviously embarrassed and the husband had apparently been driving. He claimed that his map program had directed him onto the bridge. That was so absurd that I just stopped pursuing any questions about how they got there. He was obviously embarrassed and we just helped them get a tow truck to come and rescue them. Interesting.

I had forms to sign and lab work to get done in preparation for my upcoming surgery. I believe that's all done now. Today is Tuesday and surgery will be first thing Thursday morning. I'm not sure whether I will have to be in the hospital overnight but Cathy is pretty sure I will and she's usually right about stiff like that. Last time I was in for two nights. I'm also on a "clear liquid" diet starting at 7 p.m. tonight so I'm going to be hungry.

I've been thinking about this whole process. I have the strong feeling that Dr Kimball is very qualified and competent. I think he feels a little badly that this follow up Surgery is needed and I have the unmistakable feeling that he is going to be especially attentive and that he will do everything he can to get this fixed properly. I feel good about this whole process and believe I will be better off when this is all done. In the meantime I'm going to have to go through the recovery and healing process one more time but when this is over, I truly believe I will be in good shape.

Alma 37: 6 Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.

7 And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.

"Those “seemingly insignificant” private decisions include how we use our time, what we view on television and the internet, what we read, the art and music with which we surround ourselves at work and at home, what we seek for entertainment, and how we apply our commitment to be honest and truthful. Another seemingly small and simple thing is being civil and cheerful in our personal interactions.

None of these desirable small and simple things will lift us to great things unless they are practiced consistently and continuously."

Today's Journal Entry

Cathy has arranged to have Karen join us for a walk up the canyon this morning. The plan is we will pick up Karen at 0730 but we shall see.

Other than that, I'm hoping to hear from Dr Kimball as to what he has in mind for repairing my spine. The preliminary thinking was that he would do whatever surgery needs doing this coming Thursday. Obviously I'm anxious to hear. Yesterday At Sandgren and Bill Steven's came over after church and gave me a blessing. Then we all have Cathy a blessing for her osteoporosis coming solutions.

Later in my Come Follow Me reading I noticed the following in Alma's advice to his son, Helaman, and it really touched me. So I included it here:

Alma 36: 3 And now, O my son Helaman, behold, thou art in thy youth, and therefore, I beseech of thee that thou wilt hear my words and learn of me; for I do know that whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day.

I believe it and it gives me great hope.

As I reflect on this situation, I am reminded how many times in the past that I actually had the thought that things are going awfully well with me and wondering when "the other shoe would drop" so to speak. Nearly six weeks ago I underwent my most recent spine surgery because of increasing numbness and pain in my left hip, thigh and knee. The recovery has been long and painful and I have to admit that when I saw Dr Kimball last Friday I was wondering about the success of the surgery. It turns out That he too was wondering. He ordered a CT Scan that I underwent that same day and it revealed that there were problems with some of the hardware he had installed during my surgical procedure. He reviewed the results and called me that night. We came to the conclusion that Follow up Surgery was indicated and that we would probably do it this coming Thursday. Anyway, to cut to the end, I'm thinking the other shoe may have dropped.

I can't begin to tell you how difficult it has been to not be able to do much for the last five plus weeks and now to not be able to do much in the foreseeable future. That's why Alma's advice to Helaman struck home with me this morning. I know that at some point my life will be better again.

Come Follow Me

Alma 36:17 And it came to pass that as I was thus racked with torment, while I was harrowed up by the memory of my many sins, behold, I remembered also to have heard my father prophesy unto the people concerning the coming of one Jesus Christ, a Son of God, to atone for the sins of the world.

18 Now, as my mind caught hold upon this thought, I cried within my heart: O Jesus, thou Son of God, have mercy on me, who am in the gall of bitterness, and am encircled about by the everlasting chains of death.

19 And now, behold, when I thought this, I could remember my pains no more; yea, I was harrowed up by the memory of my sins no more.

20 And oh, what joy, and what marvelous light I did behold; yea, my soul was filled with joy as exceeding as was my pain!

21 Yea, I say unto you, my son, that there could be nothing so exquisite and so bitter as were my pains. Yea, and again I say unto you, my son, that on the other hand, there can be nothing so exquisite and sweet as was my joy.

"In Alma’s case, it was his mind that reached out and secured this powerful truth of Jesus Christ’s atoning sacrifice. Acting in faith on that truth, and by the power and grace of God, he was rescued from despair and filled with hope.

While our experiences may not be as dramatic as Alma’s, they are nonetheless as eternally significant. Our minds have also “caught hold upon this thought” of Jesus Christ and His merciful sacrifice, and our souls have felt the light and joy that follow."

Journal Entry

It's Sunday and I'm still trying to get well. I've found that the discomfort in my right calf muscle is probably related to my spinal surgery. The latest CT Scan revealed that one of the screws in my spine has shifted and is in a position to cause more harm obvious my right calf. Dr Kimball will have more info about that tomorrow morning and there is a plan to surgically correct the situation probably this coming Thursday. In the mean time I have to be very careful to not do anything to aggravate the situation. So life is difficult. It's hard to get through each day knowing I have to be constantly careful more than usual. Walking is difficult but useful so I try to do that as much as possible. The 90 degree plus days make that a little difficult. I think I will be able to go to church today and if like to stay for the whole block... Sacrament and Priesthood meetings. I think I need to just suck it up and get through it. Hopefully I'll know more after I talk to Dr Kimball tomorrow morning. In the meantime we need to be careful with Cathy and her osteoporosis.

So life's a little stressful right now but I have my strong testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and their love for me. I take great comfort in knowing that life is eternal and at some point it will again become wonderful.

Come Follow Me

Alma 34: 32 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.

33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

34 Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.

"Repentance begins with our Savior, and it is a joy, not a burden. In last December’s Christmas devotional, President Nelson taught: “True repentance is not an event. It is a never-ending privilege. It is fundamental to progression and having peace of mind, comfort, and joy.”

President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency

"Procrastination may seem the easy way, as it momentarily removes the effort required to accomplish something of value. Ironically, in time, procrastination produces a heavy burden laced with guilt and a hollow lack of satisfaction. Temporal and, even more importantly, spiritual goals will not be achieved by procrastination.

Now is the time to exercise our faith. Now is the time to commit to righteousness. Now is the time to do whatever is required to resolve our undesired circumstances. Now is the time to reconcile with God through the merciful process of change afforded us by the Redeemer of mankind."

My meeting with Dr. Kimball was somewhat disturbing in that the MRI and other testing indicated there were problems with my spinal surgery. He ordered a CT scan for later yesterday and it revealed that additional surgery is probably warranted. He called me yesterday evening and we agreed that I would submit to additional surgery this coming Thursday. We are not sure exactly what will be done but Dr. Kimball will review the CT Scan and  MRI more closely and we'll talk again on Monday.

Also, Cathy received word that she now has full-blown Osteoporosis which is a very serious situation. So we have that to deal with as well.

So I'm back on medical leave from the temple for now and probably will be limited in my Bishops Storehouse cities as well. We'll just have to see.

This morning we walked up at Bridal Veil Falls and discovered that walking on the car path on the north side of the river is much less crowded and the roadway surface is of higher quality and walking there was just much more enjoyable. Most people and bikes travel on the south side bike/pedestrian path. The surface is terrible and it's really crowded and dangerous. Plus, as you can see from the included photo, the view of the falls is very good from the north side.

Alma 34:28 And now behold, my beloved brethren, I say unto you, do not suppose that this is all; for after ye have done all these things, if ye turn away the needy, and the naked, and visit not the sick and afflicted, and impart of your substance, if ye have, to those who stand in need—I say unto you, if ye do not any of these things, behold, your prayer is vain, and availeth you nothing, and ye are as hypocrites who do deny the faith.

"In other words, to be converted, you must not only open your heart to a knowledge of the gospel and the love of God, you must practice the gospel law. You cannot fully understand or appreciate it unless you personally apply it in your life. Jesus said that He came to serve, not to be served. So it must be with you. You must look outward and care about others. You can be compassionate; you can be friendly; you can share; you can help others in a hundred small ways. As you do, the gospel of Jesus Christ will become a part of you."

I served my entire shift at the Bishops Storehouse yesterday and enjoyed it a lot. Cathy was there too, of course and we were fairly busy.

I have scheduled An endowment session for us tomorrow afternoon. I'm going to serve my new shift at the temple this Wednesday. Slowly getting back to normal.

I see Dr. Kimball this morning for a follow up to my surgery.

Alma 34: 10 For it is expedient that there should be a great and last sacrifice; yea, not a sacrifice of man, neither of beast, neither of any manner of fowl; for it shall not be a human sacrifice; but it must be an infinite and eternal sacrifice.

"The atoning sacrifice had to be carried out by the sinless Son of God, for fallen man could not atone for his own sins. The Atonement had to be infinite and eternal—to cover all men [and women] throughout all eternity.
Through His suffering and death, the Savior atoned for the sins of all [mankind]."

My efforts to control my glucose levels are paying off. I was pleasantly surprised to find my glucose management indicator (GMI) level down to 6.9.

I'd say that I'm learning how to eat better and my glucose monitor is helping. I'm truly blessed to live in a time where these medical innovations are available.

I'm planning on working at the Bishops Storehouse today and continue to work each Tuesday and Thursday for the foreseeable future. Next Wednesday I'm back to being an Ordinance Worker at the temple. So life is returning to normal. I still have to concentrate on controlled and limited bending, lifting and twisting but I think I will be able to get used to that.

Book of Mormon review (review of earlier Come Follow Me assignments): Alma 15

Come Follow Me

Alma 33:21 O my brethren, if ye could be healed by merely casting about your eyes that ye might be healed, would ye not behold quickly, or would ye rather harden your hearts in unbelief, and be slothful, that ye would not cast about your eyes, that ye might perish? 22 If so, wo shall come upon you; but if not so, then cast about your eyes and begin to believe in the Son of God, that he will come to redeem his people, and that he shall suffer and die to atone for their sins; and that he shall rise again from the dead, which shall bring to pass the resurrection, that all men shall stand before him, to be judged at the last and judgment day, according to their works.

I included this scripture because in today's world, like in the days of Alma, their seem to be many who are caught up in so called progressive, or "woke" policies. They refuse to consider logical and what I believe to be true explanations and descriptions of what's going on in our world in our day.

Alma 33: 22 If so, wo shall come upon you; but if not so, then cast about your eyes and begin to believe in the Son of God, that he will come to redeem his people, and that he shall suffer and die to atone for their sins; and that he shall rise again from the dead, which shall bring to pass the resurrection, that all men shall stand before him, to be judged at the last and judgment day, according to their works.
23 And now, my brethren, I desire that ye shall plant this word in your hearts, and as it beginneth to swell even so nourish it by your faith. And behold, it will become a tree, springing up in you unto everlasting life. And then may God grant unto you that your burdens may be light, through the joy of his Son. And even all this can ye do if ye will. Amen.

"In [Alma’s] instruction, he compared the word to a seed that must be planted and nourished, and he described “the word” as the life, mission, and atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ…
The seed we should strive to plant in our hearts is the word—even the life, mission, and doctrine of Jesus Christ. And as the word is nourished by faith, it can become a tree springing up in us unto everlasting life.
…[I]s the Word in us? Are the truths of the Savior’s gospel written in the fleshy tables of our hearts? Are we coming unto and gradually becoming more like Him? Is the tree of Christ growing in us? Are we striving to become “new [creatures]” in Him?"

My glucose management index (GMI) is down to 7.0 which might mean that I won't have to go on insulin. Dr. Welch was concerned, as was I, when it went up to 7.3 and felt that insulin injections were in order. We agreed to try to bring the GMI down this week and maybe avoid going to insulin. Seems to be working.

Book of Mormon review (review of earlier Come Follow Me assignments): Alma 14

It's very interesting to read in the Book of Mormon about how a growing segment of the people decided to not obey the established laws of their communities but rebelled and persecuted those who continued to live according to the law and behave appropriately and compare that to what's going on in America today. There is a large and growing segment of our population who are being lied to by our elected leaders and who nevertheless support them no matter what. The U.S. Constitution is under severe attack and our federal government is threatened.

So far, we are not being threatened by physical harm or persecution but that might not be far off. The parallels to the Book of Mormon experiences are stunning.

Alma 32: 27 But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

"Study the scriptures about faith. Alma 32:27 is a great place to begin learning the process of increasing your faith…Are you willing to try Alma’s experiment to increase your faith? Can you exercise even a particle of faith? Do you have a desire to believe?"

"Nearly 40 years ago as I contemplated the challenge of a mission, I felt very inadequate and unprepared. I remember praying, “Heavenly Father, how can I serve a mission when I know so little?” I believed in the Church, but I felt my spiritual knowledge was very limited. As I prayed, the feeling came: “You don’t know everything, but you know enough!” That reassurance gave me the courage to take the next step into the mission field. Faith is not only a feeling; it's a decision"

I think I'm basically recovered from surgery to the extent that I have nearly no pain but it's still a chore to walk long distances. It seems like I used to walk 7500 steps or more every day. Currently it seems like more of a chore to do that. Plus I can't climb stairs as easily as I used to. I think all of this is just a matter of conditioning and seems to improve daily. I'm blessed that Cathy really urges me to get out and walk and I need to just do it.

I'm going to try to put in a full shift at the Bishops Storehouse this afternoon and get a good walk in this morning.

We went to the Springville farmers market yesterday evening and quite enjoyed it. One of the booths was selling beautiful peaches so we bought some for us then went back and bought some for Beth and Karen and dropped them off to them on the way home.

Alma 32: 21 And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.

"Just believing, just having a “molecule” of faith—simply hoping for things which are not yet seen in our lives, but which are nevertheless truly there to be bestowed—that simple step, when focused on the Lord Jesus Christ, has ever been and always will be the first principle of His eternal gospel, the first step out of despair.

My desire today is for all of us—not just those who are “poor in spirit” but all of us—to have more straightforward personal experience with the Savior’s example. Sometimes we seek heaven too obliquely, focusing on programs or history or the experience of others. Those are important but not as important as personal experience, true discipleship, and the strength that comes from experiencing firsthand the majesty of His touch."

My glucose readings are pretty consistent but higher than they have been. I'm trying to eat well and feel that I am but my glucose levels were around 150 all day yesterday. Before my surgery I was usually in the 135-140 range. I may have to go on insulin if the levels stay high. Right now I'm at 139 so maybe there is hope. I'm 78 years old and am advised that all sorts of heart and kidney issues will start manifesting if my glucose levels are too high. I'd like to make it to 90, or another 11-12 years or more if possible. I've been relying on medication and good luck for too long now... sneaking in the occasional cookie, etc. I'm going to stop that.

Anybody reading this should try to avoid becoming diabetic. I've lived with it for decades now and it may yet be the factor that seals my fate. It's no big deal until it's too late. I've lost weight and that has helped but I've reached a point where extra care is needed. I'm pretty active and otherwise healthy for my age but now I'm going to have to be even more careful with how and what I eat.

I wish there was a cure for diabetes but for now, once you get it you've got it for life.

Alma 32: 15 Yea, he that truly humbleth himself, and repenteth of his sins, and endureth to the end, the same shall be blessed—yea, much more blessed than they who are compelled to be humble because of their exceeding poverty.

"God will have a humble people. Either we can choose to be humble or we can be compelled to be humble…
Let us choose to be humble.
We can choose to humble ourselves by conquering enmity toward our brothers and sisters, esteeming them as ourselves, and lifting them as high or higher than we are…by receiving counsel and chastisement…by forgiving those who have offended us…by rendering selfless service…by going on missions and preaching the word that can humble others…by getting to the temple more frequently…by confessing and forsaking our sins and being born of God…by loving God, submitting our will to His, and putting Him first in our lives."

We walked up in Provo Canyon yesterday and for the day I got in over 9000 steps... by far the most daily steps since my surgery.

My GMI is now down to 7.1 and my glucose readings seemed lower for the last two days. Dr. Welch communicated with me that he thought I needed to be on daily insulin injections but maybe my new readings are indicating that might not be needed. We'll see where we are on Monday and go from there. I'm OK with the insulin injections if needed but, of course, I think I'd rather not if possible.

When we got home, I noticed a fly in our kitchen area and we normally don't have flies. A year or so ago, Jake bought me a salt gun which is an air gun designed to shoot salt at flies. I've used it maybe twice before and it's very effective and sort of fun. I mean if your going to use a fly swatter, why not have some fun and shoot the flies with a salt gun. It's actually less messy too. The flies are disabled if not dead and you just scoop them up with a napkin or tissue. So I used the salt gun and now I'm 3 for 3 on neutralizing flies.

Alma 31: 31 O Lord, my heart is exceedingly sorrowful; wilt thou comfort my soul in Christ. O Lord, wilt thou grant unto me that I may have strength, that I may suffer with patience these afflictions which shall come upon me, because of the iniquity of this people.

"Much of our suffering is not necessarily our fault...Opposition is part of Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness. We all encounter enough to bring us to an awareness of our Father’s love and of our need for the Savior’s help.

The Savior is not a silent observer. He Himself knows personally and infinitely the pain we face…Sometimes in the depth of pain, we are tempted to ask, “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?” I testify the answer is yes, there is a physician. The Atonement of Jesus Christ covers all these conditions and purposes of mortality."

Do not let unfairness harden you or corrode your faith in God. Instead, ask God for help. Increase your appreciation for and reliance on the Savior. And also they are cast into prison, and delivered by the miraculous power of God which was in them, according to the record of Alma. Comprising chapters 9 through 14.

Come Follow Me

Alma 31: 5 And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them—therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God.

"The word of God is the doctrine taught by Jesus Christ and by His prophets. Alma knew that words of doctrine had great power. They can open the minds of people to see spiritual things not visible to the natural eye. And they can open the heart to feelings of the love of God and a love for truth…Truth can prepare its own way. Simply hearing the words of doctrine can plant the seed of faith in the heart. And even a tiny seed of faith in Jesus Christ invites the Spirit."

Cathy's TeleHealth visit with Dr. Kimball yesterday got changed to a personal appointment this morning because he was so behind in his schedule. So we are first today at 0745 and should be able to see him without problem.

I'm going to get my stake temple recommend interview this evening so I'll be ready to go when I resume my duties on 7/31.

Book of Mormon review (review of earlier Come Follow Me assignments): Alma 8

Come Follow Me

Alma 30:46 And now it came to pass that Alma said unto him: Behold, I am grieved because of the hardness of your heart, yea, that ye will still resist the spirit of the truth, that thy soul may be destroyed.

"Each of us needs to nourish our seeds of faith so that they continue to take root…Yet at the same time, the ground seems to be hardening, and many are less receptive to things of the Spirit. The miracles of modern technology have brought efficiency into our lives in ways not dreamed of a generation ago, yet with this new technology has come a deluge of new challenges to our morals and our values. Some tend to rely more on technology than on theology…

We also need to prepare our own seedbed of faith. To do this we need to plow the soil through daily humble prayer, asking for strength and forgiveness… There is no better place for the spiritual seeds of our faith to be nurtured than within the hallowed sanctuaries of our temples and in our homes."

I went to get my hair cut yesterday morning and as soon as I was finished, Dr. Welch phoned to say I could come in right then and he would see me. He set up a blood test for me this morning. I had contacted his office because my blood glucose levels had become higher lately. I might have to go on insulin depending on the results of this blood test but my GMI WENT down a point this morning from 7.3 to 7.2.

Then I had a visit from a nice sales staff guy showing a bone healing simulator that Dr.Kimball wants me to use until further notice for two hours a day. It's supposed to help heal my spinal fusion and so I'm happy to do it. In fact I already used it this morning.

This is my fourth week missing my assignment in the temple as an Ordinance Worker. I think I'm well enough to go back next week but I think I'll make it two weeks. I am due to be seen by Dr. Kimball a week from this Friday and I want his advice first. I truly miss my service in the temple but all things considered, two weeks from today makes sense.

Book of Mormon review (review of earlier Come Follow Me assignments): Alma 6 and 7

Come Follow Me

Alma 30:44 But Alma said unto him: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.

"As we allow Him to direct us in all things, we receive testimony that “all things denote there is a God,” because where we look for Him we will find Him—each and every day."

Vitals: Weight 217.8, GMI 7.3, Pain 2

Journal Entry: Cathy has been having back problems now and we have set up a "TeleHealth" appointment for her with Dr. Kimball's office tomorrow morning. I can foresee a need for me to hurry and get healthy so I can start taking care of her if needed. We both hope that won't happen but we are truly blessed to have each other and other friends that might be needed.

I got approved to drive again since I'm no longer taking Tramadol and haven't been for nearly a week.

Cathy knows she needs to drive sometimes and may need to again so she still will drive but I can take a big share of the driving when and if needed. She is getting better and better and that's a good thing.

My weight is down to 217.8 this morning. Cathy is a little concerned about that but I checked a general weight chart that shows 6'7" men should ideally and generally weigh between about 198 an 242 so I'm right smack in the middle of that and feel good about my weight. I truly don't want to lose any more weight because my clothes won't fit me at all. The problem there is my blood glucose level is higher and my glucose management index (GMI) reading is at 7.3. I had it down to 6.5 less than two weeks ago so eating more, even healthy eating, seems to be adversely affecting my blood glucose level. I've been in touch with my personal care (and Diabetes) doctor, Dr. Welch 's office about that and they think it might be the large amounts of Tylenol I've been taking for my pain management. But further study is indicated.

Book of Mormon review (review of earlier Come Follow Me assignments): Alma 6

Alma 30:34 And now, if we do not receive anything for our labors in the church, what doth it profit us to labor in the church save it were to declare the truth, that we may have rejoicings in the joy of our brethren?

"[T]o serve in this Church is to stand in the river of God’s love for His children. This Church is a work party of people with picks and shovels trying to help clear the channel for the river of God’s love to reach His children at the end of the row…May we seek His loving face and then be vessels of His mercy to His children."

Journal Entry: We went to Sacrament meeting yesterday but it was difficult sitting for the entire time frame. Nevertheless I think we can do it in the future. Today should be less hot outside but if we're going to walk outdoors we'll have to do it early. I think we are going to try to schedule some temple ordinances for this week.

Cathy has ongoing back pain that has become more severe lately. I'm hoping we can get her an appointment with Dr. Kimball soon.

There's not much to Journal about since my surgery.

Come Follow Me

Book of Mormon review (review of earlier Come Follow Me assignments): Alma 5

Alma 30:22 And it came to pass that the high priest said unto him: Why do ye go about perverting the ways of the Lord? Why do ye teach this people that there shall be no Christ, to interrupt their rejoicings? Why do ye speak against all the prophecies of the holy prophets?

"As we diligently focus on the Savior and then follow His pattern of focusing on joy, we need to avoid those things that can interrupt our joy. Remember Korihor, the anti-Christ? Spewing falsehoods about the Savior, Korihor went from place to place until he was brought before a high priest who asked him: “Why do ye go about perverting the ways of the Lord? Why do ye teach this people that there shall be no Christ, to interrupt their rejoicings?” Anything that opposes Christ or His doctrine will interrupt our joy. That includes the philosophies of men, so abundant online and in the blogosphere, which do exactly what Korihor did. If we look to the world and follow its formulas for happiness, we will never know joy."

We went out for what I call a "progressive" breakfast in that I got my breakfast burrito from Del Taco and Cathy got her egg white bites at Starbucks then we went to Chick Fil -A for our yogurt parfaits.

Then we wanted to go to Sun River Gardens to get some hydrangea food but they didn't open until 0900 so we drove up to Grove Canyon in Pleasant Grove to get a close look at their huge American flag. So we got the stuff from Sun River then Cathy drove us up to a restaurant near Kamas called Woodland Biscuit Company. It was a cute place but only open on Saturdays and Sundays. Since yesterday was Saturday we thought we were in good shape but they politely told us that without a reservation they couldn't help us. So live and learn. There is another place up there in Oakley that was open and happy to seat us.

Former president Donald Trump was injured in an obvious assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last evening. Sad. He will be fine but one bystander was murdered and at least two others seriously injured in the incident.

Come Follow Me

Book of Mormon Review Reading: Alma 4

Alma 27:28 And they did look upon shedding the blood of their brethren with the greatest abhorrence; and they never could be prevailed upon to take up arms against their brethren; and they never did look upon death with any degree of terror, for their hope and views of Christ and the resurrection; therefore, death was swallowed up to them by the victory of Christ over it.

"Hope is one leg of a three-legged stool, together with faith and charity. These three stabilize our lives regardless of the rough or uneven surfaces we might encounter at the time. The scriptures are clear and certain about the importance of hope. The Apostle Paul taught that the scriptures were written to the end that we “might have hope.”

Hope is a gift of the Spirit. It is a hope that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the power of His Resurrection, we shall be raised unto life eternal and this because of our faith in the Savior. This kind of hope is both a principle of promise as well as a commandment, and, as with all commandments, we have the responsibility to make it an active part of our lives and overcome the temptation to lose hope. Hope in our Heavenly Father’s merciful plan of happiness leads to peace, mercy, rejoicing, and gladness. The hope of salvation is like a protective helmet; it is the foundation of our faith and an anchor to our souls."

Vitals: weight 220.2; GMI 7.0%; Pain level 2

Journal Entry: It's now Saturday morning. I made an entry yesterday morning but somehow it got deleted. The weather has been very hot lately and I have been mostly confined indoors where our air conditioning has kept me very comfortable.

One of the innumerable things I love about Cathy is her love of gardens. As you can see from this photo her hard work has paid off with a lovely front garden at our home. The dirt stretch in front of the garden is as a result of hers and Kevin's efforts to eliminate a slightly low area that was causing drainage issues.

Anyway, my pain level has sort of morphed into discomfort rather than pain but it's still distracting. My legs got quite weak during the three weeks after surgery where I just could not move much. Getting up to go from room to room for whatever reason was so painful that I limited that kind of movement as much as possible. I'm no longer taking Tramadol which is an opioid pain relief medicine.

Instead I'm relying on an occasional Tylenol tablet.

My weight had been going down and it's now holding at about 220, which is good. But my glucose levels are way up resulting in an A1C equivalent of about 7.0%. It seems like just a little over a week ago I was at 6.5 which is excellent. So one of my main objectives now is to get that glucose reading lower. Stay tuned. I am blessed with above average medical insurance and that has provided me with a Libre 3 continuous glucose monitor which makes these glucose readings possible. Anyway... Stay tuned.

Behold, I say unto you, I cannot say the smallest part which I feel.

Book of Mormon Review Reading: The Book of Alma the Son of Alma

The account of Alma, who was the son of Alma, the first and chief judge over the people of Nephi, and also the high priest over the Church. An account of the reign of the judges, and the wars and contentions among the people. And also an account of a war between the Nephites and the Lamanites, according to the record of Alma, the first and chief judge.

Alma 1

Nehor teaches false doctrines, establishes a church, introduces priestcraft, and slays Gideon—Nehor is executed for his crimes—Priestcrafts and persecutions spread among the people—The priests support themselves, the people care for the poor, and the Church prospers. About 91–88 B.C.

And so the reign of The Judges chosen by the people begins... But what happens when the people make wrong choices?

Mosiah 29:27 And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land.

Journal Entry

I didn't get any nap time in yesterday. A little bit of a walk then Cathy took the girls to lunch and shopping. I did some basement exercising but by 7:00 p.m. I was too tired to stay up any longer and went to bed. I woke up just before 2 a.m.after a little over 6 hours sleep and went to the Lazy Boy. Not much pain. I had some right hip pain when I got up but it's pretty much gone now. Not taking Tramadol any longer so I am convinced that my recovery is on its way.

Come Follow Me

Alma 26:22 Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing—unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God; yea, unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed; yea, and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance.

Today's lesson has to do with why we have to put forth effort in order grow closer to Heavenly Father. It's clearly not because he wants to just put obstacles in our way or make us jump through hoops, so to speak, for no reason. It's that He is so far ahead of us in every productive way and He knows we need to do the work and expend the effort to get closer to Him. He will guide our steps when He sees our effort but it's needed for us to do our part

"In the scriptures, the Lord has specified how we learn by faith. We must be humble, cultivate faith, repent of our sins, serve our fellowmen, and keep the commandments of God...

I have seen some persons attempt to understand or undertake to criticize the gospel or the Church by the method of reason alone, unaccompanied by the use or recognition of revelation. When reason is adopted as the only—or even the principal—method of judging the gospel, the outcome is predetermined. One cannot find God or understand his doctrines and ordinances by closing the door on the means He has prescribed for receiving the truths of his gospel."

16 Now I say unto you, that because all men are not just it is not expedient that ye should have a king or kings to rule over you. 17 For behold, how much iniquity doth one wicked king cause to be committed, yea, and what great destruction!

18 Yea, remember king Noah, his wickedness and his abominations, and also the wickedness and abominations of his people. Behold what great destruction did come upon them; and also because of their iniquities they were brought into bondage.

And so the reign of The Judges chosen by the people begins...

27 And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land.

Journal Entry

I awoke this morning with almost no pain after sleeping over 6 hours. This could be a giant step toward recovery for me. In a telephonic conversation with Flor at Dr. Kimball's office I was reassured that the steroid I started just yesterday could have been a significant factor in my recovery and that Dr. Kimball has reviewed my MRI and found nothing significant or disturbing. So hopefully I'm on my way to getting well.... Finally!

Cathy is taking Erica and her cousin, Winnie,  to lunch at the Trellis Cafe at Thanksgiving Point. She is so good for those two young women and they are good for her. Hope they have a great time.

I'm enjoying being home since the outside temperature should exceed 100 degrees today.

We walked at the park early today and I will exercise more in the basement later.

Come Follow Me

Alma 26: 11 But Ammon said unto him: I do not boast in my own strength, nor in my own wisdom; but behold, my joy is full, yea, my heart is brim with joy, and I will rejoice in my God.

12 Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.

"We can make each item on our to-do list become a way to glorify Him. We can see each task as a privilege and opportunity to serve Him, even when we are in the midst of deadlines, duties, or dirty diapers.

As Ammon said, “Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things.”

When serving our God becomes our main priority in life, we lose ourselves, and in due course, we find ourselves."

Mosiah 28:1 Now it came to pass that after the sons of Mosiah had done all these things, they took a small number with them and returned to their father, the king, and desired of him that he would grant unto them that they might, with these whom they had selected, go up to the land of Nephi that they might preach the things which they had heard, and that they might impart the word of God to their brethren, the Lamanites— They went through proper and approved channels for permission. Even their father, King Mosiah, inquired of the Lord and received guidance from Him.

Journal Entry

Yesterday was busy. We started at Dr. Kimball's office where my staples were removed from my surgical incision. Everything looked good. I'm still not supposed to soak in the bathtub - which I never do and I'm not to go into swimming pool or hot tub - which I would like to do but I have no problem with holding of on that for now.

They sent in approval for Xrays and a new MRI. Then we walked for awhile at Provo Town Center Mall.

Cathy worked diligently to get me scheduled for my new MRI and Xrays which I ended up getting at 3:30 p.m. at Utah Valley hospital. It may not seem like much but there was a lot of running around and phone calls to make it happen.

Today there is nothing on our schedule except the Bishops Storehouse. I'm going to try to convince Cathy that she should go to that.

My pain level was a little better this morning but I'm hard pressed to know why I can go to bed while mostly pain - free and then have so much pain by 2 a.m. that I can't stay asleep or in bed.

Come Follow Me

Alma 25:15 Yea, and they did keep the law of Moses; for it was expedient that they should keep the law of Moses as yet, for it was not all fulfilled. But notwithstanding the law of Moses, they did look forward to the coming of Christ, considering that the law of Moses was a type of his coming, and believing that they must keep those outward performances until the time that he should be revealed unto them.

16 Now they did not suppose that salvation came by the law of Moses; but the law of Moses did serve to strengthen their faith in Christ; and thus they did retain a hope through faith, unto eternal salvation, relying upon the spirit of prophecy, which spake of those things to come.

"The law of Moses…with symbolism pointing believers to “look forward to the coming” and Atonement of Jesus Christ, was meant to help the people of Israel focus on the Savior by practicing faith in Him, His sacrifice, and His laws and commandments in their lives—it was intended to bring them to a greater understanding of their Redeemer.

Just as we are today, God’s ancient people were invited to see their lives through Him in order to see more of Him in their lives."

I got very little sleep last night because of pain again. The good news is I get to see Dr Kimball this morning and hopefully he'll have some ideas that will be reassuring.

I had a temple recommend interview telephonically yesterday with Bishop Schoonover. That went very well. Hopefully I will be able to meet with a member of the stake presidency either this week or next and that should take care of that.

Come Follow Me

Alma 24:17 And now it came to pass that when the king had made an end of these sayings, and all the people were assembled together, they took their swords, and all the weapons which were used for the shedding of man’s blood, and they did bury them up deep in the earth.

18 And this they did, it being in their view a testimony to God, and also to men, that they never would use weapons again for the shedding of man’s blood; and this they did, vouching and covenanting with God, that rather than shed the blood of their brethren they would give up their own lives; and rather than take away from a brother they would give unto him; and rather than spend their days in idleness they would labor abundantly with their hands.

19 And thus we see that, when these Lamanites were brought to believe and to know the truth, they were firm, and would suffer even unto death rather than commit sin; and thus we see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they buried the weapons of war, for peace. 19 And thus we see that, when these Lamanites were brought to believe and to know the truth, they were firm, and would suffer even unto death rather than commit sin; and thus we see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they buried the weapons of war, for peace.

"The Apostle Paul taught that the Lord’s teachings and teachers were given that we may all attain “the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (Eph. 4:13). This process requires far more than acquiring knowledge. It is not even enough for us to be convinced of the gospel; we must act and think so that we are converted by it. In contrast to the institutions of the world, which teach us to know something, the gospel of Jesus Christ challenges us to become something."

Elder Dallin H. Oaks Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2000

This is an interesting scripture in that I believe it helps us to consider more completely the ramifications of bearing weapons too quickly rather than searching for other ways to accomplish a peaceful solution to whatever problem or threat is in front of us. Violence seldom accomplishes any real long term solution to a threat, even a life endangering threat. However in the heat of the moment, the use of arms may not be avoidable in order to protect loved ones or ourselves. But we should, at least, try to avoid a violent, dangerous solution when an alternative might be available that will solve the problem and perhaps win the hearts and minds of dangerous fires.

"…[T]he Anti-Nephi-Lehies…promised to follow God’s teachings and never go back on their commitment…

Being “converted unto the Lord” means leaving one course of action, directed by an old belief system, and adopting a new one based on faith in Heavenly Father’s plan and in Jesus Christ and His Atonement. This change is more than an intellectual acceptance of gospel teachings. It shapes our identity, transforms our understanding of life’s meaning, and leads to unchanging fidelity to God. Personal desires that are contrary to being anchored to the Savior and to following the covenant path fade away and are replaced by a determination to submit to the will of Heavenly Father.

Being converted unto the Lord starts with an unwavering commitment to God, followed by making that commitment part of who we are. Internalizing such a commitment is a lifelong process that requires patience and ongoing repentance. Eventually, this commitment becomes part of who we are, embedded in our sense of self, and ever present in our lives. Just as we never forget our own name no matter what else we are thinking about, we never forget a commitment that is etched in our hearts."

It's Sunday morning and my pain awakened me again at about 11:00 PM last night and I have not slept since then.it's now 0500 and I hope to get a little nap in before breakfast.
Yesterday, Jake came over and helped us again with the sprinkler system.
I got a little walking in.
Today I've arranged to have my first temple recommend interview on Face Time after church. Then I've been told that a member of the stake presidency will be willing to conduct their interview with me also on Face Time.

Come Follow Me

Alma 22: 17 And it came to pass that when Aaron had said these words, the king did bow down before the Lord, upon his knees; yea, even he did prostrate himself upon the earth, and cried mightily, saying:
18 O God, Aaron hath told me that there is a God; and if there is a God, and if thou art God, wilt thou make thyself known unto me, and I will give away all my sins to know thee, and that I may be raised from the dead, and be saved at the last day. And now when the king had said these words, he was struck as if he were dead.

"When you and I also enter that path, we have a new way of life. We thereby create a relationship with God that allows Him to bless and change us. The covenant path leads us back to Him. If we let God prevail in our lives, that covenant will lead us closer and closer to Him. All covenants are intended to be binding. They create a relationship with everlasting ties.

Once we make a covenant with God, we leave neutral ground forever. God will not abandon His relationship with those who have forged such a bond with Him. In fact, all those who have made a covenant with God have access to a special kind of love and mercy. In the Hebrew language, that covenantal love is called hese's."

Another day of recovery. Still in pain but I slept a little better last night. We have nothing planned for today. Yesterday Cathy drove us to Whole Foods in Cottonwood Heights by way of Heber and Park City. Basically just to kill time. It was a beautiful day and we walked at our local park also.

Come Follow Me

Alma 22:15 And it came to pass that after Aaron had expounded these things unto him, the king said: What shall I do that I may have this eternal life of which thou hast spoken? Yea, what shall I do that I may be born of God, having this wicked spirit rooted out of my breast, and receive his Spirit, that I may be filled with joy, that I may not be cast off at the last day? Behold, said he, I will give up all that I possess, yea, I will forsake my kingdom, that I may receive this great joy.

"So it is that real, personal sacrifice never was placing an animal on the altar. Instead, it is a willingness to put the animal in us upon the altar and letting it be consumed! Such is the “sacrifice unto the Lord … of a broken heart and a contrite spirit,” (D&C 59:8), a prerequisite to taking up the cross, while giving “away all [our] sins” in order to “know God” (Alma 22:18) for the denial of self precedes the full acceptance of Him. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen."

Alma 19:36 And thus the work of the Lord did commence among the Lamanites; thus the Lord did begin to pour out his Spirit upon them; and we see that his arm is extended to all people who will repent and believe on his name.

"It is one of the most powerful paradoxes of the Crucifixion that the arms of the Savior were stretched wide open and then nailed there, unwittingly but accurately portraying that every man, woman, and child in the entire human family is not only welcome but invited into His redeeming, exalting embrace."

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2022

"He pronounced: “Yea, verily … , if ye will come unto me ye shall have eternal life. Behold, mine arm of mercy is extended towards you, and whosoever will come, him will I receive.” His promise invites us not only to reach towards Him but also to take the all-important next step: to come unto Him.

This is such a motivating, cheering doctrine. The Messiah extends His arm of mercy to us, always eager to receive us—if we choose to come to Him. When we do come to the Savior with “full purpose of heart,” we will feel His loving touch in the most personal ways."

Still in pain. I got my new prescription to Tramadol but it's not very effective. I slept a little better last night but I could use more sleep.

I'm really looking forward to resuming my service in the temple and the Bishops Storehouse. Don't know when that will be but....

Come Follow Me

Alma 19:28 And thus the contention began to be exceedingly sharp among them. And while they were thus contending, the woman servant who had caused the multitude to be gathered together came, and when she saw the contention which was among the multitude she was exceedingly sorrowful, even unto tears.

29 And it came to pass that she went and took the queen by the hand, that perhaps she might raise her from the ground; and as soon as she touched her hand she arose and stood upon her feet, and cried with a loud voice, saying: O blessed Jesus, who has saved me from an awful hell! O blessed God, have mercy on this people!

"In the Book of Mormon, Abish was converted by her father’s sharing with her his remarkable vision. For many years thereafter, she kept her testimony in her heart and lived righteously in a very wicked society. Then the time came when she could no longer be still, and she ran from house to house to share her testimony and the miracles she had witnessed in the king’s court. The power of Abish’s conversion and testimony was instrumental in changing an entire society. The people who heard her testify became a people who “were converted unto the Lord, [and] never did fall away,” and their sons became the stripling warriors!"

"My dear brothers and sisters, here is my promise. Nothing will help you more to hold fast to the iron rod than worshipping in the temple as regularly as your circumstances permit. Nothing will protect you more as you encounter the world’s mists of darkness. Nothing will bolster your testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Atonement or help you understand God’s magnificent plan more. Nothing will soothe your spirit more during times of pain. Nothing will open the heavens more. Nothing!

The temple is the gateway to the greatest blessings God has in store for each of us, for the temple is the only place on earth where we may receive all of the blessings promised to Abraham. That is why we are doing all within our power, under the direction of the Lord, to make the temple blessings more accessible to members of the Church"

I had more pain last night than I can ever remember having recently and I could only sleep about three hours. Then I made what might be an interesting discovery. My pain which was worse at night, got less as I drank diet coke or Pepsi in the mornings, and got worse as the day went on after stopping those drinks. So I'm going to consume those drinks a little more than in the past and see what happens.

Come Follow Me

Alma 19:6 Now, this was what Ammon desired, for he knew that king Lamoni was under the power of God; he knew that the dark veil of unbelief was being cast away from his mind, and the light which did light up his mind, which was the light of the glory of God, which was a marvelous light of his goodness—yea, this light had infused such joy into his soul, the cloud of darkness having been dispelled, and that the light of everlasting life was lit up in his soul, yea, he knew that this had overcome his natural frame, and he was carried away in God—

"My dear sisters, whatever your calling, whatever your circumstances, we need your impressions, your insights, and your inspiration. We need you to speak up and speak out in ward and stake councils. We need each married sister to speak as “a contributing and full partner” as you unite with your husband in governing your family. Married or single, you sisters possess distinctive capabilities and special intuition you have received as gifts from God. We brethren cannot duplicate your unique influence.

We know that the culminating act of all creation was the creation of woman! We need your strength!"

President Russell M. Nelson, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, October 2015

Alma 17:11

11 And the Lord said unto them also: “Go forth among the Lamanites, thy brethren, and establish my word; yet ye shall be patient in long‐suffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples unto them in me, and I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls.”

I'm still experiencing a lot of pain and I only have enough of my Tramadol pain pills to last through tomorrow. I'm hoping Dr. Kimball will authorize a refill.

Cathy needs to see her ear doctor because one of her ears is plugged. Hopefully that will happen this morning. Then she needs to go to the Bishops Storehouse this afternoon. I will do my basement workout. That's about it for today. The pain and surgical restrictions keeps me pretty well grounded. Getting old. But next Monday I see Dr Kimball again. Hopefully that will signal a change for the better in my recovery process.

Come Follow Me

This is a good topic for me at this time.

Alma 17:11 And the Lord said unto them also: Go forth among the Lamanites, thy brethren, and establish my word; yet ye shall be patient in long-suffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples unto them in me, and I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls.

"Above all else we can live the gospel. Surely there is no more powerful missionary message we can send to this world than the example of a loving and happy Latter-day Saint life. The manner and bearing, the smile and kindness of a faithful member of the Church brings a warmth and an outreach which no missionary tract or videotape can convey. People do not join the Church because of what they know. They join because of what they feel, what they see and want spiritually. Our spirit of testimony and happiness in that regard will come through to others if we let it."

Pain level is described in at least one publication: after looking at pain level measurement chart and decided I have been under estimating my pain level.

  • 5 = Moderately strong pain. You can't ignore it for more than a few minutes. But, with effort, you can still work or do some social activities.
  • 6 = Moderately stronger pain. You avoid some of your normal daily activities. You have trouble concentrating.
My pain level is usually in the 5-6 level. Especially at night when I'm trying to sleep after about 4-5 hours even though I have taken pain medication. Usually after I'm up for awhile and active, my pain goes down for a time. But when I just sit to read or watch TV it starts going up again... Even when taking pain meds.  I am constantly hoping my pain level will go down again.

When I went into surgery, my pain was all on the left side... usually in my left hip or upper left thigh and sometimes down to the left knee. My pain lately has been concentrated in my left knee and thigh. There is no reason for this other than the surgery where the surgeon worked on the nerves in my spine. I am told, and I completely believe, that my pain will subside soon. I'm ten days out of surgery at this point and I was told that my pain could be several weeks. So right on schedule. I am tired of it though.

Unfortunately I reacted badly opioid pain meds in previous surgeries and we agreed to try Tramadol this time. But it seems to work for only about an hour and then not too well. So I am suffering at the 5-6 level of pain rather than 2-3. Hopefully the healing will cause the pain to lift soon and then... no issue.

Come Follow Me

Alma 17:3 But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God.

"Prayer and fasting will allow us to be susceptible to spiritual promptings. Communicating with Heavenly Father while purposefully abstaining from food and drink allows us to “loose the bands of wickedness and to undo the heavy burdens.” Prayer, combined with fasting, will provide so that when we “call, … the Lord shall answer; … and when we cry, … he shall say, Here I am.”

Elder James B. Martino Of the Seventy, October 2015

The phrase, "They had given themselves..." Is an interesting and, I believe, informative choice of words. The sons of Mosiah were not just following some direction or commandment to fast and pray, but we're voluntarily trying to get close to the Spirit by choosing to engage in fasting and prayer without being Commanded or directed to do so. That has to have a positive effect on obtaining the guidance of the Spirit of prophecy and the Spirit of revelation.
